Best Cheap Eats in NYC

"Positioned near LaGuardia Community College, this global taco spot from Xavier Gomez outperforms its post–Chipotle veneer: city-themed tacos (and wraps, enchiladas, bowls) feature carefully considered combos like the vegetarian Shimla (spicy smashed potatoes with kachumbar, raita, salsa verde) and the Incheon short-rib taco with kimchi and gochujang; the rice is black, the beans are masala-spiced, and a recent fish-taco special showed bright lime and crunchy cabbage promise." - Grub Street

Google
Taco Unico is truly the best Mexican food this side of the Mississippi. We’ve worked our way through so much of the menu and everything is incredible. The enchiladas de camarón are unreal, the green salsa is perfection, the tacos de birria are absolutely delicious, and the ceviche is so fresh and flavorful. Honestly, you just can’t go wrong with anything here. We love it here and recommend it to everyone we know.

Google
Ordered beans and rice last night and my daughter bit into a huge long hair in her beans I’m so disgusted I have called and still haven’t heard back from a manager

Google
The food is good here at Taco Unico. I had the steak enchiladas. My only complaint was that my waitress was a little busy on her personal call to see if I needed anything else (like more soda… 🤣 😂). Maybe she was looking out for my health. 😉 I totally understand if you have to take a personal phone call but she was on that call for the entire 45mins I was at the restaurant. 🤔I would recommend this place and would eat here again, I just hope I have a better experience my next go round.

Google
Absolutely wonderful local place. It's a family joint that just does everything well. From the fantastic salsas that come with the chips, to super fresh and big oysters, to excellent menudo and tacos, I've yet to have anything here that I haven't loved. There are great specials every day and a great happy hour from 15:00 to 18:00. I'm always greeted by fantastic and prompt service and just peeking into the open kitchen you can tell how much care and attention goes into the food here. This is coming from a former chef as well.

Abby R.

Google
Every week it's a good place to eat, but lately the service is terrible. The waitresses never understand me and forget to bring me what I order. I definitely don't recommend it.

Giselle C.

Google
Good taco spot. I went during a winter storm and was happy they were open. Had hot chocolate, tacos de birria, al pastor taco, and a steak enchiladas. Overall everything tasted really good! Would go back especially for the tacos.

Google
I stopped at tacos Unico today and I ordered three carne asada tacos and a side of mild green chili. As you can see from the picture it didn't last long enough for me to even remember to take the photo. I grew up in this neighborhood, I'm 43 years old and recently moved back to the area. This used to be a small jewelry store that I assure you it now sells the best tacos in the city of Denver. The staff is far above and beyond normal service you can tell they truly genuinely care. Not only was my entire meal only $12, I would have gladly paid three times that. In fact I had Mexican food last weekend and spent $37 by myself. I cannot recommend this place strongly enough. We will definitely be going back Taco Tuesday baby

Google
Stopped in last minute and had the birria tacos to go. Went back later that evening to get another order. Best birria tacos I have had in Denver. The salsa is also excellent. Have been back many more times and highly recommend.

Yelp
Hidden gem over here. We came here on a Wednesday before noon and everyone eating there seemed like they're regulars. Salsa is spicy, that green one is awesome, chips are light. Chile relleno got a nice layer of crispy cheese that's excellent. Rice and beans are as good as the next. Steak ranchero sauce makes it great Pozole- yes Flour tortillas are all fluff and awesome

Yelp
I'm surprised that this place has such amazing reviews, even recently. I ordered 2 sets of tacos--Asada 1 plate and then carnitas and al pastor the 2nd plate and my husband and I were not impressed. A bit disappointing considering the recent reviews are amazing. The tacos weren't good nor bad. If I give them a score it would be a score of 5 out of 10. The red salsa was watered down and the green salsa tasted old. The tacos were also cold. I don't think I would be going there again. It's a shame considering Lakewood doesn't have a lot of taco places that are rated good. Nevertheless, the place on the inside looks clean. Lady who rung me up was a bit moody and didn't have a warm aura. Overall, okay tacos but wouldn't go again.

Yelp
The food at Taco Unico is delicious. Very authentic. The barria tacos were amazing. The smothered fries were tasty as well. The giant margs were pricey but yummy.

Yelp
Loved that we could stop by one of our "go to" Mexican food places near the climbing gym. We were hopefully that there would be enough space / open tables with the limited capacity. Thankfully, we snagged the last table. Yay. Ordered my normal enchilada Verdes. My partner had street tacos. House margaritas, chips and their fabulous green and red salsa made for a perfect meal. This is authentic Mexican food. Staff are always friendly and attentive. The interior decor is very simple and basic, meaning the food is the star here - as it should be. So glad to know they're pivoting amidst the pandemic and doing well. All the basic COVID precautions are in place, so please, stop by for either dine in or take out :)

Yelp
Food is very tasty and customer services was on point. Love supporting Family ran restaurants

Yelp
Stopped by this place on a whim and in dire need of a michelada. The food and service were great, but the menu didn't have prices. The total came as a surprise--pretty expensive.

Josue H.

Yelp
I always come to get gorditas . Really good and affordable , the green salsa is the best!

Brian S.

Yelp
Decent tacos, but expensive. I had the Tacos Al Carbon which were good, but not amazing. The green sauce sauce was excellent and frankly kept the food from a 3-star review. However, I was a bit appalled at the cost. The three tacos and chips and salsa to go was over $26. It seemed very pricey given the food quality and the area - this isn't an upscale part of town.

Yelp
Best Fajitas in Colorado. Great lunch or dinner spot on Sheridan. The 3 things that make these fajitas so wonderful you ask?: -homemade flour tortillas -homemade refried beans -high quality chicken grilled to perfection I've eaten here multiple times and only ever ordered the fajitas. I'm gonna continue to dine here at Taco Unico and try some new dishes soon. Friendly staff, FAST service, and the pricing is unbeatable. I don't know how they create such high quality food and sell it very reasonably. I highly recommend you try Taco Unico. I almost forgot about the salsa! They bring out red and green salsa and they are incredible!!

Christa R.

Yelp
The birria tacos are a must. So flavorful. Ceviche platter is amazing to share. A little pricey but good food and drink

America V.

Yelp
10/10 service, I love coming here on my days off or even to pick up lunch for work. The service is amazing, staff is friendly & the owners come out to check on the customers when they can. Food is amazing, I've never had an issue with my order. The environment is so welcoming , the staff has always been well behaved even with the not friendliest customers. I definitely recommend coming here for any of your Mexican food needs!

Yelp
Blink and you will drive past this little gem. My wife and I have been twice now and I can't say enough about the carnitas tacos. Melt in your mouth good! Add a cold Tecate and the meal is complete. My wife loves the Biria tacos. Don't skip this place on Taco Tuesday or any other day of the week.

Jessica G.

Yelp
Very delicious food! We were just trying to find someplace new, and this place did not disappoint! They even made me pancakes after breakfast hours!!

Kathy B.

Yelp
Excellent authentic Mexican cuisine. Wonderful service, clean and festive atmosphere.

Jeff J.

Yelp
Simply, the BEST!!! Chicken enchiladas, rice, beans, salsa, chips, guacamole... Everything super fresh and tasty. We were visiting Denver from Seattle and didn't have a good recommendation for good local Mexican food. We got SOOO lucky. I wish we had Taco Unico near us in the PNW. We'd eat here every week. Well, we'll at least eat here every time we visit!!

Yelp
Low key joint on south Sheridan. Probably no more than 15 seats inside, most customers were eating big meals and drinking. Most conversation in Spanish. Stopped for some tacos and a margarita on a hot day. Very friendly service, huge marg, great tacos. The pickled red onions are, as far as I know, not standard to birria tacos and were a nice welcome bit of crunch and acidity. My only *very* slight complaint is that we weren't warned that happy hour started in two minutes so we paid for two margaritas when it would have been 2/1 two minutes later, but that's on me for not noticing (and that's all done on a computer anyways - no one's fault but my own). I give a strong endorsement for this place.

Maureen J.

Yelp
This place (as everyone else has said) is a hidden gem. Such a cute little spot with really good food and drinks, fairly priced meals, and clean! The service was wonderful, someone was training and he was still really kind and attentive. Definitely recommend for a casual date night or bringing family.
google avatar

Yelp
Glad to find this hidden gem in Lakewood! The waitress was super friendly, the food was delicious, and surprisingly affordable! Best Chicharrón burrito I've eaten in Colorado. Can't wait to go back!

Stacey R.

Yelp
Been coming here weekly (sometimes more than once a week) for two years now for either sit down or takeaway. Everything we've had on the menu has been beyond delicious. Their tacos are to die for & Sarah is the absolute best. Can't recommend this place enough. We've made it into our weekly family dinner and love the tradition.

Yelp
Well, I hope they're ready for me because I'm about to be a new regular here! We just moved in about a block away and have been getting to know the neighborhood (aka finding which restaurants we love). We came here for lunch one day and had chile rellenos, chicken enchiladas and some margs and beers. Everything was delish! The gal that served us was also incredibly friendly and sweet. We talked to her about how we had just bought our house nearby and would be stopping in regularly because everything was so tasty. I don't eat meat other than fish, so it can be hard to find a place that doesn't just serve pork green chile with most entrees. But I was able to get the chile relleno plate with plain (no meat) green chile and it was so dang good! Also highly recommend the house marg. They put a really delicious chamoy and it just adds that *something extra*. It's perfection. Of all the choices for Mexican restaurants in the area, it can be hard to choose where to eat. But you won't be disappointed if you choose to give Taco Unico a try!!ashley

Yelp
Yummy! We had the appetizer platter with ceviche, shrimp, fried fish and oysters-everything was fresh and perfectly fried. The dipping sauces complemented the dish perfectly. We also ordered a michelada botano and it was HUGE so we couldn't finish our main dish of a cheese enchilada and crispy relleno but the beans and rice were super good. Back to the Michelada Botano- served in a pitcher with two Coronitas, beef jerky, mango pieces, orange slices, several shrimp, celery and a fruit roll up straw, very refreshing and filling but we should have shared they were so big. Anyway, service was great, wait time for food and drinks was minimal and the place was very clean, will definitely go back when in the area.

Yelp
Great family owned establishment that never disappoints! I have sampled quite a bit from the menu and the service from the amazing staff is always positive and quick.

Victoria I.

Yelp
Don't just drive by this one. Doesn't look fancy from the outside but this was some of the best Mexican we've had in Denver. Service was great & very friendly. Very affordable. Will travel clear across town to visit again.

Mckenzie L.

Yelp
This place is unbelievable. This little hole in the wall restaurant has blown my mind. I got fajitas, a pint of beans and rice, and chips and salsa to go. It was super quick and the lady who took my order was nice. The food was AMAZING. So much flavor and cooked beautifully. The green salsa they gave me was to die for. This is some of the best Mexican food I've ever had and it's definitely my new favorite place!
google avatar

Sarah Z.

Yelp
This place is great. No frills seating and environment. The food is fresh and hot and there's nothing I could think to complain about. 10/10 will eat here again.

Yelp
I'm on a quest for the best Mexican food in my neighborhood, so we walked to Taco Unico to get some chow after a long day of traveling. Taco Unico is a cute little Mexican restaurant in Westwood. The service was excellent and the waitress was super friendly. They had the Broncos game on which my my BF happy. I ordered the enchiladas which didn't disappoint and my bf ordered the Chile Relleno. They offer Chile Relleno two ways: soft and crispy! The soft Relleno was absolutely delicious and well worth the under $10 price. All in all an excellent experience and a place I'm sure we'll be back to.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Food & Service was nothing short of amazing, a nice little hidden gem! The prices are inexpensive and the margaritas are delicious.
google avatar

Annette A.

Yelp
My first time eating here today and it was delicious! I will definitely come back here when I'm in the area. The serve was fast and the food had lots of flavor. The egg and chorizo burrito is a definite try. They have a variety of food to choose from they also have various cocktails to serve I would definitely recommend this place as a must-try if you're in the area.

Molly H.

Yelp
Tacos and micheladas are delicious! Service is always good and attentive. Always easy to pop in, sit right down and enjoy a good meal!

Yelp
Simply not kidding when I have this 5 stars. I thought the last Mexican place we ate in Denver was the best in Denver but if I could give more stars I would. The place is nothing like the fancy shmancy restaurant. That's what good about it. Hubby's niece ordered some homemade margarita, nice big glass! It's homemade, excuse me! I'm not worthy! I tried and I went "wow!" I ordered chicken fajita, Hubby had his carnitas and the niece had something with cheese stuffing. They all come with tortillas either flour or corn, then a plate of beans, rice and salsa salad. Very delicious! I couldn't believe it because the place looks nothing from the outside. This is truly authentic. How do we know? Because we didn't see any tourists except us. Everyone else is local. Found another great authentic restaurant woohoo!

Austin C.

Yelp
Save your money. Go to the grocery store and get El Paso taco seasoning and it will taste better than this place. $40 for 4 tacos and a burrito. Stringy pork and steak meat, couldn't even tell which meat it was. Street tacos with lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes? Dry burrito with boring green chili. We were the only people in the restaurant. Sorry but won't be back.
google avatar

Elena R.

Yelp
I am from California on a work trip here in Lakewood, CO and I have to say the meat for the Taco Tuesday $1 tacos is delicious!! I also had a michelada and I asked for more Clamato and chamoy and it was also good. The tacos though delicious!!

Yelp
Compared to the other reviews Taco Unico has received, my review seems uncharacteristic for them. My wife was craving chile rellenos, so we gave them a try. I ordered Plato de Chile Rellenos (crispy) and 4 tacos, 2 Pastor and 2 Asada. Total bill a little over $17. My son had the tacos and thought they were A-Ok..not bad, not great. Meats didn't particularly pop with flavor but he enjoyed them with all toppings and salsa. The Chili Relleno plate seemed a little pricey at $10.50 for what you get. The chiles are either marinated or maybe even pickled and had a distinct tartness with no other flavor. Perhaps a matter of preference, but I prefer fire roasted chiles in rellenos. They were supposed to be crispy, but I did take them to go, giving them time to get soggy. Rice and beans were very good. Ladies running the front were very friendly which is a nice plus. The interior, as other have mentioned, is much nicer than its outward appearance. Give them a try and see what you think!

Yelp
Read about this place on Yelp. Reviews were not wrong. Delicious food at a great price. Well worth checking out.
google avatar

Sothary C.

Yelp
This place is definitely under rated. The location in it safe is a bit tricky only because you would be stopping to turn in the middle of full on traffic. Also, the signage doesnt look that great either, but who cares their food!!!! The food and service is amazing here. They don't skimp on the chips and salsa. The tacos and smothered burritos is also so good! Worth it, believe me!
google avatar

Yelp
Being engaged to a Mexican I've had access to some great food. Between her Mom, Aunts, the restaurants and everything in-between. Let's just say I've been spoiled by some great women who take pride in their cooking. Taco Unico has forced me to have some difficult conversations. Like how their rice and beans are better than my future mother in laws and why I brought their recipe for her to use... But that's my problem. We were in Denver three days and ate here four times. The birria is the absolute best I've ever had and is a must try. I also loved the carne asada and huevos con chorizo. Their sauces were my favorite. The guacamole was the coolest tasting I've had and the green sauce is only for the brace. Very spicy! Give Taco Unico a try and you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Alec L.

Yelp
$4 for a jaritos soda and $4 for rice and beans. Go to a food truck or spend the money on a nice restaurant. Overpriced

Kelsey D.

Yelp
This place is amazing. It just never disappoints. We've made this place almost a weekly stop! Fajitas and Birria are a MUST!
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
1st time. Stopped in for a quick 3 tacos to-go order. Very good and reasonable at $6.34. Great portions. Had me in and out in 8minutes. Thanks!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
I have to say everytime I have come into our favorite little taco joint I have had exceptional service, welp not today. Walked in asked for a booth and waitress immediately sat us at a table, asked again for a booth and she said no, I said table. When there was a booth that needed to be cleaned off. We sat down and she came over and threw the menus on the table after giving us dirty looks the whole time. My party and I just got up and left. I have to say I am pretty disappointed because we love this taco place. I will not eat here if she is working that day. Being that covid is keeping a lot of people away from eating out you would think her attitude would have been a little different.

Yelp
this place is amazing the food and the service was great i love how they accommodate requests even when it seems like the world is ending! our server was very sweet i did not get her name a older hispanic women with glasses and a pony tail she was so sweet and helped me and my friend make our selection! she took her time and went over the special amd the menu with us and everything the sweetest lady ever she was very busy and still took time to help us out ! if i could give this place a 1000/10 i would the food is amazing! the staff is very friendly! & the experience was one i will remember forever thanks to our server & this great establishment

Yelp
I know it's a rough time for all restaurants, but our most recent visit will end here, never to go back again. The facts: I just wanted to get a bit more information regarding a shrimp taco meal that I have never ordered from Taco Unico in the past. We came in about 4:30pm to an empty restaurant. The place was clean and atmosphere was very pleasant. We sat down, looked at the menus for a couple of minutes and then waitress engaged us and ready to take our order. I asked the waitress about the shrimp taco meal. She immediately replied you get 3 big tacos with the meal, then she told us that these are the big shrimp tacos and each taco is $3/ea. When the meal arrived, I immediately noticed the taco's were much smaller than Big Tacos. I also noticed that the tacos were only 1/2 full and they only put 5 tiny shrimp in the tiny tacos. So, the taco tasted fine but were less than minimally satisfying. Now accompanying the 3 tiny shrimp taco meal, included rice, beans, lettuce, small slice of tomato and 2 small slices of avocado. I am not a big eater by any means but this meal was below what you normally would expect from other Mexican restaurants. Small portions were fresh and food was good but not great. When the bill arrived, I quickly noticed that the tiny shrimp meal was $16.99. I was clearly led to believe that at $3/per taco plus the sides that were included, reasonably would not exceed $10-$12 and $12.00 for a portion of this size still would be nearing exorbitant. I chatted with the waitress and she was anything but understanding. This place has really changed from a few months back

Yelp
We tried this for the first time, and were very pleasantly surprised. It's delish across the board. Some of the best chicken tacos in Denver or anywhere. The beans and rice are legit like homemade. The salsas were very hot, so I had to go easy on them...but they were fresh and good, so if you like it hot, you'll like their salsa. If you want to eat in, they had a selection of good tequilas behind the bar.

Nathan K.

Yelp
Ive only been on weekends. Always people there cuz of their good food and drink. The pozole is nice and they have good beverages. The family that owns this restaurant will take great care of you.
google avatar

Ivette E.

Yelp
Prompt service! Waitress was friendly and served us quick, food was good! Had a taco de pastor and a taco de birria with some rice & beans and everything was pretty tasty. My girlfriend and I shared a small bowl of Pozole and let me tell you! It was delicious and the meat was nice and tender, it was a little thick so it made me think it wasn't the freshest but it was still pretty good. She also got some chilaquiles which said it had the right amount of crunch! Will definitely come back :)
google avatar

Marti H.

Yelp
Bummer. I really enjoyed the authenticity of this restaurant but am fairly confident the food has MSG. I am super sensitive to MSG. The salsa was my favorite part but am uncertain what had the MSG. such excellent, excellent, service too.
google avatar

Claire A.

Yelp
The Serrano sauce served with chips and salsa is spicy and fantastic. The tacos di birria were phenomenal. The asada burrito was off the charts. I will be back!
google avatar

Soul M.

Yelp
You will not be disappointed! I had chicken tacos price was right flavor good and they have adult beverages for your pleasure I am going back menu looks bomb!
google avatar

Shawn G.

Yelp
Great prices on the street tacos, DEFINITELY grab a barbacoa. Al Pastor was pretty tasty too. Smaller dining space, so COVID restrictions aren't helping turnaround for dine in, but they still do take out. Wait staff was super friendly and it's a family owned business. Be back soon!
