Ta'Carbon in Glendale: A National Joke, Not a National Treasure
How USA Today named this place one of the "restaurants of the year" is beyond comprehension--unless the criteria were "most likely to make you lose faith in humanity." I came in with basic expectations: a simple taco plate for me and a quesadilla for my wife. What I got was a full-blown scam attempt and some of the worst food in Phoenix.
Let's start with the register. The guy rang up my $26 order as $100. When I flagged it, he "graciously" dropped it to $79. It wasn't until I firmly insisted that he finally rang up the correct price. All the while, he pretended not to speak English--until later in our meal when he had a perfectly fluent conversation in English with another customer. Sketchy doesn't even begin to describe it.
And then there's the food--if you can call it that. The tacos were absolutely abysmal: dry, tough meat with the flavor profile of old fryer oil. Even the salsas, which should be the saving grace of a taqueria, tasted like they'd been left out in the sun and forgot what "spice" meant. My wife's quesadilla was greasy, bland, and borderline inedible.
There are hundreds of better taco spots in Phoenix. Ta'Carbon just happens to be the one with a baffling national write-up and none of the quality to back it up. Save your money, your appetite, and your dignity--go literally anywhere else.
