15 Best Beaches in Sydney | Condé Nast Traveler

"Petite Tamarama—AKA Glamarama—packs quite a punch. This 262-foot-wide tongue of golden sand, slung between two headlands, is an epic surf beach that's backed by a little park. A respite from Bondi's notorious throngs, Tamarama is beloved as a free playground for the beautiful people; Brazilians play beach volleyball, topless European goddesses sunbathe by the shore, and sunburnt backpackers frolic on the grass. You’ll see a few families, but this surf beach isn’t very kid-friendly." - Sophie Davies

Yelp
It's what I would like to call the underdog and hidden on the down low kind of beach that is right next to Bondhi Beach! Beautiful sounds of waves and the scene of the waves, is to have your eyes in awe and gaga all over! Encountered this because I only walked! If I took the bus, I don't think I would have walked next door to see this beach! I got the full experience of Australian beach shores! Reminder to self on playing the sounds of waves when I need meditation or a pause from the noises of life!

Yelp
Tamarama Beach is small and not too crowded Beach. Usually local people are coming here so only one small cafe and vending machine for cold drinks plus surprisingly bending machine for Havaianas flip-flop sandals, too. You will bump into fashion magazines photo shooting here quite often, if you are lucky. Shower, toilet and water fountain are available here.

Yelp
This was my favorite beach along the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. Things to know: -This beach has the cleanest bathroom of all spots along the walk. And it also has private showers. -This is the best beach for surfing because the waves are HUGE. -This probably isn't the best beach for swimming (because the current is strong), but I highly recommend wading (or as my mom likes to say, "bobbing"). -Explore the rock area! Little tidal pools are sprinkled about and if you keep going around the bend, you will find a quiet secluded spot. -I noticed the beach got more crowded in the late afternoon (I went on a Tuesday - I'm assuming they're locals getting out of work?) -I don't think this is technically a nude beach, but there were a lot of lady parts hangin' out. Definitely recommend a longer visit here. It's stunning!

Yelp
Tamarama is a beautiful, small, quiet beach in Sydney's suburbs. Set within a rocky bay, and with a sandy beach and grassy lawn, Tamarama for some reason doesn't seem to attract the same crowds as some of the other nearby beaches. The surfing looked spectacular, although a lot of rocks were lurking under the water's surface so although I'm mot expert, I'd suggest staying away from surfing here unless you know what you're doing and know the area. We also saw some kind of music video being shot here, which speaks volumes about the beauty of the site. Tamarama was my favourite of the Sydney beaches, and I would love to return and spend the day.

Yelp
This has always been a cool little beach. Fun to sit on the beach. Fun to sit on the rocks. Sometimes the ocean is a little more dangerous than meets the eye. The ocean currents here can be powerful - they will suck you out with the retreating water. Many moons ago my friend was sucked out and rescued by a lifesaver. I didn't even notice the whole thing - I was busy talking with a topless girl on the rocks. It's important to have priorities in life. Keep your head on straight.

Yelp
For a tiny little beach, Tamarama has it all going on! "Tama" is very popular with boogie boarders as well as surfers, and as it's nestled below the winding coastline you can get a great view of the wave action from the cliffs above. It's also a place dolphins love to frolic. Peak season for whale and dolphin spotting is May-October but dolphins come and play all year round and love catching waves beside the boogie-boarders- it is a joy to behold! This beach is the "grown-up" of the Eastern Suburbs, with volleyball nets often making an appearance, a lovely 60's surf style café perched on the edge of the beach, and beautiful people effortlessly sprawled around like gprgeous bronzed decor. There's some decent shade around the edges of the beach due to the cliffs but the water is not always crystal-clear, it's quite choppy so there's often little bits of broken up seaweed in the water. But the bathrooms are nicely maintained so you can always rinse off afterwards.

Yelp
Tama Beach or Tamarama Beach is the beach you see on that ad where they are painting the lifeguard house. Yep. Tamarama is a beautiful, rip prone beach with a long width of sand and a rock area that is asking to be explored. Next to Coogee and Bronte, this small beach is not really for swimmers. It's easy to get caught up in the rips and dangerous waves. If you go to far out, you may be in trouble. Although this is the case, Tama is popular with surfers FOR it's waves. A nice big rock area shelters visitors and boasts cool mini rock pools and homes for sea creatures. Here, you can get a good view of the beach and explore a little further.

Yelp
Tamarama beach is where the beautiful people frolick. Between the dumper waves and the gorgeous, bronzed bodies which line the beach Tamarama is a beach which takes guts. The lifesavers here work hard, this beach is notorious for its rips and is closed a lot due to dangerous tides. On a summers day you feel sorry for them as they repeatedly tell swimmers to stay between the tiny flagged area and venture out to save a few embarrassed swimmers. Make no mistakes, Tamarama is the cool beach to Bronte's family friendly special and Bondi's tourist party. Filled with uber cool locals and trendy travellers it's where the cool kids go to soak up rays and dive under the massive waves. Sheltered from the wind this is a great beach to laze about and read a book or eavesdrop on the fabulous people's conversations. Testimony to its cool status is there beach volleyball court that is set-up at the back of the beach. There's also a good park area with bbqs and tables, a toilet block and a lovely cafe.

Yelp
This is a fantastic small beach just east of Bondi. It is a little exclusive, you often see the film stars here. It is a small bay so there are trenches and currents, unlike Bondi. It is very tranquil, it's so interesting how you can actually sit on the busy Tamarama Beach with a book in the midst of Summer and not be phased by number one being half clothed in public and number two having a large number of strangers in close proximity with you. It truly is society coming together on the edge of life and it is a beautiful experience. Especially at Christmas, when there are many people who may be travelling and not have anyone to celebrate Christmas with also doing the same thing, enjoying Australia for everything that it has to offer. There is a mind boggling view from the South Eastern Coastal walk from Bondi to Tamarama - please take you camera, many beautiful shots to be had and it is very refreshing.

Yelp
I do enjoy a visit to Tamarama. It does get pretty busy, but not nearly as much as Bondi just down the road. It's very narrow, but quite deep so there's actually quite a bit of space. If you're doing the Sculptures By The Sea, then this is where the art ends. Otherwise, this is a nice little beach to check out, and if you're into your boogie boarding, then you'll have plenty of friends here! There's a few surfers here too of course, as the waves can get pretty big. It can be a little bit awkward to park around here, as you have to ride your luck in getting a spot next to the stairs down to the beach, or go hunting for a back street spot.
