The 23 Best Places to Go in India in 2023

"For the longest time, a trip to the Andamans meant picking between homestays or the only premium boutique hotel on the island. That’s changed in the past few years, with resorts like Taj Exotica Resort & Spa and Jalakara. The most recent entrant to the mix is Tilar Siro, a CGH Earth outpost on Havelock Island (now, Swaraj Dweep)."

Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Andamans

"Set the scene.Cloaked in green, shaded by coconut, jackfruit, and banana trees, amid mangrove forests like a jungle lair or a scene from Lost. There are stilted villas with rounded thatched roofs and polished wooden interiors made from sustainable timber, all set around the delicious curve of Radhanagar Beach. Getting here is a mission in itself—fly, ferry, and drive across bumpy roads to this archipelago outpost amid a fragile eco-system. What’s the story? This is part of India's well-regarded Taj hotel group and was nearly a decade in the making thanks to various challenges with permissions and construction. The location makes the most of its setting on one of Asia's most incredible beaches, a pristine white strand surrounded by lush jungle. The hotel has been built with minimum impact on its surroundings, and no tree was felled; it’s leading the way in the region with a commitment to solar power, bio-gas, and organic produce from local farmers. What can we expect from our room?Climb white wooden steps to the standalone huts with U-shaped thatched roofs, inspired by the homes built by the islands' Jarawa people. Each has a long patio with seating, and sliding doors open to reveal a huge angular four-poster swathed in mosquito netting and enough floor space to hold a dance recital. Hidden behind a pair of sliding doors behind the bed is a spacious bathroom; to one side is a standalone tub and a large walk-in shower. If you are looking for clear ocean views, though, you may be disappointed: The beach is protected from sight by dense foliage. How about the food and drink?Excellent. The Turtle House restaurant is where breakfast is served, and also has a delicious global menu. But the standout is Settlers: The chef spent months traveling throughout the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, discovering local dishes inspired by the regions that the islands' settlers came from (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and more). Anything to say about the service?Warm and dedicated—courteous enough to make sure you're taken care of, but relaxed in a manner befitting a beach hotel. Who comes here?Indian families and experienced travelers who've already been to much of the continent; serious scuba divers and the occasional Bollywood star. How does this fit into the region?Havelock Island is the main island of the archipelago, and has a rustic, Costa Rica-meets-Maldives feel. It's also filled with lots of hostels, backpacker retreats, and two- to three-star hotels. This is the smartest place on the island, although there’s also a lovely, chic boutique hotel in the interior, and a more rustic beach hotel nearby on Radhanagar—but this is by far the most significant one in the region. All of the restaurants and dive shops are a short drive away. Anything we missed? The pool is great—high up and peeking out through the treeline for a glimpse of the ocean. The gym is also huge. But this place is all about fun on the water, and the Taj can arrange kayaking through the mangroves at night to see the bioluminescence, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, and forays to see turtles nesting. Is it worth it—and why?Definitely. Some of the most beautiful beaches and dive spots in the world are in the Andamans, and this game-changing Taj makes a lovely base from which to explore them." - Sarah Khan

The Best New Hotels in the World: 2019 Hot List

"This Taj outpost is set on Havelock, an Indian island closer to Myanmar than its mother country, with dense forests and beautiful beaches. And this hotel has both: In front of it, two miles of pale, floury sand drops gently into a sapphire sea, and soaring above it are jungles of giant mahua and padauk trees that have stood here for centuries. Amid the palm trees and ponds of the landscaped, 46-acre estate are 50 contemporary villas, with whitewashed wooden walls and curvaceous roofs inspired by the homes of the indigenous Jarawa tribe. All have muslin-draped four-posters and deep bathtubs from which to admire the stars through glass-paneled ceilings. Most guests spend their days reclining on day-beds beside the Olympic-length pool, swimming in the Indian Ocean, or propping up on the long bar, chatting to the friendly staff who whip up coconut cocktails and serve sensationally light crab salads, tandoor lobster, and chicken baked in bamboo stems. For the more active there’s fishing for tuna, paddle-boarding to remote beaches, snorkeling in the clear sea, and hiking in the interior with expert naturalists; others might prefer an Ayurvedic treatment in Jiva spa. No one can fail to be impressed. FLASH POINT The waters in the mangroves surrounding Havelock are rich in phosphorescent algae: go kayaking on a moonless night for the full Tinkerbell effect. +91 22-6665-1198, tajhotels.com; doubles from about $710." - CNT Editors

Why Your Next Island Getaway Should Be In India

"The Andamans’ first luxury retreat—newly opened Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, a 46-acre spread along Radhanagar Beach—was nearly a decade in the making. The islands’ heritage is evident throughout, from the Nicobari welcome song to the 72 villas on stilts with domed roofs modeled after huts of the region’s Jarawa tribe. For the Settlers restaurant, executive chef Kaushik Misra traveled throughout the archipelago to source recipes from Indian communities that migrated to the isles: steamed grouper fillet in banana leaf from the Keralites in Diglipur; lobster pepper fry from the Tamil community on Mayabunder; and a raw banana cutlet from the East Bengali refugees now living on Havelock."

We visited Taj from 8-Aug to 11-Aug for celebrating my birthday. It was our first experience staying with them. We loved the property because it has excellent facilities and the rooms were the best! The best part was the hospitality - the entire staff was extremely courteous and helpful. The activities within the property were top-notch - my 7-year old kid loved them (Thanks Nomadic Tribes team)! Though the food was tasty there were not many options. But they made the customisations we wanted like smaller portions etc. and thus made up for the lack of options. The staff went the extra mile to ensure our stay was comfortable and memorable. Shoutouts to Mr. Shubham and Mr. Vikas from restaurant, who served us whole-heartedly and even prepared a food package for my kid to help during our travel. Even the front desk staff was very helpful. Overall it was the best stay experience till date and we will definitely return next year!!

The exceptional care and attention from the team at Taj began well before our arrival. Ms. Veeralakshmi and Mr. Rajiev personally reached out in advance to guide us through every detail of our arrangements, ensuring a seamless and stress-free experience. Their warmth, professionalism, and genuine hospitality became the heart of our stay.||The property is a world of its own — nestled right in front of the breathtaking Radhanagar Beach, which feels like a private slice of paradise. Our spacious two-bedroom villa with a private pool was both luxurious and homely, offering the perfect space for our family to bond and unwind.||The Turtle House restaurant delighted us with fresh, flavorful dishes, while the infinity pool offered serene ocean views that felt almost unreal. We were impressed by how every corner of the property is meticulously maintained — from the lush greenery to the pristine pathways — making strolls around the resort a treat in themselves.||The evening lantern ritual was pure magic, and the souvenir photo frame we received was such a thoughtful gesture, reminding us of the memories we made here.||What stood out most was the team’s intuitive service — they seemed to anticipate our needs even before we voiced them. Whether it was the buggy rides offered with a smile, the staff remembering our preferences, or the way they made us feel truly cared for, it all spoke of Taj’s signature hospitality.||I will most certainly return, not just for the beauty of the place, but for the warmth of the people who make it extraordinary.

We loved our 3-day stay at Taj Exotica in the Andamans! The stay was extremely comfortable due to the outstanding service provided by Taj staff - in particular, we'd like to call out Abhishek at the front office, Rupa and Shubham at Settlers restaurant for their attention. The food - both the breakfast buffet as well as ala carte lunch/dinner - was just delicious. The villa was very spacious, and the campus itself is gorgeous. The only downer was the rains which Taj couldn't control!

Taj property at Havelock, Andaman is one of the finest Taj property I have ever stayed. Location at Radhanagar beach is just wao. The rooms are so big and had extra bed for my kid.It was a real villa room. The service is not 1. All the staffs were so warm and welcoming. They have taken care of us like king and queen.. They have customised the service for us looking at our schedule and even arranged breakfast after regular breakfast time. The staffs were so supportive and very proactive. The food was amezing, bit pricy though. We stayed there for 3 nights and all food items were above Whatever we wanted they prepared with love. They even took care of pickup and drop till Ferry point. We really felt like a member of their family. I would highly recommend the place. Must go place.. Plan your ⛴️ in advance and sync the flight timings accordingly.

Had an absolutely wonderful stay at Taj Exotica Andaman. The resort is nestled right in the heart of a lush rainforest and offers direct access to one of the cleanest, most pristine beaches I’ve ever seen. The staff were incredibly courteous and made us feel truly welcomed throughout our stay. The food was exceptional, with a wide variety of delicious options that exceeded expectations. A perfect blend of nature, luxury, and hospitality, couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Andamans stays true to the name Taj and their motto of mixing luxury with tradition. We were welcomed by team giving us all the required information and then presenting a traditional welcome song. Our room was a total luxury, one that you could or could not imagine with Taj. There are 3 different restaurants: 1) Turtle House - Bar cum Restaurant serving Mediterranean and Mexican cuisines for lunch and dinner respectively. 2) Shoreline - All day dining Multi Cuisine Restaurant. 3) Settlers - A speciality restaurant requiring 12 hours prior reservation. The swimming pool is 50 meters long and has an infinity look towards the beach. The property itself has a private beach just like other Taj beachside properties. On clear evenings they have Hi-Tea over there, which you can enjoy watching the sun set behind the mountains. The waves can be heard till your rooms too. There is also a dive centre providing activities like Scuba and Snorkelling. The nature is so well protected, that you can see or hear different birds and insects. They also do a traditional Lantern setting believed to be a pathway to the ancestors.

Taj Exotica at the Havelock island, Andamans is one of the very best properties we have stayed at. The villas are huge and extremely well furnished. Attention to detail is top notch, the adjoining private Radhanagar beach is pure icing on the cake. The hospitality extended by all the staff is incomparable and of a very high standard. Kudos to all the staff there who make the Taj experience completely worth it. Its hard to find out a single fault with the property and its amenities, the delicious food that they serve, and the exemplary service of all the staff there. Their service with a smile and the way they go beyond their domain to make your stay comfortable is really praiseworthy. Highly recommended. However if I at all have to pick a cons, it is that the adjoining beach is pretty far from most of the villas. Its a good 5 minutes walk or you may always avail a buggy or gold car which is available in campus. Overall my experience was wonderful. Kudos to the exemplary team of Taj Exotica, Andamans
