Te Mata Peak, located in Havelock North, Hawke's Bay, is widely considered a "must-do" for anyone visiting the region. The most consistent praise is for the 360-degree views at the 399-meter summit.
On a clear day, you can see the entire Heretaunga Plains, the Napier coastline, Mahia Peninsula, and even the volcanic peaks of Ruapehu in the distance. You can either hike to the top for a workout or drive directly to the summit, making it accessible for families, the elderly, or those short on time. There are several color-coded loops (Red, Blue, Yellow, etc.). The Redwood Forest section is a fan favorite for its shade and "cathedral-like" atmosphere. Trails range from Grade 2 (easy) to Grade 6 (extreme). Some reviewers note that certain biking trails could be better signposted, so it's worth grabbing a map or using an app like Trailforks. It is a prime spot for hang gliding and paragliding, which many visitors find thrilling to watch from the launch ramps. If it’s cloudy, the view disappears completely. Wait for a clear window to get the full "top of the world" experience. Free parking available. Must recommended place to visit.
