15 Best Tapas Bars in Madrid | Condé Nast Traveler

"Antonio Sánchez, the oldest taberna in Madrid (est. 1787), is essentially a living museum. Azulejos peek out between cobwebby wine bottles, and the bar is stacked with olives, jamón canapés, and hacked-up chorizo. On the walls, portraits of bullfighters and sepia-tone newspaper clippings." - Benjamin Kemper

Tapas Crawling With Madrid’s 'Taberna King' | Condé Nast Traveler

"Under a taxidermied bull head in Antonio Sánchez, the oldest tavern in Madrid (est. 1787), Osorio wonders aloud whether—as local legend has it—patrons really flocked here after the Peninsular War to drink wine flavored with the flesh of a decaying French soldier killed by local gangs. 'It wouldn’t be the first time somebody hid a cadaver in a jug of wine,' he says with a wink. Ah, if only these chipped, tobacco-stained walls could talk. Azulejos (traditional ceramic tiles) peek out between cobwebbed wine bottles that teeter precariously on bowed wooden shelves. A carved-wood bar brims with bowls of olives and thick-sliced salchichón, a peppery Castilian salami. On the walls, portraits of bullfighters, painted by a long-forgotten artist, share precious real estate with sepia-tone newspaper clippings; a replica of an Ignacio Zuloaga sketch immortalizing the bullfighter Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, whom Lorca eulogized in one of his best-known poems; and wood panels bearing calligraphed menu items ('Specialties: Tripe, Dogfish, Squid, Doughnuts, Omelets, Fried Bread')."

Very cozy place and perfect local food - the style like tavernas but dishes looks and taste like in restaurants. Be careful with offering you a bread-one slice will cost you 3 eur (the waiter didin’t inform about it).

I loved the ambiance of this restaurant - and the food was very tasty. Courteous and professional service, almost too quick! The apple tart for dessert was amazing - the best I've had in years. Warmly recommended.

Google
Historical ancient restaurant in Madrid. Finally I found a place where to eat something traditional but not so well known, as the artichoke, or the cocido de Madrid, a stew with chickpeas, various meat cuts, and vegetables. The wine choice is very good. They also have the Coravin system so you can taste expensive bottles without taking the whole bottle. Strongly recommend the reservation, can be done via Google Maps, too.

I went at the right time, 7:30 (1930hrs) 10 minutes after I sat down they were turning people away! The waitress was very attuned to customers wants & needs, keeping an eye on people even when it got very busy. I started with a negroni drink which was excellent. The menu is varied and has some superb oddities (for my taste) such as pigs ear; I didn't dare but instead had the pork belly. It came without crackling but it was juicy, tender and came with an interesting and flavourful sauce. With this I had a glass of house red, very drinkable. I followed my meal with a to-die-for espresso. Excellent, thanks. Ok so I went back on Tuesday the 13th. Not the same experience. After ordering the Sopa de cocido madrileno (the English version was "a traditional Madrid style stew soup", I was shocked. The wording kind of suggested there would be vegetables present..ahh stew. No! To me it tasted like watered down gravy with pasta added (probably as an afterthought because hey pasta is cheap right)...I am Australian and obviously didn't understand this concept of 'stew'. Anyhoo all good, I didn't eat it and they didn't charge me for it..the way it should be and guys just as a matters of interest you were not doing me a favour by not charging me. Thanks especially to the young chap who probably said something to the effect of "she has no clue and we really shouldn't charge her for not understanding our cuisine". Well done 😉

Google
This place is totally not trash. I knew we were in for a delicious meal when the bread came out and it was as hard as a rock; not only did it crumble in your mouth, but it was spilling all over the table. That's how you know it was good. The Madrid soup was delicious and wasn't Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup . Next up was a delicious starter that I didn't order. I'm so grateful that the waiter added his personal touch to my experience and charged me for it. Luckily, the meat was so bland that it didn't awaken or upset my palate, and it was delicious! I'm so disappointed that I won't be able to eat at this restaurant again; I would love to go back with friends that I don't like and won't ever talk to me again after this meal. It's a must-try in Madrid. It would be a true tragedy to miss out on this hidden gem. Clarification: Bread costs 3 euros per person, but it's unlimited! It really adds a unique touch to the experience, because it's free everywhere else, but it's totally worth it because you won't find bread that stale unless you leave it out for a week. Thank you for such an amazing and unforgettable meal.

Google
The place is very nicely decorated, there is a real traditional atmosphere. We also enjoyed the wine! However, the food was not worth the money because it seemed very basic and plus, they charge you for bread without mentioning it! IMO, you can find a better place.

Google
As a historical icon being the oldest tavern in Spain, I feel fortunate to have been able to grab a vermouth here while visiting Madrid. They were very welcoming and the vermut was tasty.

Yelp
Every item we had was very good. We were expecting a good steak, we ordered beef & a seafood dish, the steak was outstanding; one of the best I've had in a very long time. That said, our calamari was very good as well. The staff was very helpful & kind, as we don't speak Spanish unfortunately. The atmosphere obviously is legit old world Madrid. We really enjoyed our experience.

Yelp
Average at best. The only reason to go is to say you have had a drink at the oldest bar in Madrid. Service and food were average at best.

Yelp
I really love this place. I've been here twice, the first time casually passing it around lunch time. Surprisingly, it hadn't been crowded. We are frequently in Madrid and have made it a mission to find all the good places to eat. This one is a keeper. The food is delicious, service was good and the atmosphere is authentic. I've had the croquettes, octopus, callos, artichokes with quail eggs, not to mention the desserts which are great. Give it a try if you really want a taste of authentic SOS ish good.

Yelp
We learned about this place by watching James Blick of Devour Tours on you tube. He and his wife are entertaining in their descriptions and suggestions in Spain. He highly recommended this place. We made a point of getting a reservation. We were very pleased with the whole experience. The old tavern style restaurant is still nice and comfortable inside. The staff were all very attentive. The food was outstanding. The oxtail was the big hit. ( as James Suggested). Our other entrees were all expertly prepared and presented. We had a wonderful family event. What a highlight of our Madrid visit.

Yelp
Definitely worth a visit when in Madrid. The food and service are excellent. This is the oldest Tavern in Madrid. I would be back for sure.

Yelp
Never have I experienced a more rude approach ! We came for dinner and was seated. Menus were delivered in Spanish which is fair enough. We asked if they had a translated menu. Nope. The waiter spoke perfect English and wasn't busy at all. He wouldn't bother translating the menu items for us. We ended up just paying for the two glasses of wine and had to leave because we were completely ignored. Unless you read Spanish: Don't go there. Rude and ignorant staff completely ignoring you if you dare to enter the place not speaking Spanish.

Yelp
Excellent food and service, well worth the visit to the oldest Tavern/ restaurant in Madrid. Enjoyed all 3 dishes and the desert.

Yelp
This restaurant helps retain a little of I classify as "classic Spain". It's dark wooden interior absorbs a lot of light, just like a tavern's ought to. Its bar is a couple hundred years old, its register is an old yellow metal...a bull's head hangs on the wall, and the place was in fact founded by an ex-bullfighter (or so it says on an old plaque inside). We've tried some of the meats and of course the potatoes are some of the best we've had in Madrid. The wait staff is friendly (we speak Spanish) and the prices fall in the lower-middle range if you eat Spanish-style: ordering a few plates and sharing them while sipping drinks.
