Taj Lands End, Mumbai - A Mixed Experience
We stayed at Taj Lands End from 21st to 24th December and had a rather mixed experience.
The first impression was positive - the lobby is expansive and grand. However, check-in took longer than expected. We had booked Luxury Rooms, expecting a clear Sea Link view. One room had a partial view, while the second had none at all. To the hotel’s credit, they were kind enough to change the room the next day.
The rooms were spacious, and the bathrooms were well-maintained, but aesthetically the rooms felt underwhelming for a Taj property. The bed skirt looked old and stained, which was quite disappointing. The mini bar was completely unstocked, making it practically useless.
On the second night, the AC in one of the rooms stopped working and could not be fixed the entire night, making it extremely uncomfortable and suffocating. The issue was resolved the next morning, and the hotel thoughtfully sent a bottle of wine as an apology, which was a very sweet gesture.
The most concerning experience, however, was related to mini bar checks. Instead of being done during housekeeping, staff came separately and knocked on doors irrespective of whether guests were inside. While my wife was asleep in the room, a staff member rang the bell 2-3 times and, receiving no response, used the master key to enter the room - only to check the mini bar, which isn’t even replenished. This was extremely disturbing.
When I raised this at the reception, the manager bluntly said that the DND sign was not switched on. That response was unacceptable. If the hotel already knows a guest is inside the room (there is an indicator light outside the door), no staff member should enter without explicit permission, especially for a non-essential task like a mini bar check.
Compared to other Taj properties I’ve stayed at, this one feels worn out. While the property is undeniably huge, it lacks aesthetics, and even the outdoor areas look dated. Unfortunately, the staff attitude overall felt rude and not very courteous, which is surprising for a Taj hotel.
That said, the housekeeping team - especially Mahesh and Sujit - were excellent, polite, and genuinely helpful.
Overall, Taj Lands End has scale and location working for it, but it seriously needs upgrades in aesthetics, staff training, and guest privacy protocols to match the standards expected from the Taj brand.
