Unfortunately, we were in Maine right after Labor Day and a lot of the smaller restaurants are now closed. I had been looking for a small lobster shack on the ocean, but we were a bit too late for that.
A lobster fisherman I met recommended Taste of Maine, so we gave it a try. The "ambiance" is the elephant (lobster?) in the room, so let's talk about that first. The first clue is the giant, and I meant giant, lobster on the roof. If it had a helium and a rope, it would fit right into the Macy's Thanksgiving parade. However, walk inside and prepare to be overwhelmed by the shear collection of "stuff." This place raises tacky and touristy decor to a fine art. Holy Hannah! My eyes still hurt!
Decor aside, I was in the mood for lobster. Unfortunately, all of the lobsters are one and a quarter pounds in size, which is not optimal. For those who don't know, you get less meat in two one and a quarter lobsters than in one two-and a-half pound lobster. However, not having a choice, I got the "twin lobster" meal that comes with a salad (I paid an upgrade for the garden salad rather than the Caesar salad. It also comes with an ear of corn and melted butter ($57 plus an extra $3 for the salad)).
It was interesting because one of the "twin" lobsters was a hard shell and needed the cracker. The other was soft shell and I could easily break it by hand. I've heard lots of preferences for one or the other, but I never tasted them literally side by side. My conclusion: There was very little different!
I liked my meal, although I had been hoping for cheaper prices in Down East, Maine, but it was what it was. Interestingly, it seems that half their menu has "market price" instead of the actual prices, so you have to ask your waiter about each item (for any type of seafood). Couldn't they just post it? Or do they want people to order without knowing the price?
My wife is not a seafood eater, so she wound up with chicken nuggets, which is hardly worth reviewing.
The food was good, the view was good, and the service was good too. I do wish I had a choice of size lobster, but I didn't find any lobster over one and a quarter pounds during the entire trip.
