How to Plan the Perfect Ski Trip to Zell am See, Austria

"A spa experience recalled as perhaps the most “freeing” activity of the stay: the facility offers saunas, steam rooms and both indoor and outdoor pools for unwinding, and visitors are warned that "the majority of the space is fully nude. In fact, you're not allowed to enter with swimwear on, so just be ready to let it all hang out. And after a few minutes in the heat, I promise you won't even notice." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. What initially led me to travel to Austria and Hungary for 10 days was seeing photos and videos of the Tauern Spa. It’s no exaggeration to say that I planned this entire trip just to stay here. Thanks to the stunning scenery, convenient facilities, and friendly staff, I had a wonderful time. However, my dinner experience was not so great. First, there was an issue with our assigned server's attitude. Throughout the meal, he was sarcastic and flippant, showing a lack of professionalism. We communicated in English, and the server's use of informal phrases like "Happy?" instead of proper sentences made me feel uncomfortable. This kind of behavior was inappropriate for a dinner with even a minimal dress code. Since we don't speak German and the surrounding tables all had German speakers, I'm not sure if the server spoke to them in the same way, but it certainly didn't feel like it. I don't usually feel that someone's attitude is a matter of racism, but in this case, it was so unpleasant that it felt like it. We had planned to enjoy some beer in our room later, so we didn't intend to order any drinks with dinner. When we told our server this, he seemed quite confused and disappointed, repeatedly questioning us and making us feel awkward. Our table was also quite wobbly, which was distracting. We mentioned this to the server, but the first time he said he was too busy, and the second time he said he would fix it, but no action was taken. We had booked dinner for two nights, and after the first night, my partner and I hoped that we wouldn't have the same server the next day. We were very disappointed when it was the same person. The second reason the dinner experience wasn't great was the taste, but that was a minor issue compared to the server's attitude. Everything else was wonderful. Even when our travel plans were disrupted by the weather, it didn’t matter at all thanks to this accommodation. In fact, we were happy to have more time to enjoy this fantastic hotel. With its breathtaking views, large and diverse spa pools, and comfortable, clean rooms, it’s a place I truly want to visit again. I had a great time in a wonderful place. I hope that when I return, the issues I mentioned will have been addressed, making for an even better experience. Thank you for this wonderful hotel.

We booked the RELAX Wellness De Luxe. Absolutely amazing. Highly recommend. Such a beautiful place. There are so many pools to choose from, as well as numerous saunas and solariums. The views were fantastic, especially from the infinity pool on the roof. We had a snack in the restaurant at lunch, which was nice, very reasonably priced, but we had €15 each to spend which we got with the package. Everywhere was clean and staff friendly and helpful. At the end of the day we had a 6 course taster meal. All I am going to say is WOW. The food was phenomenal. Mitchell quality is an understatement. Chef Christof Schernthanter was amazing. When each course was served chef came out and explained what the dish was and where the food was from. All the food was sourced locally. Big shout out to the Matradee who was also made us feel welcome. |Can not recommend thisnplace highly enough. 5 stars does not do it justice.

The room and all facilities were very clean, spacious, and well maintained. It never felt crowded or noisy, even when the hotel was busy. The staff members were always kind, welcoming, and happy to explain everything or assist with any questions we had.

Great location. Close to everything. We are mainly here for the hotel and not the spa experience hence we got the short end of the stick when it comes to patience of the employees. Room is missing trash can in the bathroom I was told to move the one in the living room to the bathroom 😂! Crazy. No coffee cups. No slippers and hesitant employees to give when asked! It is a spa after all why robes with no slippers should i walk barefoot?? Advertised as has coffee machine yet doesn’t, would give you a kettle when you ask. Bathroom amenities are all there except toothbrush and also hesitant to give 2 for 2 people??? Room has no a/c and no ventilation hence gets hot fast and feels like there is no breathing room. Asked for 2 fans and got them so thanks for that. Call reception to get something they wont help you contact the department themselves, they ask you to do it even if the room service does not answer the call. Bathrooms smell really bad!! Space is packed and fully booked I bet if i had come here for the spa experience I would have other things to say. Sadly i don’t. Finally on a good note the views are unbeatable. The sunset and sunrise are like heaven on Earth.

Overall I was very happy with my stay at Tauern spa and Hotel. I had been to this spa before but not stayed in the hotel and this was an anniversary trip for my husband and I. The attention to detail on the food ensuring I could eat was great and the restaurant manager was friendly and attentive. What would have made the trip even more special would be a glass of fizz on arrival or in our room as most of the hotels I've stayed in have added this extra touch with a bottle or glass. In the restaurant I would say our waiter had a bad smell and our experience would have been more pleasant, if he had addressed this. My suggestion would be for him to use deodorant etc. The water temperature for my husband was a little cold and perhaps colder than when I previously visited in March. It would be great to offer a pool with a temperature of 37 38 degrees like some thermal spas do. Loved the hotel spa and panoramic pool.

We spent four nights at the Tauern Spa in Zell am See and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our stay. The hotel itself is large, modern, and thoughtfully designed, offering a sense of space and comfort from the moment you arrive. Our room was spacious and well-appointed, with a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains that made waking up each morning a pleasure. One of the standout features of the hotel is its expansive spa area. There’s a wide variety of pools, saunas, and relaxation zones, both indoors and outdoors, which means you can always find a quiet corner to unwind or simply enjoy the panoramic Alpine scenery. The atmosphere throughout the spa is peaceful and inviting, perfect for those seeking a true escape. We opted for the half-board package, which included both breakfast and dinner each day. The food was excellent – breakfasts were generous with plenty of fresh options, and dinners featured a delicious selection of dishes, all beautifully prepared and presented. The staff in the restaurant and throughout the hotel were friendly and attentive, contributing to a very relaxing experience. The setting of the Tauern Spa, with its fantastic views of the mountains and natural surroundings, adds another level of appeal. Whether lounging by the pool or sitting on our balcony, the scenery was simply stunning and created a sense of being completely immersed in nature. All in all, the Tauern Spa is a wonderful place for anyone looking for a luxurious and restful getaway in the Austrian Alps. We left feeling refreshed and would gladly return in the future.

We really enjoyed our stay! The location is perfect, beautiful view, large and comfortable rooms, friendly staff and the pools…wow!!! The only two points for improvement: the dinner was not good. The food was not tasty at all. Mattresses and pillows are extremely uncomfortable. Not something you would expect from a spa hotel. Still, I would highly recommend as the pros outweigh the cons!

The hotel is beautiful with nice facilities, tasty food, and very polite staff. They also listened to our request and kindly changed our room to one with a balcony. However, we faced several issues: the first room had a broken window and no spa towels or bathrobes, and the second room we received was not clean (dirty bed) and the bins were not emptied throughout our entire stay. Housekeeping was poor overall. In the shower there was no conditioner, and some plates and glasses in the dining room were dirty. At dinner, even water or soft drinks were not included in the half-board. We were even charged €2.5 for a jug of tap water, which was not listed on the menu (although alcohol prices were clearly displayed). Overall, a hotel with potential, but cleanliness and attention to detail need serious improvement.
