I was told by a friend that going to a luau was a MUST for any visit to Maui so even though I winced as I paid over $400 for tickets for my boyfriend and I, I kept reassuring myself that it would be worth it. All of the other luaus were already sold out. This is a good all-in-one experience for those who might not have enough time to fully explore the island, but I think I would prefer spending the price of the ticket over several different occasions rather than in one jam packed night.
We received a text the day of that we had to arrive 30 minutes earlier than we thought, so when we arrived late, the party was already in full swing. Thankfully, the host manning the tables told me that all we missed was the hula dancing lessons. It looked like we had arrived just in time for the dinner portion, which we were most excited about.
The amount of food we were served was insane. The portions were massive and there were at least 5 different dishes for each course.
We started off with a garden salad, ahi poke, potato salad, garlic noodles, and taro dinner rolls. Then we were served pork chops, sweet potato, kalua pork, garden veggies, pork, roasted chicken, and fried rice with a side of poi. Most of the food was either not good or so-so and the speed at which they served it was overwhelming. We had barely dug into the appetizers when the entrees came, and so on. One of the things that were surprisingly bad were the kalua pork, a famous Hawaiian dish. It was completely stripped of moisture and flavor. The poke wasn't fresh and the fried rice made me crave my own homemade portion. We did eat a good portion of the roasted chicken, taro dinner rolls, and desserts. Our dessert platter of petit cakes and cookies was surprisingly delicious, moist, and light. I loved the Hawaiian and coconut flavors and managed to enjoy them even during the show. In between dishes, we visited the open bar and took advantage of the unlimited drinks.
The rationale for serving the dinner quickly is so you aren't distracted from the show. Over the course of ~2 hrs, your eyes will fixed on the stage unblinkingly, not wanting to miss a single moment of the hula, cultural dances, and fire dancing. They do a great job of showcasing traditional dances from different Polynesian cultures. The performances and atmosphere provided so many great vibes and everyone seemed to be enjoying the night.
Overall, this luau makes a good effort of providing value for the price you pay. Their venue is beautiful and perfect for enjoying dinner over a picturesque sunset. The performances were mesmerizing and service was great. The only complaint I have is that I wish the food were tastier.
