An insider's guide to Stockholm, Sweden - SilverKris

"The main metro hub famed for its striking public art: part of a broader project begun in 1957 that decorates over 90 of the city’s stations with sculptures, paintings and engravings; this station is particularly noted for its large floral and vine motifs and picturesque appearance." - SilverKris

Yelp
We only got lost once at T-Centralen which is pretty good considering how many levels there are here. T-Centralen where "T" is an abreviation for "tunnelbana" that is the Swedish word for underground. Lots of escalators and many lifts. This is the only station where all of the subway lines meet and is therefore the busiest station in the Swedish network with an underground underpass to the Stockholm Central Station (for national and regional trains) where we caught the Arlanda Express to the airport. Both of the blue lines (Lines 10 and 11), both of the red lines (Lines 13 and 14) and all three of the green lines (Lines 17, 18 and 19). Thankfully, there's a great color map that shows what's what and where. Many food and shopping opportunities. Luggage storage areas. Several places to sit and rest. We were through here several times and never had time to properly explore. It was a connecting point and a good one for that. [Review 18722 overall - 56 in Sweden - 2245 of 2022.]

Yelp
We did a tour of Stockholm's art-filled subway stations and this one was probably my favorite of all. Beautiful paintings and character, ideal for a quick photo opp.

Yelp
T-Centralen is built into Stockholm's Central Station with the T standing for tunnelbana, which is the city's metro/subway system. It is in a good location within easy access to connect onto long or short distance train journeys due to it being so close to Central Station There are multiple entrances/exits/lifts in the station so the layout can be a little confusing at first if you're trying to specifically find a certain store or lift, but it is pretty easy to navigate and get around. Like any metro station, I do feel it could do more to show the maps on the platform perhaps in a list similar to London - especially what they're doing with the Jubilee line extension. Some areas do have nice, unique decor while most can be hard to follow. 3* for ease, location and being on all lines which made T-Centralen useful to carry on my journey from Slussen, where I was staying to Solna and beyond. UPDATE: A broken-down lift caused a huge delay to my journey here, causing me to have to go two stations down the line going back on myself (where an unfortunate event saw that lift out of order too), this could have been avoided by planning maintenance ahead which this station failed to do - I later did find out there was another lift on the platform which I was directed to by a member of staff (middle of the platform) however it was hidden and no member of staff or sign was able to direct me - leaving me stranded for a long time on the metro system. - This station is just too confusing to navigate and the lift issue is a damn right fucking disgrace, and the extra star is mainly for the number of services it offers compared to other metro stations and the location - but for such a central, key and important line it could be laid out so much better with staff who actually care to help.

Yelp
It sounds a little weird, but the subway was my favorite part of Stockholm. There were a lot of stations that were painted with gorgeous art. We spent our last afternoon doing a self guided subway art tour. We probably went to 5-7 different stops to look at the art and it was better than art museum in my opinion. Google will provide you with plenty of stops that have art at them. Other than the art, the subway system is pretty extensive and a very easy way to get around the city. We used it as our main mode of transportation mixed a little bit with the tram and buses

Yelp
Rode around the tunnelbana in Stockholm. Beautiful varied stations and extremely helpful staff at the windows by the entrances. Super nice folks! That said - I had more fun in the Paris Metro and jetting around in the Hong Kong and Shanghai metro systems.

Yelp
I have mixed feelings towards the central station in Stockholm. In many ways it is ugly and chaotic but it does also fulfill its intended purpose. It is the hub for much of the public transport in Stockholm with all subway lines and commuter train lines connecting here so thousands of people pass through every day. While it is going through some renovation it is perhaps not always easy to walk around but it is slowly transforming into something better. Good selection of services (grocery stores, bakery, convenience stores, book stores, cafes, restaurants, pharmacy and many other things) still means that most of the things one may need can be found here.

Yelp
Three stars for convenience and the fact that everything (trains, airport shuttle, the metro, bus lines) comes and goes from here. That being said, so does EVERYONE! Expect a crowd, beggars, and in a few places, the smell of bodily fluids. A surprisingly good amount of shops and cafe's! The cities only Starbucks is located here!

Yelp
I've fallen in love with Stockholm, and the T-Bana is one reason why. The T-Bana makes it super easy to get around in Stockholm, and all the staff I've encountered were extremely helpful. The art in the stations gives them a entirely different vibe and makes the sometimes standard, rote commute much less burdensome. This is what a subway system should be. In L.A. we have parking lots, er, I mean freeways.....
