The Ultimate Guide to the World's Food Museums

"Deep in southern Louisiana there is an island made of salt, completely surrounded by bayous. Known as a salt dome, this unusual geological formation is home to the fields that grow a unique red pepper, one that’s turned into the iconic hot sauce of just about every pantry and back-bar in the United States: Tabasco. Since 1868, five generations of one family have been making Tabasco on Avery Island, at the southern end of Louisiana’s New Iberia parish. The McIlhenny Company, owned by descendants of the original family that settled the island, still runs the factory, along with a museum, country store, and restaurant. There are also daily tours of the greenhouse, barrel and blending processes, the island’s salt mine, and the factory’s bottling plant. For most of Tabasco’s existence, the fields that surround the factory grew every pepper that ended up mashed into the vinegar-based sauce. Today, in order to protect against weather and other threats to the crop, the seed peppers are all grown in the unique soil of the salt dome, then exported to international farmers to ensure steady growing seasons. Still, even with peppers from Central and South America, they’ve been producing Tabasco with the same recipe, using the same techniques, for nearly 150 years.   Avery Island is also home to Jungle Gardens, a wildlife and garden preserve originally established by Edward McIlhenny, son of the creator of Tabasco sauce, back in 1895." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

This is such a cute experience. I really enjoyed the museum and the self-guided tour. It wasn't a huge tour, but I enjoyed what I saw and learned. The folks in the store were so nice and there's a tasting bar!! I ate in the restaurant, which was ok, but I felt like I needed to so I could round out the experience. I'll definitely go back when I come back to LA because I'd like to walk the Jungle Gardens next time.

It was a fun experience for the family and I! We enjoyed the Tour as well as the gardens! Definitely a good experience. You get to try the different sauces in the end and have a Jalapeño flavored ice cream which my mind didn’t know how to comprehend it.

Google
The tour itself is self guided with a map to help. Nice gift shop with all things Tabasco. The tour itself not too exciting without a guide to explain things and ask questions of. The grounds surrounding the factory are worth the price of admission. We took an hour to an hour and a half but could have taken considerably more time to take the driving tour. Too much to explain here but the grounds blew me away. Familiarize yourself ahead of time to know the incredible amount of time and money it took to sculpt the area out of a bayou or two on top of a salt dome.

We had a spectacular visit. So interesting to learn the process of making the beloved sauce. The grounds are beautiful. The tour is self-guided but very well marked! The store is very nice and you can sample the different varieties. I would suggest going when it is cooler. Definitely a hot visit.

I had such a nice time exploring. The gift shop is nice and the staff friendly and helpful. I especially enjoyed tasting the "family reserve" Tobasco. It is aged for 8 years before bottling. The restaurant was laid back. The menu consisted of many homemade recipies. The chef talked to us and helped us choose what we might like. The jungle tour was peaceful and relaxing. We downloaded an app which gave us an audio tour of what we were seeing. We spotted 2 alligators and of course birds. The "bamboo trail" was fun. We had a wonderful time.

Google
Extremely glad that we went! The museum itself is very informative. The family is very impressive! The tour is really really cool, especially seeing the plants and bottling. We thoroughly enjoyed everything. The gift shop though... incredible! It was awesome being able to try all of the different types. They had Tabasco ice cream, soda, queso, etc. Definitely didn't leave without a bunch of sauces and souvenirs. I would definitely go back.

Google
Wow!! Very thorough and thoughtfully created museum and tour, and quite reasonably priced. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to read or enjoy the majority of it, as I was chasing two small kids, but I still enjoyed what I saw. There are several exhibits both indoors and outdoors, plus an optional, quick walking path through a bamboo forest. Very cool spot to check out, even if you’re not a big Tabasco sauce fan. Super cool gift shop with a little something for everyone, and a DELICIOUS restaurant next door called 1868.

Google
Lots of information to read about and the self guided walking tour was good. I went early Sunday morning, so it was very quiet and no bottling was happening. Still, I enjoyed a slow walk and spent about 90 minutes taking it all in. I'd say it's well worth a visit.

Yelp
If you love Tabasco... or even if you don't... you'll love the Tabasco self-guided tour. Tabasco has been in operation since after the Civil War. It has a long history with generations of families living and working on Avery Island. There is plenty to keep the family entertained for a few hours. The museum is small and gives a glimpse into the history of Tabasco. I certainly have a greater appreciation for the product after the tour. Avery Island is far from New Orleans so access is best by car. There are no ride sharing options available. Hours are 9am-4 pm. It's $15.50 for adults and 12.50 for children (free for 4 and under). Cash isn't accepted. Access to the factory also gives you access to nearby gardens. Great way to spend an afternoon. Highly recommend.
