Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg is a cultural gem and one of South Africa’s major art museums. It has a welcoming atmosphere, diverse exhibitions, and historic charm. The gallery is praised for its eclectic collection, from European classics like Picasso and Degas to vibrant contemporary works by regional artists. The gallery offers a rich mix of styles and cultures. Its historic setting is one for the books. Housed in a former law court building, the architecture adds depth to the experience, with spacious rooms and unique exhibition layouts. Although closed for a while, Cafe Tatham promises to make a grand reopening sometime soon. It is known for the cozy spot that it offered where one coukd relax and reflect on the art, while being served well-priced meals and coffee. The gallery occasionally hosts concerts, including those by renowned pianist Christopher Duigan, adding a musical layer to the artistic ambiance; as well as sip n paint events. Local talent is celebrated by the gallery where it features exhibitions from local schools and artists, bridging the colonial past with South Africa’s evolving creative identity. Whether you're an art enthusiast or just seeking a peaceful escape, the Tatham offers a refreshing and thought-provoking experience.

FREE ENTREE 😂 Its very well kept, neat and has that amazing vintage feeling to it. The art on display is lovely and fairly concise. They have two stories with a fairly decent range. The coffee shop is the selling point and it has an absolutely lovely balcony view. Perfect for meetings, lunch or even a date!

What a privilege to have such a glorious temple of art in such a small city! I was really impressed by both the collection and variety of art, and the clean and efficient way in which the gallery is managed. This gallery is really an asset for Umgungundlovu.

A good, but small, collection of local art, supplemented by some minor works by major artists of the 20th and late 19th centuries. Nice feel. Some art quite eclectic, some potentially disturbing for children, but generally interesting. Very nice restaurant / coffee bar. Small shop with interesting local art, supporting local artists. A nice place to spend a few hours. Parking a bit limited, but generally available.

Absolutely incredible architecture, perfect place such beautiful art. One of the best experiences of my life is visiting this gallery. Art both local and international. Displays change often so usually a new experience every time. I enjoy the students displays they do once a year too. Entrance is free so definitely worth a visit.

Interesting art museum in Pietermaritzburg - it was established in 1903 and since then showcases permanent & temporary exhibits in a historical setting. Enjoyed spending an hour on Sunday morning.
