We spent two days at Talalla Retreat as "drop-in" guests, and despite many others being there for the full week retreat, we felt genuinely welcomed by the friendly staff.
The hotel is set in a small village, and being there during the off-season meant several local businesses were closed. Consequently, we ate all our meals at the hotel restaurant. While the food was okay (not among the best we had in Sri Lanka), the menu did become a bit repetitive after two days. The curries were too spicy for our taste, and unfortunately, the chef couldn't adjust the spice level on subsequent orders. The jackfruit tacos, however, were quite good.
The property is in a beautiful setting with rooms spread across a large garden. There was some construction work ongoing, but the noise level was thankfully low and not disruptive.
The hotel is located right in front of a beautiful and clean beach. The sea was a bit rough during our stay, but it was still safe for kids to play in the sand and the white water, under supervision. The swimming pool was clean and had a perfect water temperature, though it did lack shade at certain times of the day.
We stayed in a Deluxe Sea View room. The room was clean but quite plain, lacking a comfortable couch or chair inside. Mosquitoes were present, making it hard to relax on the small porch couch at night, but the mosquito net around the bed was effective and kept us safe while sleeping. The AC was efficient and quiet. The open-air bathroom was a definite highlight. The main downside was the queen bed, which was made up of two twin mattresses pushed together, not comfortable, and not what was advertised.
Overall, it's a place I would return to, but in the off-season, I wouldn't recommend staying for more than two days due to the limited dining options outside the hotel.
