There’s a wide variety of Japanese food to choose from at a reasonable price. The teriyaki beef has good flavor, but it’s a bit on the tough side. #TravellingAsACouple

Once Again Back At Taka.. Still One Of The Best Eats In Town! Decent Pricing Till Today. For Me That Meal Can Last Me Past Dinner, Can't Speak For The Rest.. Keep It Up.

Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing because all the reviews are amazing. Anyway DONT order the teriyaki fish! It was disgusting. Fish had a terrible texture and taste, sauce was bland and watery. Left most of it. Waste of money. Once again I may have just ordered the worst thing on the menu but I won’t be back to test that theory…

I’ve been to Taka 3 separate times. I keep coming back because the price is so good and the food tastes good. I’ve gotten tempura veggies with udon soup, fish katsu with miso soup, and agedashi tofu. The best dish hands down was the agedashi tofu - it was so flavorful and perfectly filling. This is my favorite lunch spot in Perth! I will continue to frequent this spot.

Super yummy! Their beef teriyaki and the beef noodles are so good. The place itself is very simple, nothing fancy, you may share the table with some other people but the food is amazing. Pretty cheap as well.

I've had the odd meal here over the years. Sometimes the chicken katsu was dry and looked and tasted like it had been cooked hours before arrival so I was pleasantly surprised on my most recent visit this evening. A generous serve of fresh, tasty, perfectly cooked chicken with rice, pickle and miso soup for only $12.50! Superb value! Free condiments and delicious hot tea.

Taka’s Kitchen on Barrack Street is a no-frills Japanese eatery that prioritizes affordability over ambiance or service. If you’re looking for a quick, budget-friendly meal in the heart of Perth, it’s a solid option—just don’t expect to be blown away by the experience. The interior is very basic, resembling a work cafeteria with plain tables and minimal decor. There’s no attempt to create a cozy or inviting atmosphere, so it’s not a place where you’d linger or bring someone to impress. The functional setup does the job for a quick meal, but it doesn’t add to the dining experience. As for the food, it’s decent enough for the price. The menu offers standard Japanese options like teriyaki chicken, katsu curry, and udon, all served in generous portions. The flavors are average—nothing outstanding, but nothing bad either. It’s the kind of food that fills you up without emptying your wallet, which is a rare find in the city center. The biggest drawback, however, is the service. The staff can come across as moody or uninterested, which detracts from the overall experience. A little friendliness or enthusiasm would go a long way in improving the vibe. Overall, Taka’s Kitchen is best suited for those on a budget who care more about portion sizes than presentation or service. It’s not a place you’ll rave about, but it gets the job done when you’re after a cheap, satisfying meal in the CBD.

If you want something fulfilling for your appetite but also something simple then this place is the answer. Usually Japanese cuisine is considered pricey in some places but it’s pretty reasonable here.

Yelp
Affordable, loud when busy, lots of tables and decent food. Portion sizes are adequate for the price you pay with a good variety of sushi, sashimi and ramen. Popular spot for lunch during the week.

Yelp
Taka Barrack St has been around for a very long time and very popular with students, CBD office workers and the backpackers community. The food has always been consistently cooked and we never found any problem with the serving. The large meal at Taka always comes with a bowl of miso soup and most of the meals come under $10 price tags. The premise has a lot of seating which gets filled quite quickly especially during peak eating hours (lunch & dinner). The go to meal for us is usually the karaage chicken in large portion, but there are a lot of various meals in the menu that people can choose from. These days Taka also sells some side dishes such as edamame, takoyaki and gyoza. Unlimited flow of hot tea is easily accessible for customers. I think Taka will not have any shortage of customers in the years to come.

Yelp
Come hungry, leave happy without losing an arm and a leg. Food is fresh and tasty, and there's free tea. We ordered a bit too much to be honest but it's so rare to find an affordable place these days. My katsu don was simple but great. The 'special' (announced on cashier desk) was great too, with a lovely broth; pretty mild but there's sauces and spices on the table by the tea if you need them. Our gyoza was a bit too crunchy and a bit bland. Overall however this place is a winner in our books.

Ric E.

Yelp
Cheap Japanese eats. Decor & service match the low price tag. Taka is not your typical Japanese restaurant as it's got a very cheap look compared to others but at a $10 price tag per meal you won't complain. Big serves. Everything you'd want on the menu. Big tables. Minus is the self serve sauce table. Having to squeeze past holding a tiny shallow bowl of soy is disastrous.

Yelp
Love this place.... always busy. The service is quick from ordering at the counter to receiving your meal. Takeaway is available which is really convenient when you are on a quick lunch. They have a huge menu but I love the tofu curry so much that's all I really order, you get four huge tofu blocks with a rich curry sauce with chunks of carrot and side of pickled veg on a big bed of rice. There is green tea available and lots of sauces including fresh wasabi.

Josh C.

Yelp
Foods great, especially for the price, only thing is service could be nicer. Cashiers always unhappy to take my order and few times I wasn't even given chopsticks with my meal. Also can get quite hot in there but other wise, I'd recommend this place to anyone

Juliana K.

Yelp
Cheap and fresh sushi in the heart of town makes for an ideal lunch when you're on the run (not from the po-po, just generally rushing around town). The restaurant itself is very basic, almost like a food hall. They sell all the Japanese favourites, so make sure you get in early if you want to eat in, as all the tables go pretty quickly at lunchtime. Cash only!

Henrique K.

Yelp
Lost count the number of times I've been to this restaurant. If you are on the run and wants something yummy and cheap can't get any better than Takas. I tried the Teriyaki tofu for the first time ever and I love it! Perfectly cooked and the amount of teriyaki sauce was just right. I also ordered the large assorted sushi (wich comes with miso soup) and was excellent as usual. My two year old daughter managed to eat a whole bowl of udon noodle soup, so I reckon it must be alright. It was nice of Takas to have a sign at the cashier letting customers know that the prices are about to increase (in November 2012), fair enough :0)

Yelp
Very very cheap Japanese cuisine and very fast service as well. No wonder this restaurant is so popular to everyone. This is an excellent place to eat out when you don't have that much on you!!!

Bri W.

Yelp
Fresh, fast and cheap - who can complain about that? A staple of the Perth office and student crowd, taka never fails to deliver on it's simple but delicious menu. Get in early to get a table, and don't linger!

Jeffrey C.

Yelp
If you want to eat some decent Japanese food at a great value then I would recommend Taka! I always enjoyed coming here for a quick yet affordable meal. The peak hour lunch time during the weekdays is very busy so do keep that in mind. Quality of the meals is fairly standard for Japanese food. Everything I tried was at least decent and have no complaints about the food here. Based on the amount of traffic this restaurant seems to get they are doing well.

Yelp
Another piggy back off of Laura D's review because she was the one who suggested we have lunch there. So the review: I'm kinda biased on my sushi because I've tried it all over the world. So with that said I've never had like fast food sushi. Meaning it was all preassembled and ready to sell. Typically, I dread sushi done like this and steer clear of it at all cost. I've actually never tried preassembled sushi waiting for sale. So I was making snotty remarks in my head as I walked in with Laura(BTW I trusted her food selections at this point) and showed no discomfort haha. So we ordered and came to realize the place only takes cash and me being a wonderful tourist had no Australian money. That was quickly resolved by Laura(Did I give you an IOU paper?) and we went about our business. So first bite and I was leveled, it was beyond fresh and it tasted beyond legitimate sushi. I highly recommend this place if you're in a pinch and just need a quick sushi fix that is excellent. Oh and try the Mayo I hear it's super good according to somebody.................

Erin N.

Yelp
Such an easy place to eat lunch! Working in the city it can be overwhelming trying to think of something healthy or tasty for lunch. Takas is always fresh and always busy so make sure you get in early!

Bronwyn G.

Yelp
Amazing food and cheap to. Great if your trying to save money and still want to eat out

Tiago A.

Yelp
chicken teryacky is good. Many times i had lunch at Taka. good food ,fresh and cheap. good deal

Simon X.

Yelp
I visit this place for work every now and then, and without fail it delivers every time on quality food at a cheap price. If you're hungry grab a large - it'll feed you for the entire afternoon, and if you want to eat a healthier portion grab a small. You pay around $7 for a small and $9 for a large - Taka's blows other food places out of the water with their prices. Honestly, I can't think of any other place that provides a decent meal, at that price. Once you order, the food comes out relatively quick - they are simple and clean dishes - and before you sit down to enjoy your meal, grab one of the four or five sauces that are there - chilli, soy, bbq, and miso I think? Also, unlimited Wasabi plus you can have as much tea as you want. Highly recommend this place, and it's possibly the best value meal in Perth. I know...big statement, but I'm sure some on here will agree. I just finished my Teriyaki Don, and thought I'd write this one down. Btw they also take Paypal - which they never used to do.

Yelp
Looking for a quick bite to eat with children 4,5 & 6 and decided to stop at Taka. Child 4 & 5 raves about this place and is frequented by their friends often. I have to say I was more than disappointed. It is super cheap, I will grant you that, but that is about all it has going for it. The decor is non existent. The walls are filthy and peeling paint or scuff marked with countless shoes. The service is poor and uninspiring. The food comes out so fast that it can't have been cooked properly, which it wasn't, and the taste is watered down. This is a restaurant for back packers and youth with a tight budget. If you need to be filled up with starch and boiled meat then Taka is the place for you! D-. I WONT BE RETURNING BECAUSE ITS NOT FOR ME, BUT ITS STILL HUGELY POPULAR! :)

Radek S.

Yelp
A quick bite. This establishment has been around for as long as I can remember but for some reason I haven't popped in until just recently. I opted for the Chicken Karage Ramen while Susan chose the fresh chicken Udon. My Ramen was okay but I have definitely had better for a similar price point. My chicken was cooked well though and was still nice and crispy on the outside. Susan found the chicken udon to be satisfactory but not outstanding. The turn around time is very quick and there is free Japanese tea provided on site. If I was to describe this place in a few words it would be a Japanese version of Chiliz.

Yelp
I went here for the first time about a week ago, and I was impressed. I walk past this place most days for work, and I always sell the delicious aromas as I stroll past. Firstly it was cheap, to be honest that is kind of what got me in the door. I love Japanese food and I love a bargain! The food is really delicious, I was so impressed that I could get food that good for those prices! Safe to say I have told a lot of people about how delicious this place is, and now I will tell you guys too. It is really tasty!

Jason X.

Yelp
Taka, I'm not sure if it's you or me. But things aren't the same as they used to be. It was so fun being able to hit you up for lunch with the boys, smashing a big bowl of teriyaki whatever and a can of coke for about what I was earning per hour at the time. But things aren't the same. Theres no old guy yelling stuff in japanese in the kitchen anymore. The chicken is slimier than it used to be. Don't get me wrong I can handle a little bit of slime but now you're just talking the mickey. I dunno. I might still go to your Freo one if theres nothing better going at the time. Maybe i'll pop in for a little veg tempura snack if i'm in the mood. But i'll be honest- I think i'm gonna start going elsewhere for my Teriyaki.

Kimberley L.

Yelp
Cheap and classic Japanese food with complimentary green tea! The food comes very quickly and is delicious.

Matt G.

Yelp
Good portion sizes and very tasty dishes. Very efficient during busy lunch periods. If you're hungry and only have less than $10, this place won't disappoint. Better for take away in my opinion as tables can be limited when its busy.

Jennifer E.

Yelp
This place gets four stars for staying power and consistency. 10 years later and you can still order the same thing and it tastes just the same. The place has it pipeline-ready but minus one star for the long wait, even when not dining in. Try the Menu #1 Terikayi Don which is a bowl of rice topped with Taka's special chicken and sauce. The large option comes with miso soup.

Aimy T.

Yelp
Lovely food ! It so cheap at starting price $6 for a meal , quick service simple so delicious! Highly recommend anyone to try this out :) will be returning here soon

Veronica C.

Yelp
This place is great ~ visit there often because of its amazing teriyaki don! Definitely recommend this place as it is so cheap and the food is delicious ~ theres also green tea included so what more could you want ?

Amy C.

Yelp
Taka is delicious! I have been twice in the past month and loved it both times. I've gotten the large tempura prawn and veggies both times and it's only about $10. It's a lot of food as it comes with a bowl of rice and really good miso soup. They also have a huge vat of good, complimentary Japanese tea, which is a nice addition. You order up at the counter and then get your food when your buzzer goes off, and while it is typically crowded the staff does a good job of cleaning tables quickly. Would recommend for anyone looking for good and cheap food in the city!

Tanesh N.

Yelp
Great place to come with a large group of hungry friends. This place is like a food hall as it sure gets busy and a sign that their food gathers a loyal following. Very reasonable and tasty morsels put these guys way up there.

SJ H.

Yelp
Cheap quick and tasty. Exactly what you need when in the city shopping or doing errands! Doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't!

Chris P.

Yelp
Cheap. Noisy . Quick. Good. Fresh. No Table Service. Did I mention cheap.? Great for a noisy quick cheap lunch.that's quite good.

Alex C.

Yelp
This is a Perth institution. It's quick simple JApanese food. For those on a budget there isn't anywhere else I'd go. For less than $10 you can get a great feed everytime- it's place you go when you don't want to go out but can't be bothered cooking.

Pierce W.

Yelp
Food was great, service was fast. Couldn't complain for that price range. Definitely the best place when you are on a budget in Perth cbd. Even when you're not, it's still great!

Josie B.

Yelp
I'm a fan of Taka. They can get extremely busy over the lunch hour, but they churn the orders out fairly quickly. Their tuna and salmon don are good, as are their teriyaki dishes. Their pre-made sushi is fine, but the freshly prepared is much better. Tasty food, reasonable prices. A good all-rounder.

Neal C.

Yelp
Wow, excellent quality at an unreal price (for Perth and surrounding area). Ordered the Katsu Don large size for $7.80, which also comes with free tea and access to soy, barbecue, and spicy chili sauces. Seriously, if you like great Japanese food or simply don't want to pay a lot for food, this place is great.

Albert T.

Yelp
Meals here doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. Food has always been good too. And you don't need to buy drinks cause they have free tea! Beat that.

Marcus J.

Yelp
Food is always good and fast ! yeah sushi is number one !!!

Stefan A.

Yelp
Good gor the price range. I am not a real fan but i will definetly be there if i am saving some money.

Steve G.

Yelp
Great food and a reasonable price. This is hard to find in Perth! Most places want $20-30 a plate. They still think there is a mining boom!! Taka is not fancy and the toilets are not all that clean but this is still a great lunch place!!! There is as much wasabi and chilli sauce as you need.

Nathan S.

Yelp
This is the tastiest and cheapest Japanese you'll find around Perth. Let me say first up, though: if you're looking for a fine dining experience, you won't find it here. Not a whole lot of love has gone into the interiors; it's sterile and it's fantastic for this reason. The focus is on the food and the company (if you happen to have it), there's nothing else keeping you there except for the fact that you won't be leaving with empty pockets. That's right, this place is so cheap! Tuna Salad sushi for $3.50! Large Teriyaki Fish for $7.30! Small mixed Tempura for $6.30! And it's all freshly made! Oh, I do love a good bargain. Takas is also located in Fremantle and on Shafto Lane in the city. It's beeper service, there's a big urn of Chinese tea in the corner (free for the taking) and the tables are wiped just often enough that you're not stewing in other people's filth. What more do you need? Really?

Leigh Z.

Yelp
A total Perth favourite! Taka is always packed to the brim with hungry lunch-goers from work and city slickers. There's plenty of seating though, if you don't mind sharing with strangers and if you're in dire need of some Taka treats, you can just walk the 10 minutes down to the Shafto lane store for the same menu! Taka is notoriously cheap, and they have an efficient pager system to make sure you get your meal as quickly as possible. The food is solid, standard Japanese fare, nothing outstanding, but certainly nothing disgusting. If I were to pick something to gripe about over the food, I would have to say that I have had an unfortunately gristly piece of chicken in my karaage every now and then, but nothing that would stop me from going back. Honestly, I haven't been to Taka for a while, because I used to go so frequently that I almost can't stand it anymore. Great food for a tight budget.

John S.

Yelp
Been eating there for years as they are cheap and food is good. I love the karrage chicken and miso kasu. Stopped going there for coming to 3 months after their inconsistent in their food quality and value. Now, their large serve is no different from small serve, some times even smaller than small serve. their cups are not wash properly either with lipsticks found several time on the cups. I basically stop drinking their tea. I changed to just drinking bubble tea for lunch. At least the quality is standard. May go back and try one day but after stopping to go, I found better value outlets to visit.
