15 Best Bars in Puerto Rico | Condé Nast Traveler

"Tamboo is the quintessential Puerto Rican beach bar: perched on the sand with sweeping views over a gorgeous surf beach in Rincón. Vibes are breezy and low-key in the daytime and buzzier at night, when it morphs into an unofficial dance club. There are lots of refreshing tropical cocktails like the Sunsetrita, a watermelon- and peach-infused margarita, and the Passionista, a mix of vodka, passionfruit, and grapefruit, with a splash of Sprite. And the food menu coming off the grill is extensive and seafood heavy, befitting a spot on the beach." - Kris Fordham

Google
Restaurant service was excellent. Nice and attentive. The view is nice. Good location. No protection from bugs flying into your food. Not a fan of straight ground beef on a leaf. The fish and chips was fine. Nothing extraordinary. The dessert was really delicious. Overall, an ok meal but overpriced - like $65. No free bread for the table or water. It may be an option for drinks but I'll be exploring local authentic eateries in the future.

Google
I had an absolutely spectacular experience at Tamboo Seaside Hotel. The location is stunning, right by the ocean, with a warm and vibrant ambiance that makes you feel both relaxed and energized. The highlight of my visit was the excellent service—Rodney, our server, was outstanding. He was attentive, friendly, and made sure everything we needed was taken care of with genuine care. The food and drinks were also exceptional—delicious, fresh, and beautifully presented, making the whole dining experience unforgettable. If you’re looking for great hospitality, amazing food and drinks, and a beautiful seaside atmosphere, Tamboo is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

Google
Great food - freshest mahi mahi!! Server was delightful, piña coladas were delicious, and the view? Spectacular. We didn’t stay here - just stopped in for a bite and it was well worth it.

Google
Tamboo had a variety of food and everything tasted delicious! I was traveling with a large group, the staff didn't seem overwhelmed and was very accommodating. The restaurant has a cool atmosphere and overlooks the beach

Google
We didn't stay here but we ate at the restaurant. Everything was perfect. The service and location was great. The drinks and the food were delicious. The atmosphere was upbeat and inviting. If we ever return to the area, we will definitely be returning to Tamboo!

Let first disclose that I’ve been here many times and it’s a restaurant I frequently stop at and overall have had good experiences. When I have friends and family and taking them sightseeing I always use the walkway on the side of the restaurant to go see the beach, I don’t always go inside Tamboo. However, on Thursday August 21st at approximately 12:30pm I was taking a group of my family on a sightseeing tour in Rincon and while walking past the side entrance to Tamboo a young woman (working as hostess/server) was just so pleasant and welcoming that it caught me by surprise (mine you I’ve taken the same walk in the past with hostesses there but no welcoming feeling). The engagement with our group was contiguous and welcoming decided to go in for an early drink. All the drinks were really good but for those who ordered the sangria it was in their opinion the best they had while in PR. Great experience and then only to find out that the hostess is a member of the family that owns the business. I told her to package that enthusiasm for the rest of the staff.

Google
We did not stay in the hotel, we ate dinner in their restaurant. I'm glad we chose to eat here because the whole experience was excellent. A near perfect meal. It has a beautiful location and atmosphere. The service was tremendous. The menu was filled with creative dishes that came out plated beautifully. Everything we ate was fresh and delicious. Absolutely loved this place!

Yelp
This is a great spot for drinks and food. Services are great and the view is unbeatable!! Highly recommended. This place has leafy vegetables (besides root vegetables). And if you like spicy, try their hot sauce. We loved every dish we tried.

Yelp
I came here because my friend was recommended this place by someone else. I loved this place it was probably one of the best fish sandwiches, I have ver had. The fish was cooked perfectly flaky but not overly crunchy. It was seasoned really well and a nice size. The beer, which I had was also delicious. I enjoyed this place very much; the service was great and the view was amazing. The ingredients in the sandwich were measured well to each other. I hate when a sandwich is not constructed properly but this sandwich was everything fit in the buns. The beer was so delicious but unfortunately I couldn't find it bring it home. We also ordered appetizers and it was good. I also liked the tuna tartare which was really fresh and delicious. I enjoyed this meal and recommend this place as a must stop when you are in the area.

Yelp

Yelp
Always a great experience at Tamboo. Beautiful sunset views, the service is amazing and the food is some of the best in Puerto Rico! We come here all the time. And they never disappoint. When in Rincon Puerto Rico stop by and enjoy!!

Yelp
Good Service, good drinks and great food. We hade the vegetable tower as a starter. Good! Pina Colada was tasty and the Island Mojito was perfect. Stuffed red bell pepper with skirt steak, rice and cheese was excellent. Chicken sandwich with cilantro pesto was good too. The view can't be beat! We're heading back tonight.

Yelp
If you're in Rincón, specifically near Sandy Beach, you absolutely have to stop at Tamboo. The absolute highlight of this place is the picturesque beach deck seating. Seriously, it's the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the water--the vibe is incredible, and it truly makes you feel like you're on a proper island getaway. My group enjoyed some delicious cocktails--they know how to mix a drink here! The food menu is also fantastic. I have to give a special shout-out to the skirt steak; it was perfectly cooked, flavorful, and easily one of the best I've had in a while. The only tiny piece of advice is to be prepared for the limited parking. It's just that small-town, island-life factor, so plan to get there a little early or be ready for a short walk. It's a minor inconvenience, though, and definitely not enough to keep me from coming back again and again. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Absolutely loved this restaurant. From the views to the food to the service, everything was fantastic. My steak was cooked perfectly, and the cilantro butter was out of this world. It complemented the steak so well. My friend really enjoyed her veggie balls too. My only complaint was that my food was just a little cold. I'd return in a heartbeat!
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
Service was good, drinks were great. Right on the water offering perfect view for sunset. The fish I got was just down right awful. From the appearance of the fish you could tell how dry and rubbery it was. I have no idea why serving this to a customer would be acceptable. It was supposed to come with a garlic and white wine sauce however that was also flavorless. Super disappointing for a very popular restaurant. I guess they were rushing to close being that we were the last table taken. I couldn't even get a different dish because the kitchen closed right after we were served. They have a window to the kitchen where you can see dishes being prepared which was nice. Watching them clean the entire kitchen after serving me a dish like that was sad LOL. On the plus my partner got a steak cooked to perfect temperature and was very good.

Yelp
A beautiful space right on the water. Our group of five was seated right away and our server Nicole was wonderful. The yellowfin and mahi mahi were the fresh catch of the day and the yellowfin tacos were the best I've ever had.

Yelp
Went twice in week Great view Very chill Ceviche and lettuce wraps Service was very good

Yelp

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a Thursday and it was not crowded. Covered patio seating with a view of Sandy beach. We ordered tuna tartare, ceviche, and a burger. The tuna had a nice Asian flavor. The ceviche had a citrus flavor--not like Mexican ceviche. The burger was fine. Server was nice. Average prices, but menu had a variety of items.

Yelp
Rating is Zero Stars for the experience described below. I have no general rating. Rating for service/seating only: NO STARS (Never got in thus have no info on what happens if you do. But...) Experience: Knew they don't take reservations. Showed up on Sun night 1/21/25 @ 8 pm seeking dinner for 2. Told 40 minute wait for bar seating, then wait there for table to open up. Said no thanks. Left. Called Mon 1/22/25 @ 12 noon when they open. Asked if we could expect a seat for dinner @ 6:30 pm. Q? How many. Answer from me: 2. She replied, no problem; you'll be able to get a table for 2 then. Arrive @ 7:00 pm(1/2 hr late). Told: I'm sorry there is a FOUR HOUR wait for a table and because the kitchen is so backed up it will be longer for food! I'm upset. Discussion ensues. We leave. Suggestion - be advised.

Yelp
The food was very good, cocktails were spot on, the view is one of the best I've ever seen. We really want to love this place. so why only three stars? My entire party agreed the staff cost them 2 stars. The staff is VERY controlling about seating. Obviously due to the ocean side seats that everyone wants. I believe the problem stems from the junior staff and lack of communication skills. Although the restaurant was mostly empty at 2pm, they were snappy and rude when we moved to a table with a beach view even though the hostess told us to snag one and then let her know. We did just that and a) the server misunderstood my wife's attempt to help clean the new table and snapped at her then b) we had frankly terrible service for the rest of our stay. What they didn't care about was the fact that it was our Canadian friends 57th birthday, and he'd NEVER celebrated a birthday by the ocean. We were investigating room rates and seriously making Tamboo a regular destination. That is no longer a consideration. Tamboo, your rude and inexperienced staff are costing you $$$$

Yelp
Amazing food and 5 star service right on the Ocean. Fresh seafood, sandwiches and great drinks. A wonderful experience.

Yelp
One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. The food was excessively salty and lacked color. I ordered the chicken with root mash, which arrived cold, lumpy, and tasteless. The views and ambiance of the location are stunning, but you should definitely avoid the food offerings. My friend had the beans and steak/rice, which were dreadful straight from the can and packed with salt. For such an overpriced restaurant, the food quality is truly lacking. I'll never be returning.

Yelp
Ate at Tamboo twice! The food was excellent and the servers were helpful and so pleasant! Sunset view is spectacular over Sandy Beach...

Yelp
Right on the beach in Rincon. Has rooms to rent. The restaurant was great. Service was great. Fish tacos was delicious! Cold beers. Can not wait to go back.

David R.

Yelp
Terrible experience. Food was sub par. Portions were very small and bad quality. Complaints fell on deaf ears. Casa Islena down the road makes this place look like a bad joke. Big Kahuna burgers near by are fantastic - and the people are charming.
google avatar

Mary B.

Yelp
Loved the atmosphere, live music, great food, and friendly service. They were knowledgeable about gluten free options and the food was delicious.

Carolina F.

Yelp
food was very fresh and flavorful, great selection of loca, authentic favorites. The sunsets and the vibes on the beachfront terrace are incredible! Drinks were great, service was friendly, timely, and very helpful with suggestions! would definitely return, and recommend to anyone visiting Rincon!

Yelp
I had fish n fries & my wife had the yellow fin tuna seared. Excellent excellent this was my second experience. My fish was Mahi-Mahi battered, two large fillets. Dessert I got coconut bread pudding = no complaints by me lol. My first day I had the fish burger. Also Mahi-Mahi. Also outstanding

Yelp
What a beautiful view, but that's about all I can say for a positive here. We arrived just as they opened. They apparently have a 90 minute limit on table time..... Well, we've been here 80 minutes now, and our food hasn't arrived. Other tables have turned over in this time, oddly, but no sign of ours. When I asked the waitress, she told us she'd put it in, and it should be out soon..... it was 1:15 after we sat down before food appeared. Kind of wanted to have lunch here, but it almost took until dinner time. Hey, I know, it's beach day and relax and all that, but I wanted to actually spend some time at the beach, not waiting on really slow service. Even the drink service was fairly slow. Appetizer was okay, but I can't recommend this place based on the wait. Food arrived. It is just okay.... snarky comment from waitress didn't help though. The wahoo was a bit overcooked. Mahi sandwich was drowning in sauce. Without the wait, 3-4 stars... but this service.
google avatar

Kelsey A.

Yelp
Great spot! Suggestion: come before the sun sets to get the full view of the ocean, beach, and surfers. The drinks were mediocre but that was the only disappointment. The staff was above and beyond friendly, and extra great with kids. The ceviche was standard, the veggie balls were great, and the plantain baskets were excellent. The mahi mahi was to die for- perfectly cooked and served.

Katrina H.

Yelp
Don't even waste your time. We waited in the lounge for an hour then waited at the table for almost an hour for our food that was ordered AT THE LOUNGE. We left waiting for our food. Never in my life have I ever done this but I was beyond fed up with this place. Then we ask for the manager and she is entirely unapologetic for the poor service and took the money gladly. Disgusting. Never would I ever recommend this place to anyone visiting. There are a lot better things I could spend my time waiting for than a garbage restaurant.

Yelp
Omg. THE FOOD, THE VIEW.. IT WAS EVERYTHING. Super good service we go seated by a nice young lady at the host area. And got a nice view on the ocean. The server took a little bit to get to us but it was very BUSY. She was very attentive after I will say! The food came out pretty quickly. The prices made sense when you think of where you were at. We ate a little and decided to take it back to our rental home and ate it on our balcony. I would definitely go back. Gracias por su servicio y la comida! Todo estuvo espectacular
google avatar

Yelp
Tamboo on a Friday night was a perfect way to start our vacation in Rincon. Service was timely, beverages were cold and the view was priceless. We came for the view and stayed for the people and food. Made a return visit for drinks on their rooftop deck two days later.
google avatar

Yelp
Great setting for ocean views and cocktails. The food is AOK. Service is friendly and efficient. We loved the wine choices and cocktails. Our servers on the two occasions we visited were super sweet and helpful.

Yelp
Wow! What a fantastic date spot. After trying out other over-hyped restaurants (cough, Eclipse, cough) this one REALLY shocked us. Firstly, it's gorgeous. There's plenty of street parking, but if your out of luck try the public beach parking. You walk in along the side of the building. Beautifully lit up trees lead you to the back of the building, a deck where the restaurant sits. We ordered an appetizer, plantain baskets filled with pulled pork. Man did it set the tone for the rest of the meal. Best experience I've had with plantain, hands down. So delicious, and the sauce is incredible. You MUST (!!!) order these. For my meal I decided to try Moris Ramen with a tuna fillet. I thought it'd be interesting, given I just spent a few weeks in Japan. The noodles are thin and stringy, untextured unlike traditional ramen. This Caribbean spin on the Japanese classic is a must-try. The cilantro flavored pork broth was phenomenal. The added veggies were tasty, and the tuna was seasoned and cooked so deliciously. The serving was large, leaving us too full for dessert. Drinks were CRAZY strong, but still sip-able. The views from the dining deck are gorgeous, panoramic beach views. This place has all good vibes. Waitress was also fantastic. PRO TIP: There are stairs on the side that lead down to the beach for a perfect sunset walk post dinner.

Rob R.

Yelp
Awesome little place overviewing sandy beach! Assorted appetizers were all very good. They are fried however not denwhxed in oil at all. Lettuce wraps also were good.

Sera C.

Yelp
I have nothing but amazing things to say about this place. It was a short walk from our rental, the vibe was fantastic and the food was delicious. The staff was so kind and accommodating. The view....the view was everything...
google avatar

Christine E.

Yelp
The food and drinks here are really fresh and delicious. Being right on the beach doesn't hurt either. We stayed in an Airbnb really close by so we were able to walk here for dinner. The staff are friendly and helpful as well.
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
We sat with a great view of the beach/ocean and our server Lily was so kind and helpful. I loved that this was just a walk down the beach from where we were staying (on Sandy Beach). My husband and I had fish tacos at least once a day while we stayed in Rincon and Tamboo's were good.
google avatar

Michelle H.

Yelp
Amazing setting. Come for sunset!!! The pina drink with patron & coconut - the best! And the tender ribs, with the generous serving of rice & beans. Yum.
google avatar

Murlat J.

Yelp
Food service and atmosphere spot on! From the moment we entered till the moment we left we received excellent service!
google avatar

Chris N.

Yelp
If there was a Zero star provided here I would totally rated just that. Staff was friendly except for the hostess with piercings and tattoos. Food was bland and was not good at all. One of the dishes we ordered was pechuga and mashed potato tasted like boxed mashed potato and the chicken was bland with no flavor. We were hungry and it was getting late and took a few bites and I had wanted to let the hostess know since she was closer to us. Told her what happened and she said that we ate half of it and so if they would remake it, it'll still be the same. I asked if they would make the food with little more flavor and instead of mashed potatoes if we could substitute for rice instead. She looked annoyed and said she would ask my friend for what happened instead and see what she wanted to do since it was the dish my friend ordered. The way she rushed to our table to ask her as though she didn't believe me when I was honest with my opinion. My friend had said the same that it was dry and she really tried to force herself eating it however it was tasteless and dry. Our bill came out with double charge for the same dish. I Asked our waiter what happened and he said he'd go and get the manager. The same hostess came back and with her snarling face and said she "told" us that if to remake the food, she'd have to charge us again because my friend "ate half of the food". Again, at no point during our convo she once mentioned it as I told her so. And if she did mention it, I would be gladly to pay it with no problem instead this was clearly a surprise. She then repeatedly told us again the same thing and was being argumentative. At that point it was getting late and we were too tired and felt that there was no point of arguing with her when clearly she was very condescending and treating us like criminal and had absolutely no manners nor respect. She then said the best she could do was to take off only 10% which was $9.08 and walked away. This was the worst experience and service and I do not recommend this place. Management reflects on the establishment. Also I know good food and services when I see it and this was not it. I still tipped their waiters as it was no fault of their own but their manager aka hostess. Again, if there was a zero star, I would totally rated it as that.

Yelp
Great food, great view, lots of options of drinks and great service! Highly recommended!!! Def wanna come back :)

Yelp
Great beach front location. Definitely recommend the pulled pork plantain basket. It was delicious.

Yelp
Tamboo has been around over two decades and right next to the beach and staff was A+, our server Maria (I believed since it was windy and hard to hear). The tacos, mahi-mahi was very fresh and canastas de platanos-rolled crispy plantains filed with "pulled pork"..tender with bursting flavors dusted with feta cheese. Since being a tourists we asked what's there's to do, our waitress and her friend was kind enough to write downs a few things and gave us a local magazine for guidance. They went above and beyond with their hospitality skills.
google avatar

Ellieana L.

Yelp
This restaurant's view is absolutely stunning. Recommended to come and eat just as the sun is setting. The restaurant sits on the beach and you have the most spectacular view as you are eating. Our server Lilly was super attentive throughout our entire meal. Food was so delicious and they provided great sized portions.
google avatar

Yelp
a great spot to have a lunch casual dinner. Night time fun. Tamboo is on sandy beach and a safe area to relax and have some fun.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was delicious, service was great, servers and staff are very friendly and bilingual. Perfect for a sunset dinner on the beach.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is right on the beach, they also have a hotel. I visited the beach and had drinks and appetizers. Buffalo wings and calamari, both were tasty. I like the list of speciality drinks here. I was able to try 2 and they were both good. Sunsetrita and La Isla Verde. Very refreshing. I'm thinking about making these at home now that I know the ingredients. It was lunch time when I arrived and the chef had just brought out today's specials to show the customers. I was able to snap pics of them. Didn't try it but it looked good. Salmon Cakes w a poached egg and vegetables. In comparison to other places in the área, this one seemed a little pricier and they charged 3 different taxes to my bill. So 2 sodas, 2 drinks and 2 appetizers it came to about 60 dollars.
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
This place was awesome! The service was great, the food options solid and the view/beach access exceptional!! Highly recommend for anyone in the area!!

Jae H.

Yelp
What a great place to sit outside while enjoying delicious food with a awesome beach view. From the appetizers to the entrees, they did not disappoint. Good drinks and local beer. We ordered pulled pork mofongo cups, ceviche, borinque plate, sirloin steaks, ribs, mahi tacos, chicken sandwiches and all I mean all was very good. We loved their house made hot sauce so much we bought a bottle to bring home. Our waitress was Patricia. She was so cool and easy to speak to. She made everyone feel comfortable and welcomed. She asked which language we preferred being that not everyone in our group was Spanish. Very professional and super knowledgeable. This is definitely I place I would come back to and recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Drinks and vibe are great. Cant beat being on the beach at a restaurant. Catch of the day was a little bland. Just needs that chefs love!
google avatar

Jenna M.

Yelp
We stayed nearby the restaurant at Sandy Beach and decided to have dinner here our first night because it was so close and we were hangry after traveling. It ended up being one of our favorite restaurants in the area during our week stay and the service was great! We loved it so much, we came back for dinner on our last night. I order the same thing again, fish tacos and tamboo salad. The fish was french catch of the day (mahi mahi) and the salad was light and refreshing. My husband had a burger with plantains as the side the first time. He said the burger was great but ordered the fish and chips for something different the second time. We liked the plantains so much we requested them as an appetizer. For dessert we had the coconut bread pudding. Absolutely delicious!! Must come before sunset to get a great view of the ocean. The waves were HUGE, we were in awe. If you sit upstairs after dark, they have little solar table lights which is very intimate and relaxing listening to the waves. Will be back on a future visit.

Sara Z.

Yelp
I came here for a birthday mojito and I was very disappointed. We were seated quickly and our order was taken quickly, but the service dropped off after that. We waited about 90 minutes for our entrées after the appetizer. Our server did not walk by at all to check in on us or give us any updates about our wait time. I noticed this was the case for the other tables too. Once arrived, the food was not worth the wait. It was fine but nothing special. Oh and the mojito was good, but if I went back, that's the only thing I'd get and I'd sit at the bar.
google avatar

Kali L.

Yelp
Wait staff is great, professional, courteous. Food is mostly fresh. You know when you get that stinky fish that it's not fresh. If you sit at the bar get ready to get robbed and bullied by the manager and bartender. It's a gamble but good for people watching.
