Katori Hall’s Grub Street Diet

"We ordered noodles from Tampopo Ramen—Ramune soda, curry rice, shoyu ramen and the Enter the Dragon ramen with a habanero spicy-miso broth—and eat there all the time (about once a week) because my kids will devour noodles." - Chris Crowley

For non frequent ramen eaters, this will suffice. For seasoned ramen eaters, look else where. Wife and I are frequent ramen eaters and we wanted to give this place a try since we were in the area. The pork belly buns were just pulled pork with no additional flavoring. The pork itself had a strong pork flavor which can be off putting for some that expect actual pork belly. The sushi was just okay, it had a nice crunch to it, but I would compare it to a step above bought sushi which isn't saying much. Finally, the ramen was really subpar. The tonkotsu broth was really just the broth of the same pulled pork served with the pork "belly" buns. The broth was extremely "porky" and lacked any sort of umami flavor. The egg was not marinated at all an was just a plain egg. The pork pieces were just that, pieces of pork that were likely the same cut of the pulled pork. It was definitely not pork chashu one would expect although to their credit, the menu merely says pork. The overall high review rating stems mainly from the excellent customer service.

Google
The tonkatsu ramen had the worst chashu that I've ever been served, by a wide margin; if you can even put a slab of boiled pork in the same category as chashu. I think the picture speaks for itself. The rest of the tonkatsu was tolerable, despite a mildly stale aftertaste. Gyoza was very good. Good service.

Google
My favorite ramen spot in the area. The owner is really nice. Got an appetizer, ramen, and soda for $30. They have lunch and dinner specials as well. Good small dine in vibes, and they have a drive through window for take out!

Google
Had the spicy Dan Dan ramen. Wish it was spicier but that’s my personal choice. Niji tempura was a great app.

Jessi L.

Google
Service was good, my friend had a sushi roll she liked. IMO the pho didn’t have flavor aside from fat. I have had pho many times other places, but this is the first time I got it and that’s all I tasted. This might be how it is supposed to taste, but it is not my preference. I miss pho king in waukesha.

My family loves getting takeout from Tanpopo. My kids could eat their ramen every day, and I love their sushi! We had a delivery get switched from them tonight (well, from the delivery service, not the restaurant) and Tanpopo went above and beyond to make sure we got our correct food with a little extra to make up for the hassle too. Really appreciate them.

Google
Absolutely LOVE this place. The food is AMAZING and the staff are so great. We live in Illinois and started coming here when I wanted to treat my anime loving husband to true Ramen from scratch. They did not disappoint! We liked it so much, we make a point of visiting on special occasions. And now it's a family thing because our kids love their food too. The food is always made fresh and authentic.

Google
Celebrated a birthday here and it was an Amazing place! Very kind, attentive owner and workers! The food was amazing and we loved everything we ordered. Will definitely be returning. Thank you!!! We loved everything but our favorites were curry fried rice with chicken & shrimp. We tried different kinds of sushi and all were great! The spicy miso ramen was our favorite!!!

Yelp
- unsavory food, ok service, cute interior - reservation not made, but recommended - would not come back for ramen Went here on a recommendation, and the sushi was good, but the ramen was quite underwhelming. I had gotten the Tonkotsu Ramen and appreciated all the toppings that were included, but the soup base did not meet my expectations. The broth was both watery and salty, leaving the flavor a bit all over and like it was made through shortcuts. While the variety in toppings was appreciated, a portion of maybe pork tenderloin was given instead of the pork belly that was described. While a filling portion was served, flavor-wise, not my favorite. My pook had gotten the Shrimp Tempura Roll. This roll had large individual pieces and a nice piece of tempura inside. The sauce on top was nice and overall, this standard roll was good. I did not enjoy my ramen, but the roll my girlfriend got was good. The restaurant had a cute interior, but between the short staff rushing to serve all the customers and the sticky table, I did not completely enjoy our visit here. I have heard other things about their other menu items, so while I would not go back for their ramen, maybe another entree is more appetizing.

Yelp
The one star is for the friendly host and waitress. They were great and service was fast. But as fas as the food, it was bad. Really bad. Our first time stopping by. We went as a party of 6 and nobody could finish their dinner, unforunately. Ramen noodles tasted like eggs. My daughter said it first, I tried to set an example and kept eating my ramen.. but neither my husband or I could keep eating it. It tasted old and gamey. I ordered cooked maki rolls, too and even that tasted old and not fresh. The crab tasted fishy and rubbery. My husband even said to leave and not finish the food, that we'd get sick. Sure enough, I did. I knew the quality wasn't good... as soon as we left, my tummy started hurting. Yep... I got sick eating here. Even the steamed rice was dry. On a positive note, my diet coke was good. About the only thing I'd recommend there.

Yelp
We were really looking forward to trying a meal here and some of the reviews from fellow reviewer friends got us excited. The service and ambiance were great, with one of the loveliest sunroom spots for a meal. However, the food fell short. I got the chicken ramen and the bowl above in the picture was the spicy dandan ramen, which seemed like fair meals to get since we were at a ramen spot. Unfortunately within the first bite realized how there was just too much noodle than meat and how the flavor in the broth had no depth. It missed the mark on the spice. It felt like we had two bowls of instant ramen :( I'm sure we could've had a better food experience with other bites off the menu, but unfortunately our first time here and trying what we thought were signature dishes stomped the excitement we had for this place. It's a great place to eat for the ambiance and a quick meal with no expectations of a hearty broth. However, not sure if I would've driven out of my way to try again! The people that work here are very sweet though and the sunroom side of the restaurant is such a beautiful addition making this place worth giving another shot.

Yelp
On the hunt to find best ramen in MKE. This is first place I tried and was sadly dissatisfied. It's not true tonkatsu broth and ramen and had no umami at all. Not even as flavorful as instant ramen..... so if you're looking for ramen that's a 2/5...The takoyaki appetizer was pretty good though. While I wouldn't get their ramen they had pho and sushi as well that I would consider.
google avatar

Rich S.

Yelp
Cozy environment and nice location. I would have like to have more flavor in my ramen, however. It wasn't as traditional of ramen as I was expecting but it did hit the spot for a local place. The service was responsive and kept our soda and tea topped off and even packed up our food to go.

Yelp
My absolute FAVORITE ramen place. The gyoza is super yummy and the pork belly buns i cannot go without! The tonkotsu ramen is my choice, spicy dandan if i want a little kick! I always get a little treat with my takeout orders too and i think its sweet. Service is absolutely amazing and the atmosphere is cozy. I feel taken care of everytime i come here!
google avatar

Puddy M.

Yelp
Outside was a little deceiving. I think they took over a building. Inside was nice though. Service was quick and friendly. We ordered sushi which was pretty good. They do have a variety of items like ramen, pho, Korean.

Yelp
I had Japanese curry for the first time ever at a Japanese supermarket in Illinois a few months ago and have been craving it ever since. Upon searching the Milwaukee area for a place that has Japanese curry on the menu, I stumbled across this place. Decided to finally give it a try yesterday and I sure wish I had come here sooner! The curry here is AMAZING! I could eat it all day, every day. My fiancé ordered tonkotsu ramen which he also enjoyed. We ate our meals so fast, we did not get any pictures to share. HOWEVER, I do have a picture of an adorable keychain I bought after our meal. They have some of these hanging from the light fixtures throughout the restaurant. :) Highly recommend this place if you're looking for some great Japanese food!

Yelp
When visiting this restaurant, it's typically understaffed and often has a long wait with many open tables. I visited it for a second time and while eating my sushi notice several pieces of hair throughout my food. I will not be returning.
google avatar

Bianca T.

Yelp
Came here for a little reunion with some friends. The service was great and the ramen was pretty good. Drinks were also tasty!
google avatar

Jasmine G.

Yelp
By far the most bland food I've ordered from anywhere ever. It's like they're afraid of using seasonings. The sushi was great but the ramen is TERRIBLE. Tasted like straight up water.

Tauren E.

Yelp
Miso soup was not my favorite, very salty, Spicy Salmon and Spicy Tuna Rolls were ok at best, the shrimp tempura roll was great! The service was fast and they were nice. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice, very clean and neat.
google avatar

Yelp
A good spot for some tasty ramen. Normally pretty speedy service, and they do take out well so it's fresh still when you get it home. I wouldn't say that it's my number one spot for sushi by any means, but some of their rolls are decent. They have a big menu with options, but I definitely recommend the Chicken Shoyu or Spicy Dan Dan ramen bowls.

Leeah V.

Yelp
The ramen was delicious and flavorful, with a rich broth and decent meat, though it could have been more tender. Although the wait was long, the waitress was very kind and friendly.

Yelp
Tanpopo ramen is a hidden gem for ramen and sushi in Hales Corners near Milwaukee. Its very unassuming ambience, friendly friendly staff and delicious menu is everything you can ask for in a ramen restaurant. We got the spicy miso ramen, tonkotsu ramen, hote sake and two appetizer sushi rolls. It was very well made and we enjoyed the warm broth on a cold Wisconsin day. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Khaum L.

Yelp
Husband wanted ramen and we had been to Tanpopo before and wanted to give it another try. It wasn't busy on an early Sunday afternoon and we were seated right away. Everything was great even for just one server running around serving all the tables until he got help from another lady when people did start to come in. We ordered the takoyaki and gyoza for appetizers and both had the spicy miso ramen. The food was quite disappointing to be honest. The takoyaki wasn't cooked all the way through. It was super gooey and doughy. The gyoza was ok, but the sauce was way salty. We can tell both items were frozen and not made in house which was very disappointing. The ramen broth was great! However, the pork belly and shredded pork was super funky tasting.. it was old meat which has a very strong smell and taste to it. Being pregnant, I ate everything other than the meat just to be safe. Don't know if we will return because both time weren't all that. And it is sad that the food quality has gone downhill. If it was portion, we wouldn't mind. But don't serve us potent over due meat. It tasted like a farm.

Yelp
Food was awesome with no complaints Service could of been better with only one server during the lunch time rush (roughly 10-12 tables) This particular could use some updating from glassware to furniture Was disappointed with a rather small menu and the price point of several items

Yelp
First meal after landing in Milwaukee. This place is so warm, welcoming and cozy. My favorites were the tempura vegetable roll , I could've eaten so many of these! The ramen was classic, delicious noodles. Service was great, everyone was super friendly. I'd definitely go back here!

Yelp
Brought my family, brother, my son's girlfriend, and daughter's best friend for dinner on our Christmas excursion day. WOW! Jenny was a very hospitable host for a restaurant that was down 3 servers. Her server for us was amazing. The restaurant isn't the largest or most up to date but what they lack in those areas surely makes up in their food! We were a party of 11 and thoroughly enjoyed our rolls and ramen dinners. I apologize I did not take photos of everything. I was so hungry that we tore in almost immediately. As a note, my wife was very happy that not only she was able to have gluten free ramen dinner but also GF soy sauce that they brought to our table for her. My Vegan daughter was also happy with her Vegan Ramen. She ate all of it and if you knew her, know that she doesn't normally finish her meals What we ordered and my family that had each dish commented : Crab Rangoon Roll - Incredibly delicious with REAL crab! Never tasted anything like this. Salmon Maki Roll - Light and Fresh....so clean tasting! Shrimp Tempura Roll - Complex flavors yet able to distinguish the different tastes and the crispy or smooth textures! Spicy Dan Dan - Perfect spice, broth, and serving. Vegan Ramen - The Ramen and the broth were unlike anything she's tasted. Beef Pho - I've had Beef Pho before but this just set the bar. Shoyu Ramen - Ramen and a taste explosion in my mouth from the broth. Spicy Miso Ramen (Mild) - Awesome! Just enough heat so I can taste all the flavors. Tonkotsu Ramen - How can there be so much yum in one bowl?! 5 out 5 stars from our fam. Be patient with the servers and they'll treat you well. They're doing their best and working their butts off. Cheers!

Yelp
We didn't know what to expect but it was a pleasant surprise. Very good food, excellent service and we plan on going back.

Nicole A.

Yelp
Delicious Pho and Bao Buns!! Would definitely go back. The waitress was extremely nice and we received fast service.

Charlotte O.

Yelp
Last time I visited I had the tonkatsu pork ramen. The broth was the porkiest pork flavor, short of drinking pork fat. The noodles were delicious, and the soup was hot! I will be back.

Tristan S.

Yelp
Ramen was good- sushi is average at best. Granted it was a takeout order but more was expected m
google avatar

Melanie L.

Yelp
I'll be honest, I don't come here for the sushi. I come in for the ramen! However, the sushi has always been fresh and tasty. if you're looking for a hearty ramen then this is as good as you can get. It's such a perfect bowl comfort food, like a warm blanket to wrap up in. Whether dine in or take-out, the quality of food is great. Service is good and the staff are so friendly. I definitely recommend popping by for a hearty bowl of tonkotsu ramen.
google avatar

Yelp
This may be my new favorite restaurant. The first time my daughter and I went some years back, we just had sushi. We weren't impressed, to be honest. The second time we went, we had ramen and pho. It was ok. I had a hankerin' for ramen today, so I decided to give Tanpopo another shot. We must have either gone on off-nights back then, or they've really stepped up their game. Everything I had today (spicy Miso ramen and a Firecracker roll) was amazing. The food arrived within minutes after ordering. Even the Long Island Iced Tea was perfect. My server (owner?) was also very helpful and friendly. Will definitely be going back soon!

Yelp
It's a 3 week business trip in the States and we're craving Asian food after a long day. We didn't place any expectations since we're in WI and just wanna have some soup. Surprisingly, it was a tasty ramen with proper toppings. Have to give it a five stars!!!

Cindy P.

Yelp
It took awhile to get seated, they seemed understaffed but once seated our food came quickly. We got the spicy Dan Dan noodles, tonkotsu ramen, cream cheese wontons, edamame and avocado maki. Everything was delicious- hearty servings too.
google avatar

Alyssa P.

Yelp
Really unimpressive. The ramen had no flavor and maybe one scallion in the bowl. Everything is really overpriced and bland and plain.

C M L.

Yelp
I'm just getting introduced to ramen and sushi and at first the menu choices were a little overwhelming. But a wait person patiently answered my questions and I settled on a pork soup, my friend had a noodle dish with chicken. We shared a roll with salmon and avocado. All the food was just delicious! I could tell that they used fresh noodles from the texture. The broth was excellent and pork was tender and flavorful. I will definitely go back to try other dishes
google avatar

Brit T.

Yelp
The spicy miso ramen wasn't good IMO. Very bland. I had to add things to make it taste better. Sushi roll was small. Ordered shrimp tempera roll the shrimp was not tempura battered at all. This place was a no for me
google avatar

Latiful A.

Yelp
Came in for dinner. Staff was kind and attentive. Ambiance was cozy and pleasant. Our food ranged from good to great depending on the item. The chicken curry platter and tampura roll to me were awesome. Also, the camomile tea might me made in-house really nice as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Second time coming here and still amazing like last time! The woman seating us remembers our order without a pad of paper and the food comes out super fast, less than 10 min after she puts our order in the hot food comes out! Appetizers less than 5 min after ordered! The decor is comfortable and great seating! Girlfriend had sweet and sour chicken and it's the best we have ever had! I ordered the chicken curry plate and such flavor again! Prices are not horrible for two people! Chicken curry has a mild spice to it but amazing flavor

Ally S.

Yelp
Had a good experience here. Good staff even my kids liked the food which I feared it being something new they wouldn't enjoy it. Very customizable dishes
google avatar

Beth R.

Yelp
Honestly one of the most disgusting and poorly executed meals I've ever had. The ramen tasted like oily saw dust and the general tso's was a soggy mess. The waitress saw none of my food was eaten and never asked if there was a problem. Entirely not worth it...
google avatar

Richard A.

Yelp
Our favorite place for Ramen! Always delicious. Great service. Wide variety of choices from Ramen, Sushi.., Sashimi, and popular Chinese dishes. The Spicy Dan Dan Ramen is my go to. Just the right heat and delicious broth. Always get the Gyoza and The Craby Wasabi Roll. Great portions too.
google avatar

Alexis Y.

Yelp
I went for lunch and I ordered two rolls. The service was fast and we had no issues. Although the inside is rather unappealing in my opinion especially when serving sushi. The rolls were very small in size not what I'm used to. I don't think I would go back.
google avatar

Leah G.

Yelp
I visited recently for lunch with my sister on a weekday to check out a new sushi spot, since we tend to always just revisit our favorites. We both ordered the 3 roll lunch special. I ordered salad with mine but was brought soup - not a huge deal because I also like miso soup. What was a bit disappointing was the size and presentation of the sushi. For the "spicy" rolls they just covered them in a sriracha and a off-colored "spicy Mayo" that was unappetizing to my sister and I so we didn't eat those rolls and the server never questioned why not or why we didn't want a box. Since we were still hungry I ordered some tonkatsu ramen which was good and the soft boiled egg was done really well. Definitely more a ramen spot than a sushi spot which is fine - now we know. Also good to know they have a carry out window for those cold days when you need to warm up with some hot ramen!
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
I actually really enjoyed this place. The sushi was really delicious. I went on a Sunday. It was quite busy for a Sunday and the service was extremely slow. They seemed frazzled and disorganized, but the lady explained to us that she was in the process of training staff and apologized for the wait. Not a huge deal; first world problems. My sister got the curry fried rice with shrimp and chicken. I liked it. She loved it, but there was too much curry powder in there for me. We also ordered the Bulgogi; this was not authentic Korean Bulgogi. It was still decent and I enjoyed it though. Just not the flavor profile I was expecting of it. I got the cherry blossom roll and salmon nigiri. It was absolutely delicious. It was so delicious I ordered another cherry blossom to go. No lunch specials on Sundays, which was unfortunate, as sushi tends to be pricey. I'll try to come during lunch hours Mon-Saturday.
google avatar

Kelsi K.

Yelp
Tried the Dan Dan Ramen for the first time and it was top notch. Also enjoyed some gyoza and a few sushi rolls. Everything was fresh and hot when it arrived via delivery. I liked that the sesame chicken didn't have a thick bread coating, it was tasty. We will definitely be ordering again.
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
This I my go to ramen place in town. The place is consistently busy. The service is great, the ladies are very kind and quick. I've had sushi rolls here too which were delicious. The prices are reasonable as well.

Michael B.

Yelp
Outstanding Tonkatsu ramen and the others are fabulous too! We always get the Niji Tempura (Salmon and avocado Tempura). Well worth the trip!
google avatar

Christin W.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious and they revolving door of foodies proves we weren't the only ones who thought so. Busy but they kept the food rolling out. Waitress was so pleasant and rocked the dining room like a boss. I had the Tonkotsu Ramen. Added corn and an extra egg. It was tasty, hot and filling. The spring rolls were crispy and delicate. Perfection. The boy went out on a limb Bulgogi. A must try. I took my ramen to go so I could eat his leftovers. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We had our food delivered and everything was delicious and piping hot. The ramen and fried rice were excellent.

Yelp
Quick service, great food, and lovely workers. There's lots of different options on the menu and the drinks were all delicious. Definitely plan on going again

Yelp
Came here for dinner with my fiancé. We sat all the way in the back by the windows and the lights there are more dim. It was so cold back there. Wish there was a heater haha but no worries We changed our seats. Our waiter is so nice to us. He accommodated me when I told him my mai Thai doesn't have a taste of liquor like the mai Thai I normally get. He got me a new one. He was so respectful and making sure everything was good at our table. Everything taste good. The pork belly looks so plain but it taste so good. I like how soft it is when you eat it. Normally I don't eat pork like that too. This one taste good. Our ramen noodles taste great. We got so full we wouldn't eat anymore. Even I couldn't finish my ramen. Took the rest home. I feel warm after eating that hot ramen. We will come back here again. I want to try another ramen and other dishes.
google avatar

Ro T.

Yelp
The food is always I mean it always great, not ever a bad experience. The service could use an extra person just to help but the people are nice even tho they have had their share of waiters/waitresses they do a great job at maintaining a positive environment. We go every year and hope to see someone invest in this place as much as we invest eating there haha
google avatar

Jose N.

Yelp
Was a very unassuming restarting from the outside, as soon as you enter it's an entirely different place. I walked in and the nice lady said seat yourself anywhere. I struggled with the menu only because I wanted one of everything. I finally committed to the pork buns and a bowl of pho. The pork in the buns was so juicy and the flavors of the veggies make these a must have. They were like little tacos. The pho was good, full of noodles and thinly sliced pork which unfortunately was dried out, but the savior was the homemade chili flakes in oil. You have to request it from your server and they will bring it right out. Service was fantastic and menu is full of so many choices.

Yelp
Highly surprised with this spot!!! Got some lunch. Used their online ordering and arrived early. It was ready, fresh, and packaged perfectly. Crab Rangoon roll- probably the best crab Rangoon resemblance roll that I've ever had. Creamy crab inside, tempura flake outside. Delicious sweet & savory sauce. Firecracker roll- wow. This roll is absolutely amazing. A incredible bite of flavor and freshness. I cannot explain how this roll has it all- but it does. Highly recommend it. The only downside is the rolls are a little on the small side. But nothing too bad. Usually special rolls are larger than the regular rolls. But it was just the toppings that made it larger.
