In 1998, the government of Montevideo started a major reconstruction of the theatre, which included two columns designed by Philippe Starck. The reconstruction was completed in 2004 with the re-opening taking place in August of that year.[3] Acoustic studies of the rehabilitation project was entrusted to Jerome Falala of the French studio Avel Acoustique.

It is a public service committed to the artistic, cultural, urban and touristic development of Montevideo. Its main tool is the artistic fact, seeking to generate a classic and innovative repertoire at the same time, which aims at diverse audiences. With a program that gives an account of the relationship with history, showing the ability to integrate the local with the global; promotes new talents in dance, music and theater. The National Comedy, Philharmonic Orchestra of Montevideo and the Montevideo Symphonic Band are its stable cast. As allies that build part of the best history of this theater, we find the Montevideo Symphonic Band, Montevideo Dance Cycle, JazzTour, among others

We grabbed last minute tickets for a great concert at this beautiful theatre in Montevideo. We were just passing through the city, but felt very privileged to play a small part in its culture!

Beautiful building with amazing architecture and decorative details. The blending of modern additions to the classic architecture is seamless. Includes a museum as well as photos and sculptures throughout. A lovely, bright cafe that I will come back to enjoy at another time. The tour guide was excellent in spite of me being a beginning Spanish learner and understanding only 5% of what she said. LOL. They DO offer tours in English, as well. Highly recommended.

It’s a oldest theater in South America. They have guide tour by Spanish, Portuguese, and English. As of May, 2023, it starts from 16:00, and duration is around 1 hour. You can buy the ticket without booking. In our case, only 5 people joined English tour. But the guide explained theater history and characters with fluent English. If you go Montevideo, Solis theater is one of the best option.
