Teatro Sannita Pietrabbondante

Incredible to think this was built so long ago and up here. Standing on the stage where actors performed over 2000 years ago is wonderful.

The Sanctuary of Pietrabbondante is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Molise, and a place that truly takes you back in time. Set high in the hills with sweeping views of the surrounding valleys, the site combines history, nature, and a sense of awe. The main highlight is the well-preserved Samnite theater and temple complex, dating back to the 2nd century BC. The stone seating, built with remarkable craftsmanship, is still intact, and standing on the stage looking out over the mountains gives you a powerful sense of what ancient life and rituals must have felt like. Unlike many larger Italian sites, Pietrabbondante is quiet and uncrowded.

Very particular place, we enjoyed it and the story is very impressive. Get a guide to get the most out of it.

Impressive and interesting ancient site. It is rather small but still fantastic to see, especially if you appreciate history and culture. Kid friendly and convenient big parking area.

Breathtaking ancient site with a theater and two temples. The view is amazing on the valley of the river Verrino. The scene is awesome and atmosphere takes you back to the ancient times of Sannitis. Must see

I had a European guest with me. We had just attended a conference in Agnone on promotion of tourism in the Molise. On our way back to the hotel, I decided to stop at Pietrabbondante to see the Teatro Sannita. It was Monday. It is closed on Monday. The problem is that in a remote area like this, the Monday closing hours can be devastating for our guests. They will not come back. And here I had a guest who had actually extended his stay because he found the Molise so fascinating. But not very practical for tour guides and for guests from afar.

Mesmerising ambience...you can just shut your eyes and go back to the sounds and scene of that era. So peaceful now amid the beautiful countryside between the mountains.
