On the Grid : Tai O Bakery

"Tai O Bakery is a famous one with 30 years history. All products are hand-made freshly. You can try Tai O Donut,Chocolate with Peanuts,Chocolate with Almond,Pre-order Birthday Cake, Chinese Walnut Cookie there. For their signature product, it should be TaiO donut (a sweet deep fried buns of dough similar to doughnut). You can always see a long queue waiting for the their freshly doughnuts outside the bakery." - Helen Lam

This was my favorite part of my visit to Tai O fishing village. The donuts were freshly made and they have this nice eggy taste. The crust was crunchy and sweet, while the inside was airy and soft. It was perfect to pair with a scoop of icecream. I also bought some mango mochi, I can't say that the mango was the sweetest because I had tasted better mangoes in the Philippines but the texture of the mochi is quite nice, it is soft and chewy. The mango mochi is also served cold, very nice for the hot weather.

The donut was very light and airy. The middle is eggy tasting which I personally wasn’t a fan of but that’s just a personal thing.

We came across this local doughnut and we decided to give it a try, and it amazed us so much. Although it just looks like some ordinary doughnut covered with sugar, it was so soft and fluffy inside. And it has very rich creamy taste inside, as if there is real custard inside. Really highly recommended.

This shop is for takeout only and the lady there was really trying to sell me their donuts, which are the deep fried Chinese confectionary coated in sugar. I didn’t feel like having that, but I wanted the mango mocha. What a pleasant surprise. The mango inside was huge, juicy and fresh. The moshi was a thin layer over the mango and it was delightful. I actually debated whether to have another one. Highly recommend their mango mocha.

Delicious, hot and fluffy donuts. They don't bake too much in one go, so you get them quite fresh. Also not too sweet. A must try! We went on a weekday, so the line was manageable.

Tai O Bakery is a very famous for its signature Chinese-style doughnuts. There is always a long queue of customers outside the bakery, all waiting to buy their freshly handmade doughnuts. Chinese walnut cookies, coconut tarts, egg tarts and cakes are also available.

The doughnut has a nice crust on the outside and a fluffy interior. It's generously coated with sugar sprinkles. Overall, it's a good doughnut, though not the best I've ever had. The taste is fairly typical, similar to most doughnuts I've tried. I'd buy it again if I had the calories quota, but otherwise, I’d probably pass.

Yelp
One does not simply visit Tai O without a visit to the Tai O Bakery. Must try their special donuts, Tai O Donuts. At HKD13 each, they are freshly made, batch by batch. If you arrive and the basket is empty, they will ask you to line up while they make new batch. The wait isn't too long, maybe 5-7 minutes. Once it comes out of the fryer, it is then rolled in sugar. Mmm enjoy them while they're still warm! So light, fluffy and airy! Good for sharing too.

Yelp
Pretty good!! Reasonably priced, friendly staff, interesting take on the donut that you can also find in Taiwan. Would definitely give it a try!
