We visited Tantalus on a rainy Waiheke day as a group of six. The sweeping views & vineyard grounds everyone talks about were hidden behind grey skies and sheets of rain. The good news was they didn’t need good weather to deliver something special.
We started downstairs at the craft beer bar where Alibi Brewing Co. creates their beers on site. The team here were excellent, knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about what they’re pouring. It’s a relaxed space that sets the right tone before heading up to the restaurant.
The lighting design in the main dining area is genuinely beautiful. Warm, considered, making a rainy afternoon feel like an occasion worth dressing up for.
The Waiheke oysters were unanimously declared the best any of us had tasted. Fresh, briny, clean. Don’t skip them.
The sharing nibbles were excellent. Properly sourced & warmed olives and bread with that crust-to-crumb ratio that shows someone in the kitchen actually cares about the details.
Across our table, steak, lamb, and fish were all cooked with real precision.
Each dish was executed well, seasoned thoughtfully, allowed to be what it was meant to be.
Service in the restaurant was good and accommodating.
Our waitress helped us shift a few dishes from the fixed menu to à la carte, which we appreciated.
Feedback across our group suggested there’s room for growth in menu and wine list knowledge, but she was attentive and willing to make our experience work for us.
We’re all learning, and the genuine effort was there. Solid 4 out of 5.
The wine list offers plenty of depth if you know what you’re looking for or want to explore.
We did not get the views, couldn’t explore the grounds, missed all the sunny Waiheke moments people come for.
We still left very satisfied.
When you can deliver that quality of experience regardless of weather, you’ve built something solid. The location is a bonus. The food and atmosphere stand on their own.
Worth the ferry trip, rain or shine.
Recommended for a special occasion.
