On the Grid : Chico's Mexican & American Restaurant

"A West side breakfast and lunch taqueria founded by Federico Rodriguez Jr., a latino businessman and volunteer firefighter. Chico’s is located near the corner of Western Avenue and Olive Street along a corridor that has become emblematic of South Bend’s resurgence. Their Carne Guidada pork stew, served with rice, beans and tortillas, is the move." - West.SB

Taqueria Chicago is a true hidden gem! The moment we walked in, we were greeted with a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The dining space is small, so if you’re coming with a big group, I’d recommend calling ahead or being prepared to wait a bit so they can rearrange tables. But it’s definitely worth the wait. The queso was hands-down some of the best I’ve had in a long time. it was creamy, flavorful, and absolutely addictive. The tacos were packed with flavor and cooked to perfection, but the real star of the meal was the Menudo. It was honestly some of the best I’ve had in years. It was rich, hearty, and full of bold flavor, with a generous portion size that left me impressed. Another nice touch: they serve soda in bottles, which I always prefer. The staff was very friendly and attentive, and even with a packed house during the lunch rush, the food came out surprisingly fast. If you’re in the area and craving authentic, flavorful Mexican food, Taqueria Chicago is a must-try!

I love this place and the food is excellent. I am, however, a little sick of ordering, jumping through extra hoops to add special instructions, and then those instructions aren't followed whatsoever. I've been ordering the nachos for years now, and they used to absolutely drown them in the toppings I selected. Now, even though I add those exact instructions through DoorDash, then go a step further to call and confirm those instructions, and even offer to pay extra for it, I get nachos with substantially less toppings than they originally used to put on them. It's really annoying. One would think when the words "drown them in cheese" is used, you wouldn't see 3/4 of the chips completely untouched by cheese or any of the toppings. At present, 5 chips have all of the toppings on them. I counted. The rest are untouched completely, except for one that has two pieces of ground beef on them. Like what the hell.

I love it here, we go often. Amazing food, amazing people. Absolutely beautiful and such a homey place. Super welcoming, kid friendly. If I lived closer I’d be there everyday if I could! Definitely recommend!!

Well, the first thing I'll say is... VIVA Mexico! Don't make this place a stop as a detour, make it a destination. No kidding; if you're near Chicago coming from the East, this is a stop in South Bend. I will dispense with any Guy Fieri catchphrases and just say it straight. Excellent. Authentic. Tasty (sabroso!). Real. Mexican. Food. Full stop. We travel a lot and get sick of fast food, so we look for local places that worth a stop; the hidden gems Triple D misses (Guy, you better be reading this and inviting me when you go there). Mexican is simple but can be easily messed up. What's the difference... the meat and how you season it. The tacos carne asada were bomb... and a heaping portion of meat, no skimping for $3/taco. It was lip-smacking yummy... why? Because the meat was marinaded and then seasoned properly. Winner dish. Same with my 15-year-old daughter's pernil burrito/taco in a flour tortilla. She said, "I ordered one taco and there was so much flavor." House-made guacamole that was mixed not two minutes before I ordered it. Excellent salsas... a red, hot one from chile de arbol but not just heat for the sake of heat, flavor. And a green tomatillo y avocado salsa. Both house-made with love. Great job Kevin & Adriana, owners/managers + Jeanette, front of house. We will be back and will be hungry.

Google
Shout to the person with the playlist! Every song was a banger. Felt like I walked into a family owned restaurant in a neighborhood in Chicago. Try anything asada here. All the salsas are top tier! Service is very on point. Best place to get asada in Michiana!

Google
I'm working in the area and decided to try the restaurants in the area this week. This was my first stop and I'd say I'm very happy with it. The food was good. Service was great and my waitress was very helpful and fast. I had the carnitas platter and the meat was tender and the portions were good for me!! Ill be back to try other items on the menu!

Google

Google
Amazing food, service and family. My family will drive over 30 mins just to eat at this wonderful little gem. The tacos are my heart happiness. The red sauce is fire!

Yelp
I call to place a to go order. The lady says something then hangs up. This happened 3 times , then all I got was a recording , going right to voice mail.

Yelp
We ended up in South Bend this past week and we were hungry. Conveniently, we came in on a Tuesday and we're able to advantage of the taco Tuesday deal of $2 for a corn tortilla taco or $2.25 for a flour tortilla taco. Staff is friendly, clean restrooms, clean interior overall and they even have high chairs available. I got 2 ground beef tacos with all 4 available toppings for the taco Tuesday deal (lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro) in flour tortillas. Tacos were delicious and I'm super glad we came in. Cool art on the exterior wall. If you are in the area, I'd recommend Taqueria Chicago for some tasty tacos.

Yelp
Great local restaurant. Service is fast, but that doesn't come at the expense of quality. Our food was tasty and fresh. We got horchatas, too--highly recommend!
google avatar

William A.

Yelp
Great authentic Mexican tacos. The pastor is pretty legit. We went at lunch time and service was prompt. Laid back, no frills restaurant with good food.
google avatar

Sareen A.

Yelp
This place was an absolute gem of a find on our road trip from Chicago to Pittsburgh. The tacos are very reasonably priced at $3 a piece, with free topping additions of tomatoes, lettuce, cilantro, onions and a green and red salsa. I highly recommend the al pastor and steak taco. Barbacoa and chicken weren't worth it, chicken wasn't seasoned very well. It was so good overall that we went back for a second round. Definitely try it out!!

David K.

Yelp
I come in to town and I like to party. Next day...Crudo:( Nothing in the world makes me feel better than the Menudo served at this restaurant! You can tell by the steady flow of locals from all backgrounds that is a neighborhood/city favorite. I know it's mine. Everything I've had from the menu is fresh, flavorful, and fantastic! And the art on the side is so sick!
google avatar

Kyle W.

Yelp
My favorite neighborhood Mexican spot. Al Pastor tacos are my favorite. Hard for me to order anything else on the menu. Lol Service is good but slow at times depending on how they are staffed but that doesn't stop me from eating there...so glad I tried this place out. Definitely a "go to" for me now....

Aunt_Bea M.

Yelp
The food was super bland & super boring, no cilantro, no chipotle, cummin, peppers, onions, garlic, your basic herbs & spices were all missing, the salsa was shamefully very watery (tomato water), the worst I've ever had! terrible!! Burrito was cold inside & out, they didn't even bother to warm up the tortilla. The prices are too high for this crap but service was fine, it's not her fault the cooks can't cook...This place is a joke & nothing Mexican about it & the music is too loud.
google avatar

Robert E.

Yelp
It was really good food but for a restaurant that doesn't even offer fountain drinks they were a bit pricey.
google avatar

T H.

Yelp
Best food in this area hands down and you cannot get better guacamole anywhere! The service isn't great, but the food makes up for that.

Julia H.

Yelp
What happened to my formerly favorite Mexican restaurant??? Was so looking forward to Taco Tuesday....Not only had the prices DOUBLED, the food was inedible. Even my dog agreed. He wouldn't eat it, either. Blech. Por favor, bring back Abuela María!
google avatar

Cody H D.

Yelp
Not bad at all! Especially for South Bend, Indiana. Good service, if a bit curt. We were here for lunch and everything we had was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the tacos, and my friend had the chili Verde which he said was excellent. The chili relleno could've been better but otherwise I liked everything.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
One of my "go-to" places when I'm craving authentic Mexican food. Excellent gorditas, tacos, rice, beans, etc. the decor is lacking (fast food vibes) but the food is awesome.

John H.

Yelp
Very friendly service. Clean restaurant food is very good haven't ordered anything I didn't like. I would recommend. I will be back for sure.
google avatar

Alexandra L.

Yelp
The best mexican food! I drive from New Carlisle to get their food. Even though we have close places we've tried. No one has come close. I'm very picky about my mexican food being a mexican woman and eating my moms mexican food all my life. My husband loves the enchiladas Verdes. My boys love the burritos. The tacos are amazing. The best part is that in this restaurant the Salsas, rice, and beans are not an after thought like most mexican restaurants. They are very flavorful. This place is legit, and we will continue to give them our money. My family from Chicago loved this joint too. Now I'm hungry. Had to edit to say that the prices are very reasonable.
google avatar

Preston I.

Yelp
A friend put me on to this place, and I can see it becoming a go-to spot to visit whenever I'm in South Bend. Good Mexican food and great prices!
google avatar

Tom P.

Yelp
Fucking great food I love it!! Great prices staff was very polite didn't have to wait for the food, great atmosphere!!

Light Y.

Yelp
Place is a amazing and the services is good as well just I don't know why he chip refills cost money but other than that the food was amazing.
google avatar

Rod W.

Yelp
I ordered 3x el Pastor soft tacos and a lime Jarritos. $10.49 I had to trim fat off of the meat, or this would have been 5 stars. A very nice bite to the red sauce making these tacos very desirable.
google avatar

Kaydi M.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great authentic Mexican restaurant, this is it!!! Best tacos I've had in a long time. I had a barbacoa taco, ground beef, and Al Pastor taco. The Al Pastor was my favorite. I also had a side of rice & beans. Sooo yummy!!! You do get 1 free basket of chips and salsa at your table. They will charge you for additional baskets. I'm ok with this so I don't over eat before my meal. The waitress was prompt and the food was on point!!! I'm SO glad I stopped in this place. I can't wait to go back!!!

Chad M.

Yelp
Good authentic Mexican food. Have ordered from here multiple times with consistent results.
google avatar

Maria F.

Yelp
These are the best tacos in town. We tried the al pastor, chorizo, lengua, and barbacoa and each was juicy and flavorful. Their green tomatillo sauce is delightfully citrusy, and if you want a touch of heat, you can use the red. Your first basket of chips is free, and each additional chips and salsa is $1.25. If you're over on Western, don't miss Taqueria Chicago.

Sofia R.

Yelp
Great tacos! Highly recommend the carnitas tacos with the green sauce! Excellent service as well.
google avatar

Mercedes L.

Yelp
I was not impressed with this restaurant. I had much better food. Los Humildes Restaurant is much better. I ordered the Shrimp Fajitas and they were the worst I have had! My husband had the Molcajete 7 Mares and they loaded it with imitation crab and not of anything else that should have had and it was over cooked. The Service was the worst! If the food would have been great, I could deal with the service but it was not! To top it off there was a table of clients that were drunk and loud saying bad words. If I had young kids with me, I would have left. I don't agree they should serve beer to client if they are drunk and loud saying bad words in a family restaurant! My experience was the worst!! I really did not want to give a star.
google avatar

Erick S.

Yelp
Overall the food is great but some of their staff is not very nice. Maybe she was having a bad day but that's not what you should portray especially if you're in the serving business. Food was good, very good street food.
google avatar

Indiana B.

Yelp
Eat there once a week at the least, would eat there everyday if I could. Chicken tacos are the best around!!!! Best tacos joint in South Bend!
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
Found this place passing through town. Great Tacos, quaint place. Fast friendly service. The chorizo and lengua were real standouts.
google avatar

Kelvin M.

Yelp
The food is great. The staff are very helpful. I enjoyed my meal. The tacos are superb.
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
Amazing tacos! Quick and excellent food and service! Came here based on a personal recommendation and I will 100% be back next time I'm in south bend!
google avatar

Stephanie P.

Yelp
A lot of people told me this place has the best tacos. I will kindly disagree with that statement. They are not the best in South Bend, but they are good.
google avatar

Erin K.

Yelp
Best tacos in south bend at super reasonable prices. I always get the steak tacos with corn tortillas. I love how fresh and simple they are. They also have great Horchata that i usually get. Highly recommend
google avatar

Colie Z.

Yelp
The quesadilla style tacos on flour tortillas are SO good! Like think about them all the time kinda good. There's such a variety- steak, chicken, pastor, shrimp, lengua, and more. The complimentary chips and salsa area win as well. I have wanted to try the guacamole, but it's pricy at $6.95. I'd also like to try a torta too, but I can't go there and not get the tacos.
google avatar

Tina L.

Yelp
Compared to supermercado Rosales, Chicago has teeny tiny tacos that sometimes come soggy because they end up ladling the meat juice into the tacos and then wrapping it up. They also scrimp on the garnish-they'll give you a single piece of cilantro leaf and 4 teeny minced pieces of onion. no I'm not kidding. BUT, the piece de resistance at Chicago is that their salsas are amazing. I can't get enough of them. The perfect marriage would be tacos from Rosales and salsas from Chicago. That would be a four star establishment. Pro tips: -the steak is the best, the rest were okay but it was a bit dry, on account of the fact that none of the tacos had very much cilantro and onions on it -get more salsa, or pay for extra salsa if you're doing takeout. we didn't get enough lime and sauce with it. -be forewarned, if you do get salsa, I would do a 1:4 red to green ratio even if you like it hot. The salsa roja makes Tabasco taste like vinegar w/ red food coloring.

Brittani M.

Yelp
You can easily miss it going down Western but you will regret it! So good. Every time. Consistent. Fresh. I can't order tacos from anywhere else .
google avatar

Erik M.

Yelp
By far the best Mexican food I have had in the South Bend area since moving here from California. The place is kind of out of the way if you are a ND student but the food coupled with their ridiculously cheap prices makes it well worth it. I ordered an Al Pastor Torta which had the right balance of spices and wasn't greasy like so many al pastors are these days and my fiancé had a vegetarian taco which she loved. The one slight knock is their salsa wasn't the best, but I consider salsa to be one of those items that is so dependent on an individual's preferences. Overall, two tacos, one jarritos, and a torta with tip for 13 bucks. Win. Win.

Yelp
Ive been here several times, although it is not located in the friendliest part of South Bend. We had carne asada and carnitas this last visit, and the carne asada was a little masterpiece. The sauces they serve with the food are incredible..best homemade sauce Ive ever had in a taqueria. Give it a shot, you wont be disappointed!
google avatar

Diana Z.

Yelp
Only tried the tacos (four types). My favorite was the barbacoa and both the red and green sauces were delicious.
google avatar

Beth E.

Yelp
Love this place! It's become a ritual to bring my mothers here when in town. Just love the tacos and guacamole. The service is exemplary.
google avatar

Larry F.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times and never really had a bad experience. The restaurant is fairly clean, friendly staff and reasonably priced. Certainly nothing fancy about the restaurant. However this time I ordered the chimichanga and it came out in a timely manner however it was floating in Grease! Also the restaurant was extremely chili. I will definitely give this place another chance.
google avatar

Giselle M.

Yelp
Love love Taqueria Chicago! A haven for a Texan in Indiana! My roommate is from the Mexico border and I am from north Texas and we both agree this place tastes like home. Definitely get the quesadillas over the tacos (like a larger, cheesy taco, not the normal pressed quesadilla you picture) or the chicken flautas are some of the best I have ever had
google avatar

Chad H.

Yelp
Fantastic Mexican food. The service was a little shaky. Had the steak, carnita, and barbacoa taco! They all had good seasoning and flavor! Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Jana D.

Yelp
I was looking for a Mexican restaurant open late in SB and a friend told me to come here. It did not disappoint! I had the steak burrito and chips and guacamole. The meat was seasoned well and the guac is fresh and full of flavor. I will definitely return. The staff are also very welcoming and kind.
google avatar

Dave N.

Yelp
Whoever enjoys this place needs to have your tastebuds tested, I think they are broken . My experience here was extremely unpleasant. First off the waitress ,servers, whatever ate extremely lazy and rude .kinda just brought out food out as they pleased . No nice interaction , on their phones the whole time . Food was really bad. Had tacos , torta, and burrito . Sauces watery and the meat tasted dirty . I won't ever step foot in that sump again . Boo the previous reviews.
google avatar

Yelp
If you are stuck in South Bend and want a good taco or want to go get a Mexican breakfast at 9 am this is the place. One of my favorite places in this rust belt town. It is so cool, they named it after Chicago - and this is just as good as a Taqueria in the big city. Cheap prices. Family owned. Mexican TV on the wall. Sometimes Mexican music on the juke box (always wondered why they have a juke box). Love the Juevos a la Mexicana here.

Ryan L.

Yelp
Best Mexican food in SB clean and the prices are very fair the staff are very friendly and handle the lunch rush like professionals my only complaints are i wish they took Amex and had fountain drinks and possibly sold beer as a cold one would pair very well with their steak burrito which is so delicious
google avatar

Alicia F.

Yelp
I was in South Bend for work and we needed to grab lunch. Someone had previously suggested we check out the Mexican restaurants on Western Ave, so I pulled up my handy yelp app and chose the highest rated one. Glad we took the advice! I had a carnitas burrito and it was pretty great--the carnitas was moist, savory, and had those tasty crunchy edge bits that are the best part. The rest of the burrito was fairly standard, maybe a little mushy, but the green sauce was delicious, and I loved that they gave me half a lime wrapped up with my takeout order. My coworkers had veggie tacos and a carne asada burrito, and were happy with their orders too. Sure, it's kind of a hole in the wall, but the food was tasty, came out quickly, and was reasonably priced. I'd go back if I was in town again! Tip: they accept credit cards, but only for orders over $5 :)

Yelp
My wife and I decided to try this place based on all the positive reviews the restaurant has received. We were not disappointed. Small clean place. Service was good.. The strong point of this place is the freshness of the food and the availability of Mexican dishes that you can't get at most other Mexican places. Dishes such as lengua (tongue) con mole and Menudo (tripe) soup. My wife, who speaks Spanish, had a nice chat with the woman who seemed to be running the place. We love our salsa and chips and while they were good the salsa comes in a TINY bowl. and if you want more they charge for it.
google avatar

Tom D.

Yelp
Decent Mexican food, definitely not the best I've had. I do like to support small family owned businesses and that is what this is.
google avatar

Emmaline B.

Yelp
Amid the stay-at-home order, my husband and I have been looking for local eateries to support and I was in the mood for Mexican. This place had solid reviews so we gave it a shot... I was extremely disappointed with the quality. I ordered a steak burrito and guacamole. The burrito was missing the rice and was also room temperature-- it wasn't cold, but wasn't warm in the least. It was as though the ingredients had been sitting out, then half-hazardly thrown into a tortilla. The burrito was barely wrapped, to the point I couldn't pick it up to eat it; I ended up putting it in a bowl and eating it like a taco salad. The beef was seasoned nicely, but when so many other aspects were wrong it didn't matter. As for the guacamole, it was very bland and over-mixed-- so much so that it had a goo-like texture. Again, it was room temperature. Other than a few chunks of tomato and leafs of cilantro, it was over worked avocados in desperate need of seasoning. Overall, the whole experience was a huge letdown and we will not be repeat customers.
google avatar

Lia H.

Yelp
Cheapest tacos you can get while also maintaining a standard. The meat is delicious and perfectly marinated, the toppings are fresh and the food is honestly very authentic. Considering you can get like 5 tacos for $3, I'd say it's a great spot
