My favorite dining companion and I, love Mexican food. We try new ones often, and have a few favorites we frequent more often. Tacos La Familia, is now on that list. There are several reasons why.
When you walk into Tacos La Familia, there's a small dining area and then another dining area down the hall. It's cozy, and it smelled delicious. As soon as we were seated we were greeted with chips and salsa, but not just one kind...four! Yes. Four different salsas. That's a strong start!
There was a fairly standard but tasty red salsa, then a slightly smoky salsa verde, and two different hot roasted salsas. I love having this kind of variety. Take note, other Mexican restaurants; This is chips and salsa done RIGHT!
There's certainly more to Tacos La Familia than just chips and salsa, of course. The menu isn't large for a Mexican restaurant, but the selections are solid. One that immediately caught both of our attention, was the lamb stew. You don't typically see that at a Mexican restaurant. We had to order it, of course. We also ordered the habanero wings, as those too were unusual for a Mexican restaurant. We then ordered three individual tacos, one asada, one cabeza, and one barbacoa. We can't very well go to a restaurant with taco in the title, and not get tacos, now can we?
Our food arrived quickly. We received the lamb stew and the wings first. The stew smelled downright heavenly. It was so very hot, but I simply couldn't wait. I scooped up a little chunk of lamb with some broth on my spoon, and blew on it. I was hungry, but was not trying to burn my mouth on this molten liquid. It did not disappoint. It was just the right combination of salty and fatty to go with the tender pull-apart lamb. It also contained carrots, onions, and other veggies. We devoured it quickly.
The wings had a very subtle flavor, but had a nice amount of heat on the back end. They were big and meaty, and well-cooked. They had no breading, but were fried. All in all not bad. These were not why we were here, anyway.
The tacos came when we were about halfway through the stew. They all looked and smelled good. They had the proper adornments for a Mexican street taco: protein, raw white onion, and cilantro. The asada taco was excellent. It had lots of steaky goodness, and it wasn't overcooked. The cabeza was great, one of my favorite cabeza tacos I've had. I definitely recommend them. Lastly, we had the barbacoa taco. I generally am not a huge fan of barbacoa. It too often tends to be sweet and I don't care for sweet sauced meet. This was a notable exception. This was very savory barbacoa, with no sweetness. It was impressive. I'd honestly order all of the tacos again. They were all good representations of their respective tacos.
We left Tacos La Familia with full stomachs, and some leftovers. If, like us, you've never heard of Tacos La Familia, you should do yourself a favor and go. If you've already been there...then I don't need to tell you how good they are!
