Where to Eat in Monterey

"This delightful small inn in Carmel-by-the-Sea has Pacific Ocean views from room balconies and its fireplace-warmed patio. It's right off the main street, which is chock-full of chic shops, galleries, and restaurants. Carmel Beach is just a few blocks from the whitewashed Tally Ho Inn." - Sharon McDonnell

My wife and I completed a three-night stay this past weekend. We were here a year ago and had a very pleasant stay, so we decided to return. Unfortunately, this stay fell well below our expectations.|First, the positive: |Tally Ho is in an excellent location in downtown Carmel. It has covered, protected parking, which may be its best feature (especially if you have golf clubs in your car). The rooms are very spacious, and have decks with ocean views and comfortable seating.|Now, the rest of it: |We were essentially without internet for two of our three days. When I inquired of the individual behind the front desk whether anything was amiss, she replied : "I'm getting excellent internet here in the office." Not much help there. In fact, we never saw anyone but young seat-holders in the office.|Our room was indeed spacious, but the bathroom left MUCH to be desired. We couldn't get the old commode to properly flush, and the shower head badly needed to be replaced. (We are acutely aware of the issues with water shortages on the Monterey Peninsula, but there are shower heads that will compensate for this.|Maybe we just got the worst room in the place (109), which is street-side and really noisy, especially from the garbage trucks, which seem to come EVERY morning.|All of this for $555.00 per night, a price I would happily pay, but most definitely NOT for a room like this. Beware.

Charming small Inn offering beautiful private deck views from suites. Such a bonus to have parking on site. Outdoor patio fireplace created such a relaxing atmosphere. Breakfast was so easy with each room's certificate for historic Inn restaurant + bakery right across street. Our premium oceanview room had a wonderful fireplace, deck furniture + top & bottom shutters to open for the breezes to come thru.|Front staff friendly + helpful, leaving property about 8pm.

My main reasons for booking this hotel was the guaranteed parking in their parking deck under the hotel, the option to get room service from the restaurant next door and the location near downtown. But I found the hotel to be very cosey and I can't wait to go back! When I checked in the attendant walked me to my room, which I though was a lovey thing to do. She then explained that they would have tea and coffee available in the lobby in the morning and brandy in the evening. I even found some fresh fruit in the lobby. My room didn't have an ocean view, but I did have a nice little chair and table outside my room. There was a communal porch that overlooked the ocean and an outdoor fireplace. Such a lovely little hotel.

We went for our 11th anniversary it was a really nice stay! Would definitely recommend it to people! The view from the hotel was awesome! To see the water and sunset!

Great fit out. It was really hard to find accommodation and managed to find this little gem. Our family of four started here. Great service, amenities, parking, and more. Both reception staff were very friendly and helpful. One young lady Nicole and a more elderly gentleman. Not a new fit out but very clean, and comfortable place which I would not hesitate to recommend at all. Thank you!

The hotel was well placed in the city and the room was clean and tidy. The view was okay, its partially blocked by roofs. The rooms are not recently renovated and rather dull and considering the price I would not go back. Also, it said breakfast included but instead they give you a voucher for 15 bucks per person which can be used across the street. What they dont mention is that you need to spend at least 50$ to get a decent breakfast so you will have to pay anyways.|The old man who checked us out was really rude when I tried to explain this.|I recommend you to spend a bit more for something better or rather take a cheaper hotel and just enjoy carmel as the cozy place it is.

We stayed at the Tally Ho on the recommendation of friends. The hotel is a hidden gem! Our room was wonderful. We had a great view of the water, and even though you are a few blocks away, you can hear the waves. The room, with a fireplace and a heated bathroom floor, was ideal. The staff was very friendly, providing some wonderful recommendations. With on-site parking, most everything in Carmel is within walking distance. We will definitely return!

Google
Very helpful front office, large room with nice balcony and view of the ocean. Excellent location for walking into town and down to the beach. Since we booked directly with the hotel , we were given a $25 breakfast certificate . The Tally Ho only has 12 rooms and is quiet.

Yelp
We stayed for a night at the Tally Ho Inn when we spent a night in Carmel on a mini road trip across part of California recently. The service at the front desk was great. The location is excellent. There is parking underneath the inn. Parts of the inn have been renovated (the exterior) but our room and particularly our bathroom had not (tub/shower was not in great shape - cracks). Still, the location and service made this a good place to stay. I wouldn't mind staying again.

Yelp
The property that this hotel occupies is gorgeous to say the least. Epic ocean views with beautiful trees and planter boxes throughout. The room are spacious, and the beds are very comfortable. We loved sitting out on the deck, taking in the sun, and the ocean breeze. Our only complaint that deducted a star was the state of the bathrooms and the odor that comes out of the shower and tub drains. Please fix this issue. We had to shut the bathroom door just to be able to breathe in our room which otherwise reeked due to lack of ventilation in there. If they can update the bathrooms, this place would be 5 stars all the way! Great service, wonderful housekeepers, and very friendly and helpful front desk staff. We look forward to coming back soon!

Yelp
What a great little spot in Carnel by the sea. I was in room 108 with my own private deck and view of the ocean. Room was extra big with a nice bathroom. No cleaning unless requested. I did have to call and ask for more glasses and took my trash to the housekeeper when I saw her nearby but no big problem. Parking is included which is huge in Carmel. GREAT location. You are just steps away from all the fabulous bars and restaurants!

Yelp
We stayed in the king delux room last night, July 3. We paid nearly $500. The carpet has tons of stains, there was one big wet spot next to the bed, the bathroom not very clean (needs a deep cleaning!). In fact, the entire room needs some TLC...great view from the terrace, but the room was a huge disappointment. We grabbed two muffins for breakfast, and they were stale, dry, and probably a week old. Fortunately we also grabbed a couple bananas--which were fine. Coffee was blah. Not at all what we expected for a night away in Carmel. Come on, Tally Ho... step up your game, or close up shop!

Yelp
We loved our stay at the Tally Ho. It was so inviting and we were welcomed back by the happy crew each time entering this magical place. They keep an outdoor fireplace lit which adds to the ambiance along with the view of the ocean.

Yelp
I really liked this place even though we didn't have a view. Tally Ho has a great location, right in downtown, so walking around the shops and restaurants was very convenient. Underground parking makes things even easier. The beach is a short walk away, just 3 or 4 blocks. We chose to stay in a smaller room, Room 102. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was spectacular: spa tub, magnifying mirror, television for viewing while you bathe, full length mirror, nice smelly soaps... There is a cozy patio with fireplace shared by the handful of rooms at this inn. We appreciated the mints and next-day's weather report delivered to our room in the evening. Breakfast is included and is provided at a restaurant across the street. Staff was very friendly and accommodated our unannounced early check-in with no fuss. I'd definitely stay here again.

Yelp
We have been coming to the Tally Ho for 5 years. It used to be one of our favorite places to stay. Sadly this year the service and amenities have bottomed out. We are staying here now for 5 nights and just learned we cannot have our room cleaned until we check out. We can get fresh towels and put our trash out but that's it. We use to get a voucher for breakfast but that is no longer. There is no breakfast and they removed their Friday happy hour. Our room is awful as the room above us you can hear every toilet flush and shower start. Really sad to see this lovely spot go down hill in service and amenities.

Yelp
My absolute go-to when I go to Carmel. I have stayed here several times and the level and quality of service is always exceptional. One of my favorite features are the heated bathroom floors, but there are other great features such as: Spectacular ocean views from your private balconies or decks Complimentary breakfast Complimentary snacks in the evening Complimentary newspapers Beautiful bathrooms/rooms In-room refrigerators you can actually use Peaceful, quiet setting for relaxing Perfect location for walking around town or down to the beach These are just a few of the wonderful things tally ho has to offer. The staff is exceptional and service leaves little to be desired. There is also convenient underground parking on the premises. I would highly recommend a stay here to anyone, especially if you want to be impressed! One downside is they do not allow pets, but this doesn't change my mind about this beautiful inn.

Yelp
Stayed one night for valentines day weekend. It was pricey for one night but it was a very enjoyable stay! What I enjoyed: Balcony (beautiful view) and fireplace in the room Very spacious room Warm bathroom floor Complimentary breakfast buffet Complimentary newspaper Complimentary brandy, coffee and tea in the front office Very close to the main street and beach Will definately recommend Tally Ho inn to anyone visiting Carmel!!

Yelp
Definitely a fan of this place. Lot of things I liked... - The room had a spectacular ocean view. - Small and unique with only 12 rooms. - Underground parking -They had brandy in the evening which was welcome after a walk in the cold. - All rooms had a large flat screen TV. - Nice deep jacuzzi and a small tv in the bathroom to keep you company - The older gentleman who works there was great, very friendly and helpful - Bose sound system - Fireplace and sitting area outside with an ocean view I am going back for sure!! Much better than several of the B&Bs that I have been to Carmel.

Yelp
was We stayed for a few nights during the week. Rooms are big, with funky decoration, a little dated... but at least they have a good beds. My main issue that I needed to work and I was guaranteed that they had a good internet connection. That was not the case, there is no decent connection in the whole hotel. In my room was less than 2mbps. If you have to do a zoom call with several participants, is impossible. The staff at the front desk are useless. For over $500 a night you expect better service, updated rooms and functioning amenities. If you need to work in the internet, do not go there.

Yelp
Our experience wasn't anything like the reviews I read which were all glowing. Perhaps it was due to Covid, but we were underwhelmed by our room, which was the most expensive on the property and only had an ocean view if you managed to peek through the overgrown brush. There was no maid service (perhaps due to Covid again), the only breakfast was pastries, and if the room was upgraded, we didn't see it. It seems greatly in need of redecorating. It was convenient getting into town, and the parking was very convenient. We definitely felt the room was overpriced for what we received.

Yelp
Recently stayed here for a Saturday night. One of the more expensive places that we found to stay, but they had availability on what was a popular weekend (triathlon in nearby Monterey). Very conveniently located one block off Ocean Avenue (main street for shopping), so it's a very easy walk to shops, dining, and 5 mins to the beach. Looks like not all the rooms have an ocean view, but our's did. Wonderful deck to enjoy the weather on as well. It was a large room with a well stocked bathroom. No conditioner though? Huge TV! The outdoor fireplace is a really nice feature, and great for breakfast or happy hour outside. There is parking under the hotel. There shouldn't be an issue finding a spot, but I could see if two cars decided to split one room, they could run out of spots. I hear they are good about finding you parking nearby if they fill up. Service was very personable. It's not a huge hotel, so you do feel special here. Upon checkin, we found they offered a really nice meat/cheese plate and complimentary brandy from 4pm to 6pm. Hey, this expensive room was beginning to pay off. Breakfast was simple (really great OJ); I've had better. Front desk attendant was good about letting us know that the danishes were coming back when they ran out (those were pretty good). Overall, you'll pay top dollar to stay here on the weekend, but this hotel will try it's best to live up to expectations, especially in fancy Carmel.

Yelp
Tally Ho Inn is one of the hidden treasures of Carmel. The rooms have been recently upgraded, the staff and management are very helpful. If you are looking for a 5 star experience Tally Ho Inn is it. Private balconies with wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean. A must stay experience.

Yelp
Great place. We will never stay anywhere else when we go to Carmel. Next to the main street in Carmel but so nice and quiet. Fantastic buffet breakfasts at Il Fornio across the street (included in price on weekends) . Great covered parking. And what a friendly staff. They were above and beyond the call of duty. Easy walk to the beach. And our room had a great deck with views of the ocean. Nice French Roast coffee ready in the morning and throughout the day and there was even de-caff also. Also, it's not a yuppie hipster place. Just a tad old fashioned, which I really appreciated. We stayed at the Best Western motel in Carmel for the last 2 visits .. never again. We will always pay a little more and come here.

Yelp
This place is a good place to go if you can't get a room you like in the Pine Inn, or want to save a little scratch. It's owned by the same people. It's got a good location and vibe, but does lack the grand vibe that the Pine Inn does. The view, if you get an ocean view room, is very nice. They even give you brandy for a nightcap (if you like that kind of thing). The curb appeal isn't super awesome, but once you get inside, the complex, it's actually quite peaceful. I like it.

Yelp
We were on a road trip from southern to northern CA and decided to pick places to stay along the way...a little risky, but paid off on this find for sure!! We had never been to Carmel, yelped hotels in the area and several were sold out as the Open is happening in Pebble Beach this week. We were told about Tally Ho from their sister hotel across the street and soo happy we were! We stayed in a beautiful large room with a fireplace, heated bathroom floors and the best part was the folding door/wall slides completely open to a private patio facing the bay!! Wine waiting for us and Gorgeous views! This location is excellent, walking distance to everything you need. We will definitely be back! Thanks to Ned for make our stay wonderful and being there even when we arrived late in the evening!

Yelp
After 1 sleepless night at the Pine Inn, we were offered a majestic suite at the Tally Ho, and it was worth every penny! Our room was the size of a small apartment with our own deck, a lovely living room with a fireplace, massive marble bathroom with a jacuzzi tub and the coziest king size bed I've slept in. Did I mention there were 3 TVs in the room? I find that a little excessive, but something most Americans would find appealing. We enjoyed two blissful nights here and would definitely stay here again. There are only 12 guest rooms at the Tally Ho, making it extra cozy. There are views to the ocean and an outdoor fireplace with a sitting area for guests to enjoy. A complimentary cheese and Brandy happy hour is offered daily. They also have underground parking which is a novelty in busy Carmel. Just a few blocks from Carmel beach and a central to everything in Carmel, Tally Ho is the perfect place to stay!

Yelp
This is the first review I have done where I would give 20 stars if I could. When I searched the site and looked up information online I was not sure about The Tally Ho...all I can say is that this place is truly amazing. Let me give you a visual that I wish I had had. It is located right in Carmel, on a side street. They have a lot across the street and even under the inn too for parking. When you first walk in, you see through to a view of the ocean. The office is as you enter on the left. The nicest people work here, everyone from front office to the people who lovingly clean your room. You walk down a few steps and you see an outdoor fireplace with a table. The deck also extends out towards the ocean and it is a nice relaxing place to relax. We went with friends and had suite 103 and 104. I highly recommend these rooms. They are identical. You walk through the door and enter a oversized room with a couch and coffee table. There is a king size bed and a HUGE plasma TV on the wall over your fireplace. The bathroom is luxurious with heated tile floors, a massive jacuzzi tub, a large marble shower and a TV on the wall. There is a deck off the back and when you sit out there, you hear the ocean that is just a few blocks away. Don't leave the fireplace on too long, it really heats the room up. You also have windows that open up right under the ceiling for a good air flow. You get a breakfast buffet every day across the street, Monday through Friday at Il Fornio and it is good. On the weekend a continental breakfast is served in the front office. The only problem was that I had really looked forward to using the large jacuzzi tub but there was no hot water coming out. Next time I will be sure it works before I come. I cannot recommend this place enough. You will not be disappointed. It really made for a great vacation. It is as quiet as can be. Great place to decompress.

Yelp
Great Location in Carmel. Rooms are updated with very nice bathrooms--awesome jacuzzi tub and TV/Bose sound machine. Some rooms have lovely decks with comfy chairs/chaises. Old fashioned (good) customer service at the front desk.

Yelp
We spent last Saturday night at the Tally Ho, and really enjoyed it. We hadn't reserved our room, but drove around the village a bit to try and find lodging. The Pine Inn was booked, so they referrred us over to sister hotel, Tally Ho. The desk staff took wonderful care of us, and set us up in a room they thought we'd like best. The room was bigger than my first apartment! Gas fireplace, wet bar, gigantic flat screen TV, jacuzzi tub fabulous private deck with chaises, tables and an ocean view. Chese and cognac at happy hour and morning breakfast (continental with fruit) were a nice touch. We had a fab dinner at Don Giovanni down the street and they gave us 10% off our bill for being Tally Ho guests. Sweet!

CS C.

Yelp
Great bed and breakfast place in Carmel that is centrally located to the shopping and dining area in downtown Carmel. I was pleasantly upgraded to a King Bed room. Huge TV with Jacuzzi tub. I would stay here again for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
This is my go to place to stay when in Carmel! Nice decor, jacuzzi tubs, great location, beautiful views and breakfast in the morning are just a few of the perks when you stay here.

Yelp
Not too bad. I didn't like that my room didn't have black out blinds. I would have loved to sleep in a little.

David M.

Yelp
Positives: Location, the staff and with the right room, the view. We really enjoyed our stay. When we return we will definately stay there again. You may want to ditch the dinner at an overpriced restaurant for a bottle of wine and take out on the deck. Negatives: The rooms could use a little updating but were more than acceptable.

Sarah G.

Yelp
Wonderful little hotel in downtown Carmel. We stayed in room 108 for our anniversary and were blown away by the private deck up high above the trees overlooking the ocean. Arguably the best view in Carmel! The room was spacious and had a nice bathroom as well, and we enjoyed how close it was to the downtown area (walkable). I'd definitely stay here again.
