Small and lovely. Steak with pepper sauce - that sauce is really REALLY good. Fish with shrimp and rice amazing too. Cash only, be aware. Updated 20240420. Easter Sunday. Delicious Steak au poivre and I highly recommend the Camarão a Galo. Nice orange twist to the usual garlic shrimps in the Algarve. Yum. Excellent value and lovely people serving you. Throughout my life, I have eaten in many high-class restaurants. This restaurant is among my top 3 restaurants I have ever eaten at and it’s here in Olhão. Incredible and professional service, tasteful food and great wines. I cannot recommend this enough. Thank you for this wonderful experience!

Delicious food in a beautiful setting away from the crowds. The Portuguese dishes were outstanding in flavour and like nothing we have ever had before. The service was excellent, welcoming and helpful. The staff were very friendly. The restaurant is tucked away down a small side street and looks tiny but has more space than you think and is like an Aladdin’s cave opening up to a real treasure of a dining spot. I would highly recommend the entire menu!

Tasca O Galo is a hidden gem in Olhão. I have been coming back numerous times throughout the years and the food, the service and atmosphere are impeccable. The menu has slight various each time to keep things exciting and there are specials each day that you simple won’t find anywhere else. Each meal is crafted by a true chef in every sense of the word. Quality hand chosen ingredients, perfectly prepared and beautifully presented by amazing staff. Highly recommended.

The fish risotto was good and pepper steak ok. The apple crumble desert was really good if you like it sweet. Cash only, nearly had to wash dishes.

What wonder spot. We came for dinner and was greeted warmly by the manager and staff. We ordered the Sea Bass which was excellent. We loved the low key vibe. Definitely worth a visit.

Our flight in was quite delayed and by the time we got into Olhão, it was already closing time for most restaurants on a Monday night. We stumbled upon this sweet and quaint restaurant just up from the main restaurant row and the staff happily sat us out front the restaurant under the bougainvillea. Lovely! As is the region, we had the requisite grilled bass and sea bream (dourada) with a side of grilled veggies. Both served on a wooden board with an abundance of veg and potatoes. Unsure that there was any starch, we ordered a side of rice with it as well. It was very sweet of them to make us a brand new batch of steaming rice at the end of their night. We obviously did not need but they happily obliged. This was our very first meal in this country and they truly set the tone for a lovely trip in the Algarve. The servers were kind, smiled in abundance, gave us some local colloquial tips and shared some highlights of their town. We fell in love with Olhão in the short time we were there and this little family run restaurant lay the groundwork for it. Beer was extremely cold and the wine list was well chosen and all was very reasonably priced for quality of food, service and ambience. I say skip the big patios for one lunch or dinner and head into this alley to give them a try. Muito obrigada!!

On a tiny alley in the back roads of Old Town Olhão, you will find a tiny tasquinha with old world charm, excellent service, and outstanding food at very reasonable prices. It is called Tasca O Galo, some calling it Tasquinha O Galo, roughly translating to tavern of the cock (get your mind out of the gutter, it's a rooster dammit). TripAdvisor told us that they opened at 18:00, but they often get things wrong (leading me to tell them to shove my 'Top Contributor' designation a few years back) and we were 30 minutes early for dinner. No worries, we will come back shortly, I told the nice lady who spoke pretty good English. A cute little place, maybe a wine cellar a couple of centuries ago, they have three four-tops and two tables for two, so you had better get there early if you want to eat. There are cocks all over the place in tribute to their name and to the Rooster of Barcelos, one of the most common symbols of Portugal. This tavern has a comfy and homey feel, the perfect spot for a tasty southern Portuguese meal with some influence from a few other delicious cuisines (Belgian/French, Thai, Japanese, Italian, and others). We started with a bottle of 2016 Herdade Grande (€15), a robust red (tinto) from Alentejo, the gastronomical capital of Portugal well known for their excellent wines. Along with the tasty red, we ordered a basket of fresh, homemade breads (€1.50), a delicious olive tapenade (€1), and a bowl of fried potato cubes with slices of savory chorizo (€4) ... YUM! My better half ordered a spinach and cheese omelette (€8.50), more like an Italian fritatta than an omelette, coming with a side of hot, crispy fries. My wife gave me two thumbs-up, a definite winner in her book. I decided on the filet with roquefort sauce (€18), cooked medium/medium-well, also coming with a side of fries, a savory cooked cabbage, that I thought were onions, and a dab of pureed plum compote. The filet, three good size medallions, was one of the most tender cuts of meat in memory and the roquefort sauce sublime, plentiful enough to coat my crispy fries as well. The only faux pas, and I am not sure it was unintentional, was that my filet was cooked much closer to rare than medium/medium-well. I am not a blood lover and normally would have sent it back, but after giving it a try, I found it tender and flavorful without gushing blood all over my decadent roquefort sauce. The chef obviously knows what he or she is doing, but following orders is obviously not a forté. Finishing our meal off by splitting a dark chocolate mousse sprinkled with sea salt and a hint of chili pepper (€3.50), we left very well satiated with thoughts of 'what will I have next time'. Being new residents of Olhão, we will likely be returning to Tasca O Galo for years to come. Less than €38 for a bottle of wine and a meal like that, all I can say is ... HOOAH! We found this place through Yelp and wanted to grab a quick dinner as we were passing through town. They had 1 table left for us (we didn't make a reservation, but I would) and they were super nice! We got 2 orders of the tempura shrimp, the vegetable risotto, and the fish and vegetable risotto. Everything was AMAZING. Great shrimp, AMAZING fish and some of the creamiest and best risotto I have ever had and the vegetable risotto was topped with little garlic chips/crisps. Devine. We also got 2 orders of fries, which the server forgot about but when we reminded him they were out super fast. Great. Defiantly recommend if you are in town.

A picturesque restaurant in an alley. Quiet, not in the busy main street. The people were nice and very inviting. The food was delicious and cheap in comparison. The bread and olives (couver) was nice for once: freshly made. We had bad experiences in de rest of Olhão. This was perfect. We had most of the appetizers (we went there twice in our holiday) and they were all good. The other dishes too! The staff were all very nice and attentive. They speak English well. The locals also go there. The best in town in our experience!

Lovely setting in an alley, promising authentic local cuisine. Our experience was marred by the food arriving over an hour after we ordered. The food was nice, if unremarkable. The service was a little erratic. In another night we may have enjoyed it more.
