Taman Sari Tourist Village

A must-visit historical site in Yogyakarta, also known as the Water Castle. We visited around 1pm and the place was packed with locals. It was an incredibly hot day, but the bright sun made the photos look amazing! ​Inside, you'll find several guides; some will offer to take your pictures or lead you to the underground path to mosque. We actually decided to explore the neglected side of the castle on our own instead. It was quite an interesting experience but if you are on a tight schedule, just stick to the main water castle area.

We visited Taman Sari Royal Garden because we were looking for a place that was open that day — it was my second to the last day in Yogyakarta, and unfortunately, the palace itself was closed. I’m glad we ended up here though, because it turned out to be a really unique and memorable experience. It wasn’t too crowded when we went — there were a mix of locals and foreigners, and the atmosphere felt calm and pleasant. The sun was very hot outside, but once you go inside the chambers and passageways of the garden, it becomes surprisingly cool. Each section feels like a hidden corner full of history and charm. What stood out to me most were the many small pathways and exits all around the garden. There seems to be only one main entrance, but several exits lead into nearby residential areas or small alleys that connect to local streets. It really gives you a sense of how this place once functioned as a living, breathing royal space — private, mysterious, and full of life. Even though the structures are old, you can still imagine how stunning it must have been at its peak — with the pools, gardens, and chambers in their full glory. It’s one of those places that lets you step back in time and feel part of Yogyakarta’s royal history. A truly cool and fascinating place to explore — peaceful, historical, and worth the visit.

Tamansari is truly magical. Tamansari, also known as The Water Castle, was once a royal garden for the Sultan of Yogyakarta. Walking through it feels like stepping into a different era. The ancient walls, hidden tunnels, bathing pools, and secret pathways tell stories of royalty, mystery, and quiet elegance. What I love the most is how lush and alive this place feels now. The greenery has grown thicker, the atmosphere feels calmer, and every corner looks like it holds a memory. The architecture blends Javanese, Portuguese, and European influences making it not just beautiful, but culturally rich. Standing here, I felt proud. Proud of how Indonesia preserves its history while allowing it to grow beautifully with time. I truly love being part of Indonesia, its stories, its heritage, and its soul. If you’re ever in Yogyakarta, Tamansari is a must-visit. Not just to take photos, but to feel, to imagine, and to reconnect with the past.

This historic water palace complex, a remnant of the Sultanate, truly exudes a powerful sense of history. The architecture a unique fusion of Javanese, Portuguese, Indian, and Dutch style is captivating and a feast for the eyes.

really interesting piece of history and architecture. i suggest you get a guide so you can know more about the history and so you can also help a local! my guide (noko) toured me around and showed me even the deconstructed and destroyed parts, telling me how it used to be the room, showed where the king would arrive with his boat, how the village that is surrounding the castle used to be all just water.

I visited Taman Sari Tourist Village and found it really interesting to walk around. The old bathing pools and underground passages give you a glimpse of the history and culture of Yogyakarta. The surrounding village is also fun to explore with small shops and local people selling crafts. It is not a huge site but it is unique and worth a visit if you are already near the palace.

A historical place with guides for hire. They don't charge an amount of fee, you get to determine it. Along the tour, I couldn't help but imagine how things were back in those days. We even went to the ruins of the castle hidden among the villagers' houses.
