Beautiful, elegant and classy.
Teatro Español is a must-visit for theatre lovers in Madrid. Located in the heart of the city in Plaza de Santa Ana, it offers a rich program of classic and contemporary plays, often with top-tier Spanish actors and directors. The venue itself is stunning—intimate yet grand, with impeccable acoustics and a beautifully preserved interior. Its blend of tradition and innovation makes it one of Spain’s most respected cultural institutions.
Brief History
Teatro Español traces its origins back to 1583, when it began as the Corral del Príncipe, one of the first permanent public theatres in Spain. In 1745, it was rebuilt and became known as Teatro del Príncipe, and eventually Teatro Español. Over the centuries, it has premiered works by Spanish literary giants like Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca, and García Lorca. Despite fires and political upheavals, it has remained a cornerstone of Spanish theatre for over 400 years, continuously evolving while honoring its dramatic heritage.
