stayed at Tanjore Hi Hotel with a few friends during the first week of June, and we were genuinely impressed. This place isn’t your typical hotel — it’s a beautifully restored heritage building with a fascinating past.
Originally built in the 1920s by a local merchant family, the house has a rich history. It’s said to have hosted K. Kamaraj (former CM of Tamil Nadu) and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar back in the day. Later on, it even served as a girls’ hostel before the current owners took it over and gave it a whole new life.
They’ve done a fantastic job restoring it — keeping the original charm intact while adding tasteful touches with the help of designers and consultants. The place has a quiet, classy vibe. The walls are filled with amazing black-and-white photographs by Frédéric Delangle, a French photographer, which gives the place an artsy, modern twist.
Rooms are cozy and clean, with a lot of character — don’t expect standard hotel-room vibes here. The staff were super helpful and friendly, and the location is perfect, just a short walk or drive from Brihadeeswarar Temple and other key spots around Thanjavur.
If you’re into history, architecture, or just like staying somewhere with a story to tell, this is a great pick. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Thanjavur.
