Chad Moore’s ‘Grub Street Diet’

"A weekend-focused spot (open Thursday through Saturday) popular with the writer and friends for casual tapas-style dishes; recent orders included kale soup with vegan chorizo, a mushroom-and-huitlacoche quesadilla, and popcorn cauliflower, paired with Portuguese Super Bock beers." - Chris Crowley

I came as a party of one (solo) and was treated so kindly, seated immediately, not rushed. The waiters are so charming and make you feel welcomed. I had a salad from their specials menu and their mix fried seafood. I also ordered a mocktail (delicious and a good variety of them!) and had a blast. The space is a bit tight but that’s part of the charm in my opinion.

A fantastic tapas bar in Portugal! It’s always very busy, but absolutely worth it. The octopus and fried seafood are unbelievably good — some of the best I’ve ever had. The lively atmosphere makes you feel like you’re right in the heart of Portuguese life. A must-visit spot for anyone who loves great food and authentic local vibes!

Google
Great place, found it thanks to the great reviews. Decided to walk here instead of eating on the long stretch of touristy restaurants. Totally worth the hype. The food was amazing, everything was fresh and I could tell they were made with love. Very nice staff, when the lemonade was too sour the bartender fixed it and filled it to the top. He was understanding and although busy, took the time to help us. The burrata was very tasty, as well as the carbonara. The food was awesome! I’d definitely come back!

We arrived at around 15:50 when kitchen was about to close and all tables were taken and they looked quite busy. The waitress Dani found us a table and put the order in for the food just in time and was extremely nice to us, spoke perfect english and always had a smile on her face. Food came and it was amazing. We had negronis and even those were really well balanced. The staff really turned the situation around since we really were not convinced whether we should wait for a table or find somewhere else but Dani really worked well to accommodate us the best way she could. Overall a very good experience, highly recommended if you want quick and pleasant service, nice food and drinks.

Google
4,7/5 At first, Taberna can feel crowded and noisy, less because of its popularity than the compact size of the room. But soon enough, that energy settles into something warmer: the hum of a place that feels both familial and lived-in. Service is attentive and efficient, marked by a genuine friendliness that sets the tone for the meal. Plates are modest in size but substantial, each one carefully seasoned, cooked with precision, and balanced in flavor. They satisfy without excess, leaving the palate content. Taken together, the experience feels cohesive, as if everything has been tuned to the same rhythm. A place worth entering, worth tasting, and, above all, worth returning to.

We found this place, and let me just say—it was a great find! It was pretty busy when we arrived, and since the outdoor seating was full, we sat upstairs, which worked out just fine. The first server kindly offered us drinks while we waited, and then Arnold took over as our server for the night. He was so patient with us as we couldn’t decide what to order. We had the caresses di burrata, which was so good—the peaches added a really nice touch. The octopus with roasted potatoes was tasty, though a bit salty. My husband had the croquette, which was delicious, and for dessert, the raspberry brownie was absolutely to die for.

Google
Fantastic. Service is a little slow when it’s busy, and the kids option is pasta only. But these are two, minor notes. The food is fantastic- varied, fairly priced, well portioned and full of flavour. The octopus was absolutely stellar, as was the tortellini ragu and the braised beef cheeks. Drinks were similarly quality. The staff spoke excellent English. A really easy, wonderful slow lunch.

Google
The bruschetta was AMAZING. I’m still dreaming about the fresh tomato’s and creamy burrata 4 days later. Must try. Perfect seasoned food. Octopus was tender, and the potato’s gratin on pork cheeks were delicious. Must try in Cascais.

Yelp
The food was amazing, my friends and I shared several items and everything was great. The Pesto with burrata is what I got and finished in one sitting and barely wanted to share. Prices are incredibly reasonable for what you get! Even if you are stuck in the line as it's busy, you can order drinks or snacks at their bar window. What really made this a 5 Star review was Chris on the wait staff. Even walking past I saw her hugging several customers and we had the same experience. She has a great sense of humor and makes you feel at home, she told my niece to come back asap! Such a great last meal in Cascais! If you see a line here trust me it's worth the wait!!!

Yelp
Excellent spot off the main drag. Would highly recommend stopping here. The staff was friendly and speedy, and the food was delicious. We started with the Clandestina (Tomato, Burrata, Basil & Pesto) - superb. Our entrees were: Tortellini with Chianti Meat sauce & Burrata and the Prego hot focaccia. Both were rich in taste and excellent.

Yelp
Cute, busy restaurant in Cascais which played nice music. Ordered the tortellini bolognese with burrata cheese. I would say a 4/5 for me. I feel like it was missing a bit of flavor but still a great meal. Also ordered croquettes (ham and cheese/ blue cheese). I recommend the ham and cheese more. It was creamy and flavorful. My cousin ordered the octupus with migas (I did not try) and we also got clandestina bruschetta which I saw from reading one of the reviews here. The clandestina was tasty as well and would give it a 4/5. Service was quick and efficient!

Yelp
Very good food spot if you find yourself walking in Cascais. The seafood platter was delicious and the octopus was sooooo good, very tender and perfectly charred. Also ordered some fresh fruit on the side and it was the freshest fruit I've ever had, no lie. It's also part of a tavern right across, very nice if you want to drink after eating such tasty food.

Yelp
The place was quite small and the wait was about 30 mins but we did go to a different bar in the meantime to wait. But it was worth the wait. We received a table outside and it was beautiful. The sangria was delicious as well as the appetizers. But the main delight of the night was the pasta. You could tell it was made fresh. The server was super nice and helpful with the menu and the restaurant was super busy but made up for it with the ambiance. Definitely would recommend to others!

Yelp
Took a day trip to Cascais and was looking around for a place to eat when I stumbled upon this place. Somewhat hidden from the main avenue and located along with one the side pedestrian only streets. They have a variety of tapas style dishes as well as pasta, focaccia. I opted for the mixed fried seafood and the octopus. Both were amazing. Fresh , delicious and pretty good portion size. I initially say outside with heat lamps but moved indoor as it was getting chilly. Nice chill ambience and staff were all very friendly, helpful, and spoke English. English menus were also available if needed. They poured a shot of complimentary port when brining the check. Would definitely come again!

Yelp
Sunday lunch in this Italian-influenced casual bohemian restaurant which operates like a well-oiled machine On both sides of a narrow street rising up from the waterfront, with tables outside on both sides of a narrow pedestrian walkway The owners have a real sense of humor; I have never seen "Take Your Seats" on a ladies' washroom door, nor "Standing Room Only" for the men's room...the shared hand basin area had the inscription "Organic garden fueled by natural gas".....Priceless ! To start: Beet hummus with crudities and the bread basket with herbed butter and tapenade Mains: Incredible beet salad and Braised black pork with duchesse potatoes I really bandied a glass of red wine and cheese after the main course but there was none on the menu, so I asked the waitress if she could get a plate of local cheese - of course came the reply...and it was exquisite She even offered me samples of 2 different red wines...service above and beyond with a smile and genuine pride in delivering an amazing guest experience By far and away my best meal on the Iberian Peninsula EVER

Yelp
This was the best meal I have had In Portugal. It was flavorful, the meat was tender and just all around delicious. I wanted to order a second to go but instead ordered the tiramisu for dessert and it did not disappoint- it may be the best I have ever had. Highly recommend and worth the train ride from Lisbon.

Yelp
This place is amazing! All the staff were so kind and helpful. They are also very efficient. The ambiance was so lovely. They offer a patio as well as two indoor buildings for seating. I opted to sit outside and waited about 8-10 minutes. As for the food, it was good! They had a variety of dishes that were very reasonably priced. I went with one of the specials that was cod fish, potatoes and greens topped with cornbread bread crumbs. I think the breadcrumbs were a little too salty but it didn't affect the entire dish. I also got a morangello spritz which was a house made strawberry purée and I believe Prosecco and it was so refreshing! If you're in the area, you'll definitely want to check this out.

Yelp
Great food and reasonably priced. I would suggest the watermelon salad and any of the focaccia pizzas.

Yelp
Amazing food and service! Hugo is awesome too! I don't know what else I can say - don't come, so I can get a table? lol Love this place!!!

Yelp
Probably our favorite dinner in all of Portugal. After a day of visiting Sintra and Cascais we decided to grab dinner at this amazing restaurant. We had the tapenade, charcuterie platter, pepperoni flatbread, a flatbread sandwich with arugula and sliced ham and our favorite, the octopus. We also tried Touriga Nacional wine for the first time and ordered a bottle it was so good. Highly recommend this hip and delicious restaurant if you're in cascais.

Yelp
Lovely experience. Go before the 1 pm lunch crowd - it's worth getting a table before the crowd sets in. Food made with heart - thank you!

Yelp
Amazing food, better staff!!! A must go in Estoril! Try the raspberry brownie and pear with melted cheese!

Yelp
Wonderful service and great, fresh food. Grilled octopus with potatoes was outstanding. Cod bruschetta and beans with morcela was both good as well. Cold beer and ended with port wine. What a great afternoon in Cascais!

Yelp
3rd time and they do not disappoint. The menu I includes tapas, main courses, desserts and great wine. There is always a line up of people that patiently wait for seating. The staff is very attentive and there to please the patrons. Manager, Kris is amazing! She knows everyone and gives the best meal suggestions! You feel like a local of Cascais when dining at Taberna Clandestina -- I'll always come dine here when in Portugal.

Yelp
After a bit of a wait to be acknowledged after being seated, the staff at Clandestina were great at accommodating special requests for food restrictions. GuGu was our server and so helpful. The meal was tasty and presented well. We ate the house specialty of pasta and prawns but preferred Pesto sauce to their tomato-based sauce. The ambiance was great, with the outdoor seating. We had to ask our neighboring table to not smoke at the time as we had been seated for a while, eating, and they had just joined the area in which no one else was smoking. The wind direction made it uncomfortable for a short time until they stopped smoking. But overall, it was a nice experience and good food.

Yelp
Great food and even better service! Fresh and like and not too expensive. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu.

Michael G.

Yelp
If I could give this 6 stars, I would. One of the best, could be THE best, meals I've ever head. Chris, one of the lead servers, took great care of us. We gave her full control of what to pick for us, and she selected 6 different plates with perfect balance. And...she didn't rush us out, actually encouraging us to stay as long as we want even though they could have filled our table in a heartbeat whenever we decided to leave. GO HERE if you are in Portugal.

Yelp
Wonderful! Wonderful! Will visit again. Great staff and food. Autumn salad was amazing. Not big on Yelp requiring 85 words!!

Yelp
We had the BEST dinner here! The service was amazing and we loved everything about the food! I love octopus and this may have been one of the best ones I've ever had! Even though the restaurant was busy, we only had to wait a bit and it was so worth it! If you're in the area, definitely come here for a meal!

Yelp
Friendly staff, yummy tapas, and really nice atmosphere! Would definitely add this to your Cascais itinerary!

Yelp
While passing through Caiscais we took a stroll down the cute alley of restaurants, it was getting late and seemed like places were starting to close so ended up here at a table outside. The service was excellent, the server gave his wine recommendations, we decided to try the 2019 Quinta do Couquinho and was great! Everything we ordered here was excellent! Fresh! Amazing flavors! We had swordfish carpaccio, octopus, tortellini, prawns and dessert. All delicious! If your in Caiscais definitely check them out!

Yelp
Amazing amazing amazing! We got drinks, appetizers and dessert, and everything was incredible. I recommend the bruschetta and the tortellini with buratta. Another popular dish that we missed out on was the crispy potato skins (and I'm full of regret). Service was great, our waitress was extra kind and spoke 3 languages which helped us out a lot. Also she gave us complimentary wine in shot classes before we left! Small and popular place so don't be surprised if there's a wait. Outdoor and indoor seating, and the ambiance was beautiful. Keep in mind- restaurant is at the top of a long steep hill so it's not the friendliest of spots in Cascais.

Richard F.

Yelp
Stopped in for an early dinner. You need to come early - this play is always busy. Had the papas Bravas & seafood on the appetizer menu. I really just wanted that and a glass of wine. Then I saw the mushroom & truffle ravioli- and I had to get it. It was a 10 out of 10. Highly recommend

Yelp
Found this little gem while wandering around town and absolutely fell in love with it. You can tell its not one of those super touristy places because it's a little farther from the water. The staff was so friendly and gave great recommendations for lunch. We got bruschetta and one of their main cheese and charcuterie boards with sangria and I can honestly say it was the best cheese board I ever had. I'm definitely going to tell everyone I know that visits Portugal to check this place out.

Yelp
Excellent atmosphere and great food. If you're looking for a chill but tasty European experience, definitely come here when in Cascais.

Yelp
We were passing by and saw this " Tiny " restaurant with lots of guests. We walked in and had the best food and wine in Cascais. Highly recommend!
