"Aptly named after the phoenix, this opera house has risen from its own ashes three times, the last in the 1990s when it was burned in an act of arson. It was rebuilt in the same ornate style as the building that had been destroyed—a choice that some critics said was not as courageous as building anew. But the Venetians like things the way they are: Take the Campanile tower in San Marco, rebuilt in the 1900s exactly as it had been when it collapsed. The venue is open every day for music performances and self-guided tours."

15 Best Things to Do in Venice

"The name of Teatro La Fenice, a landmark opera house, means "The Phoenix"—a nod to the fact that it's literally risen from the ashes not once, but three times, most recently after two arsonists burned down everything but the exterior walls in 1996. But it's been rebuilt and restored to its former glory (complete with its world-famous acoustics) by a team of architects and artists who sought to recreate every inch of the way it looked and felt in the 19th century." - Andrea Whittle

Teatro La Fenice – Opera House Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Give us the big picture: What’s the vibe of the place, what’s it like? The name of Teatro La Fenice, a landmark opera house, means "The Phoenix"—a nod to the fact that it's literally risen from the ashes not once, but three times, most recently after two arsonists burned down everything but the exterior walls in 1996. But it's been rebuilt and restored to its former glory (complete with its world-famous acoustics) by a team of architects and artists who sought to recreate every inch of the way it looked and felt in the 19th century. The ceiling is painted with angels, lamps cast a warm glow, and the balconies are like a gilded layer cake. What kinds of events can we see here? The bread and butter is Italian opera—Tosca, Madame Butterfly, the Barber of Seville—but the venue also hosts chamber music and ballet. How are the seats? The theater has 1,000 plush, pink-velvet seats, most of them tucked into boxes that line the five balconies. Orchestra seating is tight, but not cramped, and the slope is flat. Is it good for kids? Unless your kids are into opera, this is more of an adults-only spot (and children under 4 aren't allowed, anyway). As for you adults, note that during opening season and on premiere nights, black tie attire is required; otherwise, it's smart casual. Anything in particular that makes this place special? You're here for the space itself as much are you are for the shows—both are spectacular. It's like going back in time—people dress up, and the whole experience feels fancy and exciting. If we’re going to be in town, what—and who—do you think this is best for? People who appreciate beautiful music and old-school elegance will be blown away. This is a piece of living history." - Andrea Whittle

Google
A must visit place for sure. Unfortunately we couldnt go for a show there but if you can buy a ticket for it I definitely recommend it. It would be amazing to watch something in this theater. The interior design just amazing.

Google
Nice but maybe not one of the most special places in Venice. There was a small queue but no need to buy tickets in advance. If you want use a free audio guide, which you can download with qr code, then recommend to bring the headphones. For additional price - headphone set and audio guide can be provided on the spot

La Fenice is a breathtaking opera house full of history and elegance. The interior is beautifully restored, and the acoustics are exceptional. Even just touring the building is a magical experience. A must-see in Venice for culture and architecture lovers.

Teatro La Fenice is everything you’d expect from a world-famous opera house. The architecture alone is worth the visit: gold-leafed balconies, velvet seats, and chandeliers that make you feel like you've stepped into a dream. I attended a performance here and was absolutely blown away by the acoustics and the elegance of the setting. The sheer atmosphere is enough to leave you awestruck. If you're visiting, arrive early to explore the interior and take in the historical displays!! The audio guide is also wonderful for anyone who appreciates music, history, and breathtaking beauty.

Very over the top and ornate, gold everywhere and flashy chandeliers. Worth a visit, but no need to spend long. Would recommend going just as it opens so there isn't many people around. You should buy tickets in advance however, there is also an app you can download to listen to an audio guide (remember earbuds!) if you don't want to download the app you can pickup one of their phones to listen to it, just it might be slower and you will need to return it.

Google
This is a really fascinating theatre. Worth the visit. I bought a ticket in advance and downloaded the theatre app for the audio guide, which helps and is numbered with each room/section. Some interesting facts on the audio guide so definitely recommend downloading The theatre itself is amazing architecturally and incredible to think what it must be like when there are operas

Google
A good self guided tour via provided audio . It is a beautiful theatre with quite a history. Highly recommended, and also the cafe/bar was very reasonably priced with fantastic service.

Google
Stunning opera house with some very impressive history! 7 euro entry for students, and the audio guide is included. Some fantastic art, and as a bonus we got to see to the Italian an orchestra practicing from the box seats! Absolutely worth checking out when in Venice!

Yelp
Beautiful theater. It is definitely worth going on a tour of the theater. You won't be disappointed. It is an amazing building.

Yelp
The theater is absolutely beautiful. The performances are so so. Now, this is slated to be one of the oldest standing theaters in Europe, and of course a major tourist attraction. So while we were in Venice, we had to come here to watch a performance. I ordered tickets online in advance for the desired date by using the official website in English. On the date of the performance, I was informed that the performance was actually not in the main theater, but in a side tiny recital room. I felt cheated especially for the amount of money we paid. The performance was ok, but nothing impressive at all, and we were very disappointed that we didn't get to see a performance in the main theater. Although, a few people we met told us the performances were not that great anyways so we didn't miss out on much. We were able to get a quick tour of the main theater to snap a few photos, and that was nice. Bathrooms were pretty clean.

Yelp
Such a beautiful theater! However, 5 stories and only one elevator (I was on crutches) led to us missing the last water bus. We went to see an opera by Verdi and were not disappointed by the grandeur of the theater -or by the acoustics. This is one of Italy's most treasured theaters -for good reason! The seats in the boxes are a smidge uncomfortable for long periods of sitting -but no less uncomfortable than other theaters where you have to sit for long periods of time. Honestly, I was a little relieved to have a chair instead of one of the built-in seats that are so common. This allowed me to move and angle the chair for better viewing (we were on the side). I would definitely choose a side seat for this reason in the future (other seats within the theater did have built-in seats).

Yelp
The most beautiful thing I saw on my trip to Venice! Go for a tour. Or better yet, go for an opera. I saw Madame Butterfly and was blown away. A friend and I went to the box office the day before the performance and they had marked some 200 Euro seats on the main floor down to 100. Once inside the theater I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It felt like I had stepped into a movie because I did not realize theaters this beautiful existed in real life. You have to see it to believe it!

Yelp
This theatre is an absolute masterpiece inside. From the outside it doesn't look like much but that's because all you need is to step inside to be transported to the elite royalty of Italy in the 14th century. The tour is self guided with Audio guides. It's not a long tour, literally 15min and you're done. What will take you time is taking pictures and admiring the intricate detail of the architecture. The fee is $10 Euros and $3 Euros extra if you want to take pictures. I'm sad I wasn't able to see a play as there weren't any available but it just gives me an excuse to come back to Venice. Don't miss doing this tour!

Yelp
Even if you don't make it here for an actual performance, I would suggesting visiting just to see the interior, which is spectacular. Everything inside is new (thanks to the arson back in the 90's), but it's been wonderfully rebuilt and the acoustics are still impressive. And don't think that to attend a performance it'll have to be an opera. I bought a ticket to the symphony - a 5pm show - for €60 (and you can get them cheaper than that). It's a wonderful way to end a day in Venice, and not be too wiped out for the next morning.

Yelp
Beautiful opera house. It was our first opera, La Boheme, and we were thrilled with the performance, the music, and the theater house. For us non-Italian speakers they had a screen at the top of the stage unobtrusively set with subtitles which made it all the better. They also had Italian subtitles. It has the bones of its 14th century origin but with a delightful 19th century overlay.

Yelp
So unprofessional of the theater to not refund a ticket for a cancelled performance. Voucher is no good for someone who is located on the other continent. What a way to attract tourists back! Very disappointed!

Yelp
Well overpriced for what you get. Subpar, and not for serious fans of the Opera. We have seen opera all over the world, and this was the first we considered actually leaving from in the middle the performance was so bad. It's as if none of the real performers showed up, and the custodial staff held fast to the old mantra "The show must go on" and performed in their places. Worth a tour, but not the price of a ticket. I give it two stars out of pity, because Operas have enough trouble staying open as it is.

Yelp
You have to go! Even though rebuilt in early 2000s, building is so amazing. Performance was also incredible.
