8 Incredible Trips Across Canada Run by Indigenous Tour Operators

"To learn about Vancouver’s arboreal past, I joined Talaysay Tours for an insightful walk within Stanley Park, where guides discuss the history, traditions, and beliefs of the Shíshálh and Skwxwú7mesh First Nations who call the Pacific coast home." - Diane Selkirk

Getting to Know Indigenous Peoples in Canada Through Tourism

"In Stanley Park I took a cultural-ambassador-led walk with Talaysay Tours and learned how Indigenous peoples harvested the plants of this temperate rainforest for medicine, food, and technology, along with the history and traditions of the Indigenous people who live here." - Johanna Read Johanna Read Canadian travel writer Johanna Read specializes in responsible tourism — helping travelers make destinations better (or at least not worse) when they visit. I was lucky to have the opportunity to take Talaysay's Taking Trees tour with my team yesterday. What an incredible opportunity it was to learn first hand the Indigenous ways of living, particularly in how they used the land for food and medicine. I found the Talaysay talking trees tour insightful and perspective shifting. Thank you so much for the opportunity! Michelle

The tours from Talasay are so excellent. I took the Love The Land tour with Tay, Talking Trees and Salish Sea tours with Ruby. It's a privilege to learn about all the plants and land and marine life through an indigenous land. I've also appreciated hearing from both indigenous and non-indigenous guides, which really helped me figure out how to respectfully approach this knowledge. An added note is that even my 6 and 10 year old children were engaged with the conversation throughout the tour. I was very pleasantly surprised and so grateful they got to learn to appreciate the ecological system at an early age.

Can’t say enough positive things about my experiences with Talaysay Tours. Took the tours at Stanley Park and Capilano River and learned so many beautiful, resourceful, and sustainable teachings that are truly indispensable - especially for someone who didn’t grow up in BC and wanted to learn more about local Indigenous cultures and ways of living with nature. The tour guides were so knowledgeable - we had our questions answered and our minds blown right open with the abundance that lies outdoors. Each tour will provide you with different gifts - whether it’s their homemade tea, a salmon berry in early summer, or learning which leaves can be used as nature’s toilet paper! Regardless, you will leave the experience feeling fulfilled! Thank you Talaysay!

Absolutely fantastic tour -- one of the best tours I've taken anywhere! We took the Talking Trees tour with Gavin and learned so much about the Indigenous history, culture, and botany of the region. Gavin was extremely knowledgeable and we left the tour with many thoughtful insights about the ways the Indigenous nations have utilized and worked with the land for thousands of years. It was also neat to try the tea sample he brought for us!

Candace and Rebecca gave us a wonderful, insightful tour of Porpoise Bay Provincial Park through the lens of their rich cultural traditions, and ways of living of the coastal indigenous people. We left the area after the tour with a new appreciation of the local natural environment, and the harmonious ways in which the indigenous communities and nature nourished one another for generations. It was a great start to our visit to the area. Thank you Talaysay Tours.

We had the opportunity to take the Talking Totems / Salish Sea and Me tour with Talaysay Tours, and it was a wonderful experience. It was a great way to learn more about Stanley Park and the Coast Salish people, and our guides were knowledgeable and engaging. I also have to commend Talaysay Tours for their exceptional customer service. They handled multiple payment issues, booking changes, physical accommodation needs, and questions with professionalism and care—10/10 customer service! Highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for an insightful and meaningful experience in Stanley Park.

Took the Talking Trees tour and was really blown away by the amount of knowledge shared on a relatively short walk! Our guide was engaging and honest about the information that the local indigenous communities have lost, and the amazing efforts being made to regain and revitalize their cultures.
