I Got a Close Look at Tasmania’s Famous (and Endangered) Wildlife — Here’s How Travelers Can Help Preservation Efforts

The Best Things to Do With Kids in Australia — From a Safari Sleepover to a Waterfront Theme Park

"Kids may know of the Tasmanian devil from the Looney Toons cartoon, but the real-life version is so much cooler (and cuter too). There are no cages and barriers at this "unzoo" which is focused on saving the devil, offering visitors "nose-to-nose" encounters, and the chance to feed wallabies and kangaroos. After spending time with the animals, kids can play on the Little Devil's Playground, which includes an interactive display about Tasmanian devils." - Travel + Leisure Editors

One of the best interactive experiences we've had in Tasmania. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, they certainly improved the whole experience. The giftshop prices were very reasonable. The Tasmanian Devils are simply adorable, the parrots are cheeky and the kangaroos approachable and all are adorable. You should add this to your itinerary, if you don't then you'll be missing out. Thanks for a wonderful experience.

Google
A great place to see Tassie Devils! Be sure to watch the tours as the staff share lots of interesting information and answer all your questions. Billy was fantastic! We also saw pademelons, green rosellas, kangaroos and more. Well worth the ticket cost. Nice giftshop too.

Incredible experience interacting with all the wild animals!! Displays, informative staff & the animals stay wild with how the unzoo is run! We got to feed a possum, wild birds, kangaroos & Lady Barron geese! Such an amazing time!

I was there late and only spend about 1.5h here but it worth it. Staffs are all kind. I can feed kangaroos and the birds (on our day, green rosella are in duty 😅 I heard it can be different birds each day so you will never know) and see the staff feed the Tasmania Devils. A little of stories around whatever the species we found on the day. It’s unzoo so we cannot be sure what we will see. Pretty cool.

The Unzoo is the perfect place to see T-devils and get really up close. Stay for feeding time and be sure to walk the entire place. Spend time with a zoo keeper they are super knowledgeable and happy to spend time with you.

We stumbled upon this place while driving and were really excited to check out the “unzoo” concept. Unfortunately, our experience turned out to be quite disappointing. The facility seemed poorly maintained, and I wasn’t convinced that the animals were receiving proper care. I even noticed a few Tasmanian devils with visible skin issues, which was concerning, especially given their enclosed space. The tour itself felt lackluster, providing little insight into the wildlife or the animals’ backgrounds. In short, our visit was a stark contrast to the exceptional experience we had at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary—I would gladly spend my money there over this spot.

Yelp
Visiting the Unzoo in Tasmania was amazing. So impressed with this place. Here, the wildlife thrives without the constraints of traditional enclosures. The innovative "unzoo" concept lets you experience the animals up close in a setting designed to emulate their natural environment. One of the highlights is, of course, the Tasmanian devils. These iconic creatures are as fascinating as they are ferocious. Watching them interact, particularly during feeding, is both captivating and a little terrifying. They're incredibly competitive and vocal when food is involved. You must do the bird feeding. Having them land right on your hand to eat is amazing. The hand-feeding doesn't stop there--feeding the kangaroos was another unforgettable moment. There's something so calming and joyful about interacting with these gentle creatures, and I could honestly do it every day without getting tired of it. The Unzoo's approach to wildlife conservation and education makes it an amazing place to visit. It's a must-see for anyone who loves animals and wants to witness them living as naturally as possible without the confines of traditional cages.

Yelp
Spectacular! You have to do this! One of the coolest things I've done. We stopped here on a tour we did through Tasmania Tours. We got to pet and feed kangaroos. Feed some wild birds, and see the Tasmanian devils! There was a guide that told us so much about them. Great tour guides and information given. You can learn about their conservation. And also about a virus that causes them to get a cancer in their face. They are trying to help prevent it from spreading amongst the wild Tassie devils. And finally, we got to watch the keepers feed the devils! And see them scream at each other over the food. A can't miss stop!

Yelp
We visited the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo because I had to meet the pint-size marsupial with a super-sized attitude. After viewing the devils in action, we wandered amongst kangaroos and wallabies in a large enclosure, observed quolls, golden possums, potoroo and falcons. We got to hand-feed kangaroos, walk among friendly wallabies & take a wildlife walk to see eagles and rare hawks. Endemic to Australia, the Tasmanian devil is both entertaining and horrifying to watch. At feeding time, snarling and snapping, they crush up bones and fight among themselves for the last shred of food. They are the only meat-eating marsupial, now found only on the island of Tasmania, although they once roamed widely across Australia. This park is dedicated to wildlife protection and rescue, and also boasts extensive breeding programs. Before leaving, we explored the park's Wildlife Gallery, filled with photographs, artwork and sculptures. We scoured the enticing gift shop for locally made mementos, including a wide range of flavorful wines.

Yelp
What a cool concept!! As an animal lover, I usually hate supporting zoos, but it felt awesome supporting this one. It's not really a zoo, the animals have much more freedom and aren't locked in cages! They are free to come and go as the please - how good!! We were able to see several Tasmanian devils, pademelons, rosellas, eels, and were able to hand-feed kangaroos! The feeding presentations were super informative and all of the animals came around when it was feeding time. The staff were so sweet and you could tell they love working there. Definitely check out this place when you're on the Tasman Peninsula!

Yelp
The Tasmanian Devil is in a significant amount of trouble, as they emphasized when I walked in, and if you want to see one while supporting the conservation efforts, this place seems to make sense. Their "unzoo" branding is a bit pretentious; it's not fundamentally different from a lot of other decent outdoor wildlife sanctuaries. Their Tasmanian Devils are retired from breeding in conservation sites, and they are not hidden. They get to run around, and you can see them quite easily, and they do entertain. They're vicious and not terribly bright (the whole head is apparently jaws with very little brain), so the ubiquitous pictures that people get while holding other animals in other Australian animal parks are not happening. The place is modest, but does have some other interesting animals, including kangaroos you can walk up to and pet, and a view of the water. I wasn't blown away by anything, but if you really want to see a Devil, this is an easier way than trying to find a wild one.

Yelp
This alone with worth the trip to Port Arthur. I was hell bent on seeing these adorable little creatures! This park is mainly a refuge for weak or wounded animals native to Tasmania and Australia. The main attraction is of course the devils, but they also have a very extensive bird sanctuary and an enormous play range for kangaroos and wallabies. Re-entry is also free if you want to come back for later feeding times and shows. The park is open everyday, but the best times to hang out are of course at feeding time, which seems to happen almost hourly for the devils. My friend and I were stoked to see and learn about all the cool animals, and there truly is a ton of information to take in about each of them. My friend and I visited the park around lunch time, and had a great time. The staff were quite friendly and informative. They also gave us a bit of advice to go grab some lunch and come back to the park around 2:30pm for the Kangaroo feeding. That was some sound advice! The kangaroo feeding is by far the most fun and interactive because you are allowed to walk onto the open range and hang out with the 'roos! Normally, walking up to a wild kangaroo would get you thrown into the hospital, but this bunch are all together more docile and comfortable with humans. I've read that the park was just recently awarded with government funding and support for expansion. We had so much fun at this park, so I can only imagine what it will be like in the future. I'd love to go back someday when it's complete!

Yelp
A small, engaging, humane place - perfect for 1.5 to 2 hours of your time. Fed wallabies out of our hands, saw a bird show, saw them feed devils and quolls - left happy and edified. Cute store too. All that said, I feel like I've been there, done that.

Yelp
The tawny frogmouth birds stole the show from the Kangaroos that we hand fed. One of the most interesting displays was the feeding of the Tasmanian devils. We watched them eat a chunk of raw wallaby with hair, skin, bone, and muscle all included. On the downside, admission was quite expensive and the signage and directions to find the various exhibits were downright confusing. Still, we managed to spend three hours here wandering through that grounds despite being lost most of the time.

Yelp
Really cool! It was much larger and had far more animals than I had anticipated! Staff were very knowledgeable and the feedings were fun to watch. Walking through the wallabies and kangaroos was our favorite. The birds were really cool too. And of course, the Tasmanian devils :-)
