Takutai Square

A pocket of tranquility in an urban city landscape. A fairly large area with water features that seem to attract and delight small children on warm days 😂 Large rock/boulders with etchings also feature in the area and there’s a large grassy spot to relax or even picnic in the warmth of the sunshine. A surprising find amidst the high rise concrete jungle

It's a really nice spot to wander through, or take a seat, or join in the fun if there's music or free food. Lots of eating options.

This slab of greenery outside the Atrium on Takutai attracts a mix of people who lay on scattered red bean bags or sprawl across the lawn from tourists to corporates escaping their cubicles at lunch time. If you don't want the grass stains there are benches closer to Tyler Street. On Saturday mornings the lawn is filled with market goers who have come down to the Farmers markets on Gore Street and will be enjoying their breakfast or brunch. Britomart also holds concerts and other events here so it is worth keeping an eye out on the Britomart website to see what is happening down on the green.

Bean bags are the best, everyone knows this. So when you cross this with downtown Auckland's only public green space its makes for a pretty awesome combo. Informally known 'Takutai Lawn' in the newly updated trendy Britomart Precinct is a favourite lunch time spot among the corporates in the area. I'ts become a pretty common sight to see suits with their cut lunches pull up a pew (or beanbags in this case) and soak up the summer sunshine in their breaks, from time to time impromptu meetings are even held out there if the heat gets too much. Takutai square is a pretty happening place, theres always something going on, especially in the summertime. There's been music gigs held there, every Saturday it holds the City Farmers Market on adjoining Gore Street (one of my local haunts) and a popular addition too has been the open air film screenings.

Man, Britomart really got good. I remember when it first opened and seemed like another excessive addition to a pretty drab area of town. Now, with the shopping precinct and places like Takutai Square, it is fast becoming a destination beyond just a transport centre. Takutai Square has red cushions in it for lounging around in, and most of the time they are all taken by people relaxing and talking with friends. There is a cool piece of artwork - "Scout" which is a constantly changing digital piece on a rectangular totem pole. The last time I was down there they had a dj playing , which served to add to the relaxed vibe of Takutai Square and reinforced the idea that Auckland is fast becoming a city with an urban heart.

Another space that makes me smile and reminisce on how much Auckland has grown up as a city in the last few years. This used to be a run-down bus depot. Today it's fantastic green space surrounded by heritage buildings, and it feels very city-like! The bean bags are the stuff of legend - the perfect place to come and escape the confines of the office and chill in the sun. One of my favourite spots to people watch and take photos - all sorts of interesting geometric compositions on offer with the surrounding buildings, and always a hive of activity. Farmers Market on Saturdays is also worth a look!

Good god Britomart you are sexy. The transformation of this area has seriously improved Auckland, and Takutai Square is a big part of that, literally. This area used to be a pretty crappy, carpark/nothing area, and now It's one of the best places to chill in the city. With a huge range of shops, bars and restaurants forming it's border, there are plenty of reasons to visit and even more to stay. Even if you don't buy anything, it's a perfect place to chill. Come visit during the weekday lunch hours, it is packed with workers enjoying their lunch on the grass, bean bags, or picnic benches. There is often live music or some other event going on, and with the weather as good as it's been, the vibe is one of eternal summer - even on a Monday. It's cool that everyone has a nice place to sit without having to venture too far from work, and with really limited roads, it's surprisingly peaceful.
