The Ultimate Guide to the World's Food Museums

"Deep in southern Louisiana there is an island made of salt, completely surrounded by bayous. Known as a salt dome, this unusual geological formation is home to the fields that grow a unique red pepper, one that’s turned into the iconic hot sauce of just about every pantry and back-bar in the United States: Tabasco. Since 1868, five generations of one family have been making Tabasco on Avery Island, at the southern end of Louisiana’s New Iberia parish. The McIlhenny Company, owned by descendants of the original family that settled the island, still runs the factory, along with a museum, country store, and restaurant. There are also daily tours of the greenhouse, barrel and blending processes, the island’s salt mine, and the factory’s bottling plant. For most of Tabasco’s existence, the fields that surround the factory grew every pepper that ended up mashed into the vinegar-based sauce. Today, in order to protect against weather and other threats to the crop, the seed peppers are all grown in the unique soil of the salt dome, then exported to international farmers to ensure steady growing seasons. Still, even with peppers from Central and South America, they’ve been producing Tabasco with the same recipe, using the same techniques, for nearly 150 years.   Avery Island is also home to Jungle Gardens, a wildlife and garden preserve originally established by Edward McIlhenny, son of the creator of Tabasco sauce, back in 1895." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

We had a spectacular visit. So interesting to learn the process of making the beloved sauce. The grounds are beautiful. The tour is self-guided but very well marked! The store is very nice and you can sample the different varieties. I would suggest going when it is cooler. Definitely a hot visit.

Extremely glad that we went! The museum itself is very informative. The family is very impressive! The tour is really really cool, especially seeing the plants and bottling. We thoroughly enjoyed everything. The gift shop though... incredible! It was awesome being able to try all of the different types. They had Tabasco ice cream, soda, queso, etc. Definitely didn't leave without a bunch of sauces and souvenirs. I would definitely go back.

Lots of information to read about and the self guided walking tour was good. I went early Sunday morning, so it was very quiet and no bottling was happening. Still, I enjoyed a slow walk and spent about 90 minutes taking it all in. I'd say it's well worth a visit.

Unexpected delight! Jungle gardens are an amazing drive/walk experience. Loved being able to tour at our own pace as well. We had budgeted about an hour and a half but forced ourselves to leave after about 3 hours. Will definitely return, perhaps in the fall. Lady’s at the gift shop treat you like family. Make sure to try the Ice Cream!! Who’d a thunk it!😂

Great, informative, self guided tour. Indoor exhibits & outdoor walkways. It's best to go when the factory is operating so you can see the production line moving. Stop by the gift shop for free samples of all the flavors & their Tabasco ice cream. It's surprisingly good...if you like ice cream. The on-site restaurant closes early. Don't wait too long to eat, you might miss out.

There's a sign as you walk up to the buildings on the left that says to start at the museum. You pay and then follow the well marked numbers through the self-paced tour. The food at the restaurant was delicious. We discovered we like the new Sweet Chili and the Reserve. The shop was fun, and sister tried the raspberry Tabasco ice cream. It was interesting. The gardens were gorgeous. Just stay to the right, and don't turn around just because it says "Boat House and RV's". Keep going. We also enjoyed watching the birds and alligators in the rookery. Thanks for preserving and sharing this treasure. Now I want bamboo.

If you love Tabasco this is a must stop before you go to New Orleans the history was so cool, 7 stops on the self guided tour summer is hot so walk fast but in the buildings it's nice and cool you get to see the way the barrels are prepared to mashing and aging bottling and free tasting with your $15 ticket restaurant is good to recommend the sampler to share so many good things the red beans and rice and ice cream all flavored with Tabasco but not to hot! Parking is close also many things you can get here to take home in the gift shop after do the drive thru of the grove and the family mansion we really enjoyed views of the river the trees and plants are beautiful and it's included with your $15 ticket workers were very friendly

Yelp
If you love Tabasco... or even if you don't... you'll love the Tabasco self-guided tour. Tabasco has been in operation since after the Civil War. It has a long history with generations of families living and working on Avery Island. There is plenty to keep the family entertained for a few hours. The museum is small and gives a glimpse into the history of Tabasco. I certainly have a greater appreciation for the product after the tour. Avery Island is far from New Orleans so access is best by car. There are no ride sharing options available. Hours are 9am-4 pm. It's $15.50 for adults and 12.50 for children (free for 4 and under). Cash isn't accepted. Access to the factory also gives you access to nearby gardens. Great way to spend an afternoon. Highly recommend.
