"“Tad’s Chic Dump”: The old neon sign glows amid the trees on the rugged edge of the Columbia River Highway in Troutdale, Oregon. While half the letters spelling the name of Tad’s Chicken ’n Dumplins have stopped glowing, the restaurant itself is far from a dump. With a gleaming wood bar, homey red-checkered curtains, and a beautiful river view, Tad’s old-fashioned roadhouse is a welcoming watering hole for those wandering through the dense greenery along the Sandy River. This legendary comfort food institution was founded in the late 1920s by “handsome Tad Johnson,” whom locals knew as “a rascal and a fisherman, (in that order).” Johnson did what any fish-loving gent of loose morals looking to attract fellow rascals would do: He opened a roadhouse selling fresh, local seafood. In the ’40s, Tad’s moved to its current location and added a jukebox, dance floor, and—most importantly for its current legacy—chicken and dumplings. Now, locals and sojourners alike stop at Tad’s for filling food and peaceful outdoor scenery. In the summer, families flock to the lower dining room, enjoying the river breeze from the open windows over menu classics such as local salmon, liver and onions, and the iconic chicken and dumplings. Consisting of chicken stewed until tender in a rich duck-fat gravy and doughy dumplings cooked in chicken broth, the dish has earned its reputation. Light eaters be warned: The fluffy, biscuit-like dumplings are truly enormous. As for that neon sign, when half the sign first went out in the 1950s, locals loved the revised “Tad’s Chic Dump” so much that it became part of the establishment’s mythology. Rather than replace it entirely, the restaurant’s owners decided to compromise. Now, if you approach Tad’s from the west, on the Columbia River Highway from Portland, the sign reads “Tad’s Chicken ’n Dumplins.” Approach the restaurant from the east, however, and you’ll notice the sign’s playful reverse: A half-lit advertisement for Tad’s Chic Dump—just as the locals like it. As of July 2021: Tad’s is closed indefinitely Know Before You Go The restaurant is open on weekdays from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., on Saturday from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m." - Reina Gattuso, mizmandi84, greenestendertouch, davepoirier

Be aware this place is take out only. These are the reasons I gave this restaurant 5 stars and it all comes down to the food. Portion size: Excellent & Flavor: Fresh and delicious! Those egg rolls must be made to order they are huge (as big as your hand) crunchy and delicious. The Egg flower soup was such a comfort soup and could've been a meal on it's own. The BBQ pork was tasty (I've had better) but still worth it. The fried rice chef's kiss. I'm pretty sure they charge credit card processing fees which was a bit annoying and the service was fair but it got the job done lol. My friend and went twice in our 3 day trip! No regrets...

Google
Such a delicious choice for dinner or lunch, and breakfast leftovers sometimes. The history in this place is amazing, the food is just as awesome. Thank you Soo much for a wonderful place to eat.

Google
The food and service wasn't bad I felt the veggies could have been cooked instead of raw in my noodle bowl and the sauce on the chicken was way to sweet for my liking. The price was good and the atmosphere was pleasant which is in the historic part of troutdale. So my friends if you like raw veggies and sweet chicken definitely give it a shot, jus sayin

Google
We decided to try this place because Chinese Happiness closed. There was a huge piece of plastic melted into the middle of my egg foo young. Which was already so salty that it was hard to eat. The chicken lo mein my boyfriend got was “okay” he said, but it’s not worth coming back (or eating plastic) for.

Google
Great food delivered to the pub next door....The egg rolls are like puffed Monte Cristo cabbage sandwiches that are light and airy made for the soul! Chil atmosphere and great service.

Google
Best food for the value. Love this place. I come here every time I’m in the area.

Google
It is good to have a Chinese meal in this town. But you know most of customers are not Chinese. So please don’t expect too much, you will gain more. The food is much more you can image, so you should order less dishes to make sure you can eat them all. Of of my order:回锅肉,but it just 叉烧肉with many vegetables. 麻婆豆腐should match your taste flavor a little bit. best luck though.

Google
I ordered the kun pao chicken extra spicy (I know I'm kinda crazy right?) and it was just delightful. Had a good kick, even had the extra spice to it. Definitely a great food experience for a good price. Will probably be set to my speed dial.

Chris D.

Yelp
Just had lunch here today was delicious and better than I expected. I had the lunch special Buddha delight was an excellent selection of vegetables came with soup I had the egg flower soup very good. With fried wontons and an eggroll and steamed rice. All of which was superb. On top of that it was only $7! I even licked the plate! This is an excellent establishment to come to for lunch or dinner. The nice lady there was great. Thank you and I will be back soon. -cheers

Yelp
Tasteless. Mediocre at best. Why do places use so much batter on deep fried shrimp , pork and chicken? Huge portion but I only ate half.

J M.

Yelp
Haven't been to Taste of Village since being laid-off. Had to treat myself. Delicious. Firm yet tender vegetables. Best bbq pork and golden crispy fried shrimp. Must have the House Mustard, not the packets and red sauce. Always get the Hunan chicken. Had the won ton soup today. It was all great. Alice warmly welcomes me and remembers my name. She is always warm, friendly, and kind. She will pull a chair out for me if they have been put away so I can wait comfortably. Consistently great food and customer service!

Jennifer L.

Yelp
The location is perfect. Right on the main strip. Only street parking, no private lot. The service is always great but the food is just ok. I've tried a handful of dishes and none of them are really anything to write home about. The General Tso's chicken is probably the best item I've had off the menu. Portions are pretty big so you definitely get more than enough food and they're pretty cheap.

G O.

Yelp
Best Chinese food on the East Side of Portland Metro! Prices are decent and portions are proportionate to match. Really good egg rolls, huge size and very crunchy on the outside. I'm addicted to them! The meat quality is much better than other Chinese restaurants and the veggies are always cooked so they're still crunchy. Flavor is fantastic, and the sauces are divine, just try the lemon or orange chicken, or the General Tso's chicken. I've never gotten any bad food from here. It's a great place to pick up food or to sit and eat, located directly on the main street in scenic Troutdale, and conveniently located for a trip up (or back from) the historic Columbia River Highway. My family has been coming here for more than 15 years and Taste of Village has been part of many a holiday or celebration. If you're looking for great Chinese food in the Gresham area (or all of the East Side!), look no further than this gem!

Liz S.

Yelp
Amazing food and quick service. Only take outs so all dining furniture was off limits. We're use to Cantonese food so what we ordered was perfect for our taste buds! We love the thinner noodle of the Lomein, the balanced beef gravy in the Willow beef, and the unkcious sweet sour pork with pineapples hit all the right chords of a hungry crew. Each dish was more than the normal serving we're use to so everyone could eat their fill. We'd definitely go back again the next time we're in Grisham.

Anna C.

Yelp
They don't clean out their shrimp. I was shook! Made me wonder what else they didn't clean before preparing my food. I used to go here all the time when I was younger. I was very disappointed finding out they didn't take the time to clean my shrimp before serving them to me. As of now, I wouldn't recommend this place. I hope they improve their quality standards.

Isabel C.

Yelp
Before the pandemic this place was amazing. The food is still good but not how it used to be. It's really disappointing that they no longer have the main dine in area opened. Which made the service go down hill! The elderly bartenders are extremely rude and seem flustered. Almost makes you not want to order anything and leave.

Doree P.

Yelp
I spent 41 dollars on dinner and got home and then fried rice was missing. It annoying because by the time I made rice my chicken was cold. The whole point of getting dinner to go was not to cook. They were not even busy because it's takeout only. We won't go back again

Tamera M.

Yelp
Always the best food and service. Been eating here for over 20yrs.....never disappoints

Jana O.

Yelp
The bartender was very rude when trying to order a drink. No Whiteclaw, no Kertle One, no Tito's, when asked "what DO they have?", the response was, "whatever's in the gun". Upon leaving, because of the rude bartender, we were told, by the bartender, to "go back to the "pearl district"! Won't go back to this place!

Calvin C.

Yelp
MSG alert. I spent close to $60 on food myself and a friend. After a few bites and half hour to 45 minutes later my tongue and lips starting to swell. Had to take a Zyrtec. If you are allergic to MSG I would not recommend.

Honey B.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much when you walk by but the food is flavorful and the prices are fair. I have always had good service in the restaurant and the bar.

Jim B.

Yelp
To the short redheaded bartender in her late 50s or 60s. You are the absolute worst bartender I have ever met. She served me 3 drinks that I had never asked her for and charged me for every one even after I had pointed out they were wrong and I was charged for everyone. She was very rude. I will never come back to this restaurant/bar again.

James D. H.

Yelp
Some friends from church suggested Taste of Village. So being in the area we said yes. The parking is all street and by street, I meant, Hill. Steep Hill Street Parking. Some level spots can be found a block away. Some in front but mostly hill street parking. The building was a hotel. Now. A "Cheap Eats" hotspot. Not a lot of ambiance or seating but they make up for it on portion control. As in, I don't think they use it. Our party of 9 quickly accommodated, Table's moved and new settings all done. Drinks and menus out. I was told they give big portions. I found that to be true based on how many to go boxes we needed. I had kung pao chicken and bites of other plates. All tasty. All too much. The Bill.... Not bad. Decent Food. Decent Prices.

Kim P.

Yelp
By far my favorite place to get won ton soup in the Portland metro area!! the bok choy and veggies make the soup worth the drive!!!

Michael S.

Yelp
Delicious food, good prices, friendly service. I will be back . Reminds me of my previous fav Canton grill that went out of business during Covid

Stephen O.

Yelp
The price was reasonable the food was excellent I would recommend giving the place a try if you like Chinese food The rest of my family was also satisfied with the food

Sarah O.

Yelp
Our fav Chinese spot in town! We love going here and sitting in the lounge on snowing days. Cozy environment, good drinks, and warm soul food. Try the house special Lo mein. It's delish!

Brit G.

Yelp
I mean, this place is as good as Chinese restaurants can get in Troutdale. They have their good days and their bad days, I've noticed. In my experience, they've been consistently good, all but for like, maybe one time. I personally really like the owners/workers there! One of them made a really great recommendation as an alternative to sesame beef (because they don't serve sesame beef) and it's become part of my regular order and a favorite among my friends during chinese food nights. It's pretty clean in there considering it's an older building. I can't say anything about the bar, since I've never been in that part, but restaurant is great! What we usually get is General Tao Chicken, veggie Lo Mein, Egg Rolls & Fried Rice. The egg rolls are honestly some of the best I've had. I'm pretty sure they double deep fry them or something! Whenever we get a hair for egg rolls sometimes we just order 2 sides of egg rolls and we're good. The Lo Mein is really good too; those noodles tho! I've also called my orders ahead of time. Whenever I do call ahead anywhere, I like to give them an extra 10ish or so minutes. So, I've never had to wait very long to pick up my called-in order. Well, now I'm craving chinese food after writing this.

Whitney M.

Yelp
I love this place and sure I've had good Chinese food elsewhere but this is like home to me...only in Chinese food, if that makes sense. The waitress that was always "unfriendly," actually is very nice I think it's just a difference in language and culture but my whole family and I got along great with her. If you're looking for a fancy eating experience don't go here, it's very Much a mom and pop shop but it's clean and quick for take out.

Janae R.

Yelp
Let me start out by saying that there are hardly any good Chinese food restaurants near me. I've had the worst and I mean worst experiences. From raw meat, to flies, I've seen it all. Taste of village is the first Chinese restaurant I've eaten at that I've never questioned what I'm eating! Lol. If you want Good, fresh, cantonese style Chinese food, try this place! The Szechuan chicken and Szechuan vegetable dishes are fantastic. Also, their house lo mein is fabulous

K M.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in Troutdale and trust me, I've tried them all. Very wholesome portions and very kind both over the phone and when you come in for pick up. Be ready for them to blow your phone up when your food is ready though, which I liked their punctuality to get you their food while it's still hot. I just can't answer when driving to you! Will be back, oh wait, I have been back, again, and again. =P

Robert R.

Yelp
This is my families favorite restaurant, we eat here several times a month. The kids LOVE the "red" chicken (sweet and sour chicken). They are always really nice and the service is fast every time!!! I highly recommend taste of village!!!

Vickie S.

Yelp
The best hot & sour soup ever. My friend and I make the trip out there from North Portland. Candy is awesum. We usually go and order off the lunch menu. It is always fresh and tasty. Many times will order a specialty dish or maybe combination to take home for that night or next day. The portions are adequate. Do go there at least 1-2 times a month. On a fixed income so don't go as much as I might like. This is my favorite Chinese restaurant.

Qiu Q.

Yelp
The food tastes so good! Make me feel like going back to hometown and waiters are so friendly

Jenn B.

Yelp
Food is great! The only complaint I have is the fish tank in their entryway, way too small for the fish in it. The portions for the food are large and well priced. Been here twice and never had problems! :)

Bonnie E.

Yelp
If you get anything here, get the egg rolls. They are extraordinarily good egg rolls. I haven't tried much else, but those egg rolls are above and beyond.

Amanda I.

Yelp
My parents chose this place as a dinner venue last night. They wanted margaritas with their Chinese food (tea for me) so they chose to sit on the bar side. If you enjoy the sounds of loud drunks at the bar and poker machines this is the place for you! My parents decided to order two of the family style choice C which included broccoli beef and Kung Pao Chicken, egg flower soup, BBQ pork, egg rolls, fried rice, and fried chicken. The soup was untraditional but still tasted good thanks to a minimal amount of cornstarch in it. The BBQ pork is just what you would expect and was very tasty with the generous portion of hot mustard and cocktail sauce. The broccoli beef wasn't terrible but was still pretty tasteless. The Kung Pao chicken and egg rolls had almost no flavor and I could only have a bite or two of each. The fried rice seemed to just be rice with soy sauce and a couple of slices of BBQ pork on the side. I would have given it only one star because service was slow and they didn't refill my tea, but my parents were happy with their food, the large portion sizes, and their drinks. There was still enough food for leftovers... which I will not be eating.

Kathy B.

Yelp
Love this little place!! It's a gem for excellent, fresh & hot food! Sevice is always great! Their dining room is currently closed due to Covid, but they have outdoor seating & their lounge is open with seating. If you go in a small group their family meal deal is great too!

Kristal J.

Yelp
Do not order from here. We waited 1-1/2 hours to get our food and when We called to check on it they said they aren't associated with any delivery service. However it took my payment.

Tia M.

Yelp
Okay place. Doesn't invoke the most reassuring feeling of cleanliness, though it does appear clean. Ordered combination 8 with BBQ pork and pork fried rice both being a bit dry. The sauce they give the table helped though. May go again if in area but wouldn't necessarily seek I out

Halley P.

Yelp
Highly recommend. The food is fantastic and the drinks are strong. The house special lomein and the generals chicken is to die for.

Leland S.

Yelp
Great food. Really liked the egg foo young. Very large appetizers. There were 4 of us so we ate family style because they give you so much on one plate. Everything was fresh and flavorful. Will be back.

Charity K.

Yelp
Their pan fried noodles are amazing and their potstickers are to die for! Soooo good!!!

Kellie B.

Yelp
I'm giving four stars ONLY because of ONE older staff member who can be short and inattentive. Other staff wonderful, so please, Taste of Village, consider her retirement. I live in Troutdale and have never heard any other complaint than this one. Food EXCELLENT, large portioned, always fresh, authentic and since I often do carry-out, they are always prompt and food is ready when they say it will be! Inside dining area small and they are frequently busy, (a very good sign in itself!), but if you do have to wait, it's WELL worth it!

D J.

Yelp
Best egg rolls EVER. We drive from Portland regularly just to get them. The staff are friendly. Food is fast. It's a solid all around performance.

Devin M.

Yelp
My family's favorite Chinese restaurant in Troutdale. Although we've only dinned in once, we always order take out. The house special fried rice is great! The potstickers are good. And the prices are reasonable.

Jessica B.

Yelp
Decided to try this place out with my 4 yr old son. Server/front desk lady is lacking in customer service skills for sure. She became irritated when I changed my mind and decided to eat in even though I hadn't even paid yet. I ordered the Buddha vegetarian plate and chose egg flower for the soup. The dish had almost ZERO flavor. Soup was good. Not coming back.

Rich A.

Yelp
Stopped here before work today and got one of there lunch specials B3 by the way. Kung Pao Chicken along with Fried Rice, spring roll and some wontons. Also got a order of Crab Puffs which i think are the best i've had at any chinese food place in the Northwest. Can't say enough good things about this restaurant. Service there is always great as well, food always perfect everytime i've ate there.

Toni W.

Yelp
Great, friendly place to visit with folks while waiting for dinner to arrive. I sat in the bar and played the machines while having a well made pina colada. I had an appetizer of bbq pork which was extremely tender. My food came and was hot and delicious. They sure served generous portions. Some of the best chinese fried shrimp I have ever eaten. I enjoyed My dinner completely and the left overs were wonderful the next day.

Brenda D.

Yelp
This was honestly the worst Chinese food I've ever had. Every single thing was fried, flavors were nonexistent. The bottom line is they can't cook. The soup was ALRIGHT, their only saving grace. They do serve huge portions, but since it tasted so bad this was not a positive thing.

Jack B.

Yelp
Enjoyed this experince v. much. Got general tsos lunch plate, with p fried rice and bbq pork. V good, pork a lil dry tho. would recommend. plz but a bike rack outside, had to chain my bike to a railing nearby worried for its safety. didnt have time to check out the lounge but men in bthroom seemed to b having a g time.

Sharon J.

Yelp
On our way to see the waterfalls on the scenic byway for the Columbia River Gorge and we decided we better grab a bite to eat. After Troutdale there isn't many places to stop for food. It doesn't look like much on the outside or the inside, your typical little Chinese joint. it was about 2pm and we could still order from the lunch menu. The prices were very reasonable, and we ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken and the Fried Shrimp. It came with soup which was one of the best Egg Drop Soups I have had, they also came with a Spring Roll and 2 Fried Wontons and your choice of steamed rice or pork fried rice. The chicken was all white meat and very good, but the shrimp was excellent! You get 6 large prawns that were so tender and tasty! You must try this little joint, it is worth the stop!

Dave-Kirsten P.

Yelp
My in-laws live in Troutdale, and when the whole family comes to town, we always eat here at least once. The food is VERY good, and the portions are generous. We have never been dissatisfied with anything we have ordered. The restaurant is small, though, and can fill up pretty quickly when a large crowd like our family comes in. I want to make one comment about what people have said about the server. She is a very hard working woman, and I believe one of the owners. She doesn't have nearly enough help when they are busy. One time, I was sharing a story about my special needs son with my in-laws, and I broke down in to tears. Embarrassing in a restaurant, yes, but that's real life. When we stood up to leave, the server came over and gave me a giant hug and said "God bless you." So give her a break; she's a first class lady.

Jeri C.

Yelp
Food is good. Hot, not expensive no problems. Service yikes do not bother the server she may bite! I did everything I could think of to get her to speak, or act friendly in any way, not happening. It actually became a challenge to see if she would grow manners. Never happened..

Don N.

Yelp
Took a chance and we hit the jackpot! Food was fresh and not overlooked or greasy. Hot and Sour Soup was excellent, so we ordered more to take home. Don't misunderstand Chinese service. In general, they work very hard and our expectation of smiling and friendliness faces is not their custom. Our order was taken quickly, the food came out in five minutes and everything we requested was supplied promptly. If you want a tasty and healthy meal, try this place.

D. S.

Yelp
Stopped here after a shopping trip with my family, everyone was pretty happy with their meal, service was great, and the food was delicious. I had the Chicken Low Mein and it's one of the best I've had! Food was hot when it arrived to our table.

Patrick M.

Yelp
Do not phone order here. I called at 4:45 and was told 15 minutes. Got there at 5:15 and paid and waited until 5:30 to get order. Asked for manager and got owner. Would not compensate me at all. Told him there are other places for food such as Wu;s Garden and Vi Thai. Will never go back! I recommend when you get there for pick up. Don't pay until product comes. You can always walk away.

Jeff S.

Yelp
Nice low key Chinese stop. Bar is friendly and the portions are big. Could use some updating, but all in all a great place for good Chinese eats
