"A factory in Louisiana known for its production of Tabasco sauce."

"Deep in southern Louisiana there is an island made of salt, completely surrounded by bayous. Known as a salt dome, this unusual geological formation is home to the fields that grow a unique red pepper, one that’s turned into the iconic hot sauce of just about every pantry and back-bar in the United States: Tabasco. Since 1868, five generations of one family have been making Tabasco on Avery Island, at the southern end of Louisiana’s New Iberia parish. The McIlhenny Company, owned by descendants of the original family that settled the island, still runs the factory, along with a museum, country store, and restaurant. There are also daily tours of the greenhouse, barrel and blending processes, the island’s salt mine, and the factory’s bottling plant. For most of Tabasco’s existence, the fields that surround the factory grew every pepper that ended up mashed into the vinegar-based sauce. Today, in order to protect against weather and other threats to the crop, the seed peppers are all grown in the unique soil of the salt dome, then exported to international farmers to ensure steady growing seasons. Still, even with peppers from Central and South America, they’ve been producing Tabasco with the same recipe, using the same techniques, for nearly 150 years.   Avery Island is also home to Jungle Gardens, a wildlife and garden preserve originally established by Edward McIlhenny, son of the creator of Tabasco sauce, back in 1895." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

There's a sign as you walk up to the buildings on the left that says to start at the museum. You pay and then follow the well marked numbers through the self-paced tour. The food at the restaurant was delicious. We discovered we like the new Sweet Chili and the Reserve. The shop was fun, and sister tried the raspberry Tabasco ice cream. It was interesting. The gardens were gorgeous. Just stay to the right, and don't turn around just because it says "Boat House and RV's". Keep going. We also enjoyed watching the birds and alligators in the rookery. Thanks for preserving and sharing this treasure. Now I want bamboo.

If you love Tabasco this is a must stop before you go to New Orleans the history was so cool, 7 stops on the self guided tour summer is hot so walk fast but in the buildings it's nice and cool you get to see the way the barrels are prepared to mashing and aging bottling and free tasting with your $15 ticket restaurant is good to recommend the sampler to share so many good things the red beans and rice and ice cream all flavored with Tabasco but not to hot! Parking is close also many things you can get here to take home in the gift shop after do the drive thru of the grove and the family mansion we really enjoyed views of the river the trees and plants are beautiful and it's included with your $15 ticket workers were very friendly

Wonderful Wonderful place..Tabasco factory is fantastic, you get to see the entire process of manufacturing different types of the sauce. They let you sample ice cream (very different), all types of sauce and different snacks. The place brings in the wonderful history of a family owned business. On the top of it the place has some of the best natural habitats, where you can enjoy alligators, tortoises and birds. The place is a must visit.

We had a really good time here. The museum told you all about the history of the family and how Tabasco came to be. It was very interesting. You got to see the stages of production and see the folks actually on the production floor. It was a good tour and the videos weren't too long and were engaging. We also went to the jungle gardens and that was beautiful. It does look like they have a lot to upkeep, but I wish the water features still worked. I was also sad to see that the house isn't open to the public and looks quite run down. But overall it was a beautiful place! You kind of drive through and stop and walk different parts.

We spent almost the whole day on Avery Island visiting the Tabasco factory (self guided tour) the gift shops and the gardens and had a blast. The beauty of the oak trees on the area of the gardens is like heaven on earth. We ate at the Cafe on property and had probably the best meal of our entire trip there. I had the crawfish ettoufee with crab cake and the boudin egg rolls. I would definitely order this again. Lots of unique gifts in the shops. Tabasco pepper chocolate perhaps my favorite.

Great tour, easy to do. You spend a fair amount of time walking outside to get from one section to another, so be prepared for wet/HOT weather conditions. Museum is informative and well done. Gift shop has usable home items, apparel and lots of stuff for kids. Worth the trip to the middle of nowhere.

Legendary. Excellent self guided tour. The attention to 3 ingredients is amazing. So are the Jungle Gardens on Avery Island. It was raining so we drove and hiked as the weather allowed. This place is so pretty and we were right there just before everything bloomed. Beware of the gators, admire the birds and even a Buddha garden. Allow 1 hour for the Tobasco tour. 30 minutes for the gift shop where you may sample everything they make, including Tobasco flavored ice cream 🍦! We hiked/drove around the jungle Island for close to 3 hours. Lots of photos. If you haven't met the swamp and a beautiful LA Island with a salt mine underneath, this might be that place. Worth driving further south! Since the early 1800s. Boom. JR

This was very interesting. We enjoyed the gift shop and the virtual tour in the app. The jungle garden was beautiful. We arrived at 2:00 and didn’t finish until 5:00pm. We were too late for the restaurant
