First night of KC Restaurant Week 2019 is in the books! Tavernonna received the distinction of being first on my list, so I got a reservation and too my Dad for a nice night out.
And it was a nice night out! Tavernonna is a lovely place right off the Hotel Phillips downtown. There was nothing out of place inside and we had a great table right by the window looking out on the town. Our waiter was very nice and attentive while also personable. Michael, I think his name was. Five stars to Michael (and thank you for saving my purse after I left it there and had to come all the way back to retrieve it).
I ordered the smoked tomato soup for the first course and it was very interesting. Different, but quite yummy. My dad ordered the focaccia and it was not exactly what he expected, but he ate it all naturally.
For the second course, I ordered the salmon and my dad ordered the bolognese. We got a bottle of wine to pair with the meal and it was good, but while on the topic of wine, the $35 corkage fee seems a bit excessive. The bolognese was good according to my father, and the salmon had great flavor but was incredibly undercooked. Not sure if that was intentional, but it wasn't quite to my liking. There also seemed to be lavender or maybe rosemary on the calamari which was a strange flavor. Doing the math, we would have spent less money ordering three courses off the main menu and getting what we would have preferred to order as an entree, but restaurant week is an experience.
Dessert didn't quite hit the mark. The bombolini was good at the start, but after a few bites it was kind of just eating some dry, fried dough. Maybe more of the lemon curd would have been nice. The affogato was good, probaby better than the bombolini which wasn't what I expected.
I think it is worth going back to Tavernonna to try offerings off of the main menu, but this time around, it wasn't my favorite!
