I had high expectations for Tamarind Springs, having checked out their website and heard about their several awards. Naturally, I chose to dine here for a special occasion with my girlfriend. The journey here only raised those expectations, as we cruised through the lush greenery of Taman Tun Abdul Razak and breathed the crisp, misty evening air on the way to the restaurant.
The entryway is small and only distinguished by its bright red paint, so if you don't have an electronic navigation program guiding you, watch out for that, as well as the signs directing you to the carpark next to it. The parking lot is quite small, which is not a big problem as they have attendants to guide you into the available spots, but I didn't like the way the loose rocks on the ground turned my car into a mini roller coaster ride on the way in. It made the mood tangibly less romantic.
The entryway is a great spot to take photos, so don't miss it! Past the entryway is a gorgeous long walk paved by small bricks and lit on either side by candlelight. A romantic experience and more excellent photo ops. Full marks for ambiance!
I had made a reservation, so we were promptly shown to our table on arriving at the dining area. We were seated in the smoking area as the non-smoking area was fully booked, and I have to commend the staff for taking pains to seat us at the edge so we were not affected.
Everything so far was sweet but unfortunately, this is where things take a sour turn, as we were soon set upon by a pushy waiter who tried to convince us to order the most expensive items on the menu. The food is all Asian-inspired, with origins like Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. We ordered a sour chicken soup which was excellent, and a papaya salad with dried beef which, sadly, was not.
Overall, it is to the credit of the design team behind Tamarind Springs that the ambiance of the place makes up for its mediocre food and worse service. I may give it a second chance, but not anytime soon.
