The Cheapest Places You Can Fly to From All 50 States

"In October the most affordable domestic trip is a short hop to Fairbanks ($163) while the cheapest international option is to Vancouver ($448). Other months show similar patterns: frequent low-cost domestic service to Fairbanks and variable international deals largely to Canadian and Pacific destinations." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. Having watched Ice Airport Alaska, it was so cool to finally get the chance to fly into this airport. Awesome just looking at the scenery as you approaching the airport. Nice layout of the airport. Lots of displays of native animal info and history. Really cool history images of the airport as you walk to the car rental. Left mom with the luggage while I went to get the rental car. The pickup for the cruises is by baggage claim. First door as you are coming into the airport. Good info booth by baggage claim as well. Got some good books and info. Everyone was nice. Absolutely worth it. Fly into this airport at least once. And tour the airport too outside.

Google
First time here and Alaska air was great! Airport clean, Starbucks had adorable products and cool selection of items... happy I got my birthday cup. Airport staff and vibe friendly and we loved the quick baggage claim. 👍🤗

Google
Smaller airport so itvis easy to check in. The lines through tsa took 15 minutes not to bad. Down the b concourse there are only two restaurants and one that is a sit down called the denali sports the other is a hot dog, brat, reindeer sausage shop.

Christopher Clark

Google
Beautiful airport. Very modern and clean. Very organized with good signage. Plane spotting area inside TSA . Go to Starbucks and find the stairs behind to go upstairs to museum and views bf area. Lots of seating too. If you have a layover waiting for your bus to Seward get a uber to the Seaplane port 5 min from the airport then go to Windsor Park north side of the airfield to see the views and plane spot.

Google
Great airport! Well lit. Clean. Easy to access from the drop off curb. Unlike other airports, Ubers can drop off right at the check in desk.

Google
I go through this airport frequently. Love the busy but quiet atmosphere, the unique state and cultural décor, and the ease of navigation through the terminals. Super excited about the new Pizza Hut in C Concourse - another option besides McDonald’s if you’re headed out to the bush. Clean bathrooms, a fast walkway to C Concourse, bears to greet you before TSA, and a moose once you’re through the screening!

Amanda Whiting

Google
A small but beautiful airport with many nods to local culture. I especially appreciated the case of items not allowed through TSA - it had scrimshaw, ulu’s, etc. The huge bear compared to other sized bears was wild. So great! The flights were easy. Fun decor. Easy to navigate.

Google
Nice clean and good maintained Airport. Cart rental is too expensive. $8.00 US and returning cart back to cart station reward you a coin of 0.25. Don’t get the point

Yelp
Small but I'm able to get through security and my gate with no problems. Only thing that sucks I had to get a connecting flight but not their fault. While looking around all the shops and eateries were very clean. Airport staff was polite and professional Delta staff and airport staff were nice as well. Seams like there is always a smile on their face Made my traveling experience easy going. I had to transfer to another plane to get to this one. Hopefully I can find a direct flight when I come back

Yelp
We landed in the early evening and walked around a bit before our local connection on Kenai Aviation. This airport is the busiest airport in Alaska, and has a large number of flights from international destinations. We were, however, disappointed that most of the shops were already closed by 6:30 pm. Our return flight to the lower 48 was scheduled for early morning (2 am), so we arrived at 8 pm via our hotel's shuttle. Again, we were too early to check our baggage, so we ended up at a restaurant for a drink and a bite to eat and people watch. It was disappointing to find most shops closed, especially if you wanted a last minute souvenir from Alaska. Since I require a wheelchair, we found out that attendants go home at 11 pm, even though this airport is busy all night long, with many flights scheduled through the night. Overall, check in at Alaska Airlines went smoothly and security went smoothly because I was in a wheelchair, and my husband was able to push me in the wheelchair all the way to the gate. I loved the decor in the airport - Alaska touched my soul in a way few places do so I was happy to see the life sized polar and brown bears on display. An artic Fox display was also impressive. Hopefully life will bring me back to Alaska, and I will be able to visit the airport again.

Yelp
Kind of dated international airport. Check in area was easy to navigate. PreCheck was quiet when I went through although there is no Clear option. Only an Alaska lounge so if you're flying one of the big three you're limited with areas to work (none) and dining, which wasn't too bad. Gate areas have limited charging but plenty of worn seating.
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
Clean airport. Baggage check in was very nice and was joking with customers. TSA was very polite and moved people through quickly. Very efficient in the running. I would have expected more businesses to be open late at night with the amount of flights going to the 48 over night. All in all, a very comfortable airport.
google avatar

Diana G.

Yelp
Small airport, but you can find everything you need. We departed from this airport and everything went pretty smoothly. TSA was fast. They have plenty of seating and restaurants open late as a lot of flights fly out very late from this airport. Their are areas where you can charge your phone. It is clean and easy to navigate. The car rental is on site.

Yelp
Huge airport, but easy to navigate. Unfortunately, there weren't a lot of dining options that early in the morning. 2025 #11

Yelp
4 stars This airport is small, but mighty! As soon as I got out of the gate, I was blown away by the views of snow-covered mountains. I believe they are the Chugach Mountains. The airport wasn't too crowded and there were plenty of stores inside that sold souvenirs & books by Alaskan authors that most would not be able to get anywhere else. I ended up purchasing Alaska-themed stickers, guitar pick, magnet, & a sweater. Prices were extremely reasonable for an airport. Too bad my luggage is non-extendable :( but that just means I have to come back in the future :)

Yelp
This airport was one of the easiest and most pleasant airport experiences I've had in a long time. To begin with, you exit in to the terminals and immediately feel like you're in Alaska. From artwork to the lighting, it just made me so happy to land, late at night and feel welcomed. Secondly, it's very easy to navigate and the rental car counters and the pick up for cars are conveniently located right downstairs from baggage claim. No shuttles or long waits which made it easy picking up and returning our car. Flying in, you get views galore and begin your Alaska experience. It's also a close drive to the downtown and many nearby hotels have shuttles running well after midnight during the busy travel season. Truly a pleasant travel experience both arriving and departing.

Yelp
Cleanliness: 5 Variety of shops: 5 Variety of restaurants: 5 TSA: 5 Check in: 5 Baggage claim: 5 We flew into the Anchorage Airport thissummer, so we could visit the surrounding attractions. The airport is an average size airport and provides many flights to domestic and international destinations. Everything from the ticketing, check in, TSA, and Baggage claim was very easy and stree free. This airport has plenty of options when it comes to shopping and restaurants. I'm sure that we will fly through this airport in the near future.

Yelp
'Ello Chaps, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is the state's busiest airport, seeing approximately six million visitors each year. That's busy for Alaska, but slow for someone from a major city. However, that's also what makes this airport standout. There is great design and aesthetics throughout the airport that truly make you feel like you're in Alaska. The art on display and throughout the terminal is fantastic. There's a fun kids play area and a small library (though a bit more care could be given to the condition of this little control tower library). Also, if you have time to spare, head upstairs to the Observation area. Great views. There are a variety of restaurants and shops pre-security and post-security, although the prices are excessively high. 49th State Brewery charged $20 for a basic glass of wine; even for Alaska and airport standards this is excessive. Another complaint is the rental car companies who act like predators in their process, trying to take advantage of customers who may not know any better, attempting to get a 'yes' on every single upcharge. Many people have personal car insurance and credit cards who provide insurance coverages for rental cars. These rental car companies already have a person's information on file before arrival, so what should be a 90 second process becomes a 10-15 check in process per person, which is the last thing you want to deal with when you've landed after 12 hours of travel at 1 a.m. As a "non corporate" location, the car rental companies seem to make up rules willy nilly that not only counter corporate rules and policies, but further aggravate the customer who rents vehicles on a near weekly basis. Whether you're in the airport or out in the perimeter, the plane views are in a league of their own. The airport has a number of publicly-accessible spaces where you can see some of the largest aircraft in the world fly in and out with a steady flow of 747s, 330s, 777s, and more. Overall I give Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport 4 Stars out of 5. It's very accessible, clean, and just a cool airport, but the excessive cost of goods and services and predatory practices from the rental car companies leave something to be desired.

Yelp
I've been doing a lot of traveling lately, and I gotta say...airports are not my favorite place to be. But as far as airports go, Ted Stevens is a pretty good one! I had never been to Anchorage before, so I was a little surprised at how big this place was. It was also bright, clean, cheerful, and had tons of amenities. Including a Grundéns shop right in the terminal! (If you're not familiar, Grundéns is pretty much the preferred rain gear of fishers, boaters, and most outdoorsy people - especially in wet and rugged Alaska.) There was also a large outpost of popular local 49th State Brewing, and several other restaurants. The trip to the rental car area was a long one, but was well-signed, and the process itself was one of the friendliest and most efficient ever. The rental car manager even gave me his card and said to text if there were any problems. This is quite the contrast to my last rental car experience in SLO, where there was zero response when I had a problem with my car. The return trip to get home was equally easy. I may not find myself in Anchorage very often, but it's nice to know there's an easy-to-navigate airport to look forward to!

Yelp
This is a cool little airport with some great restaurants and bars. I plan to grab some food before we fly out.
google avatar

Yelp
Our group joked as we all walked in we finally saw a bear! They have a few taxidermy animals in cases you can look at, and many stores for shipping. They have breweries, eateries and of course Starbucks. We all stopped by at Starbucks, and a few of the other locations for some food and a quick bite before the flight. Their process of security is very quick and we didn't have to wait long. The staff is friendly and professional

Honest Reviewer ..

Yelp
Really happy with my experience in this airport, very modern, but with Alaskan charm. Lots of shopping and dining options, security wasn't terrible on a Saturday. Flew in on United late at night on a Saturday and out on United late afternoon the following Saturday. Only wish that it was easier to find where to go for Lyft! Not super clearly marked. I will not be disappointed to fly in here again
google avatar

Matt U.

Yelp
We've only flown in and out of here one time, but I can tell you everybody was impressed with the layout, decor, and the sheer number of moose that adorned the place! As with many things in Alaska, I appreciate that they really embrace what they are and where they are! The only way that this could get better is if they added one additional statue of an Alaskan animal species to the place each year. Keep up the good work!
google avatar

Mabelle T.

Yelp
Saw a moose for the first time in May 2022 was really cool. Visited for the second time in February 2024 and I'm glad to see that the moose decided to stay. Looking forward to seeing the moose again for the next visit. Will keep you posted :)

Yelp
Smaller airport but easy enough to get ticketed, baggage and through security. Appears to be clean too. Signage for B concourse is divided so be aware of your gate number. Could use a little more prominence of digital signage for flight information.
google avatar

Cherie O.

Yelp
Bit of a trial checking in as we are used to being at least three hours ahead of departure time. So the hallway was so crowded and no one knew where to go but eventually we figured it out. Then told we could not get our baggage tags until 7:30pm. Time was 7:16. We waited then headed straight for drinks and supper. Our daughter had told us that the Forty Niners served great beers. She was right! We both got the Nitros which were similar to Guiness. I got the halibut and chips and hubby got the elk burger. Both definitely delicious and not what we can get in our home town. Off we went for the first part of our long sojourn home.

Yelp
ANC Not our final stop but when we arrived around 1:30a for a long layover the airport was busy. Our continuing next departure gate was right across McDonald's so we grabbed a quick bite to eat. Unfortunately, they don't serve breakfast so I had a McDouble and fries at 2:30a in the morning. The airport is named after Senator Ted Stevens who served as Alaska's Senator from 1968 to 2009. He was also a WWII pilot. There is a nice art gallery located in the mezzanine of Concourse C. This airport never sleeps... open 24 hours, year round. Many of the shops are Alaskan-themed merchandise offering many cool unique souvenirs. Unfortunately, I am unable to comment about parking, TSA, baggage claim or car rental since this was only a connecting flight stop. Review #3122
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
It's an airport; you know what you're getting. If I have a reasonable experience at security with minimal hassles, a place to buy a cold drink and a comfortable place to sit and watch the planes take off and land while I wait for my flight, I'm generally fairly happy. This airport checked all those boxes

Logan G.

Yelp
Terrible check in line at 16:41, August 2nd. Terrible experience. Great design but terrible management of lines.
google avatar

Stacy P.

Yelp
ANC is one of my favorite airports to fly into and one I always make sure to get a window seat for, because the approach gives you some amazing views when mother nature is playing nice. Highlights: + TSA precheck is available here + Airport is relatively small, so walking from check in to security to gate is relatively easy an. + This airport operates 24 hours, so as long as your pilot doesn't time out, they won't cancel due to operations being ceased +/- Not the greatest airport to try and find something to eat if you have food allergies, especially gluten +/- - Transportation, especially if you've arranged with your cruise is right next to baggage claim, and it is relatively easy to get a taxi or Uber during the day, though expect price surges on Uber during the early early morning flights (i.e. 1:20 am ) + There is a Delta Sky Club or Alaska Airlines lounge if you have proper access, else the are the typical seats at the gates + Lots of interesting picture opportunities, from the giant moose , sea plane, to other wildlife and other art displays + If you're into plane spotting, this is a good airport to see some of the larger cargo planes or cargo plane you might not typically see in other airports. From the anc plane spotting website, the places to see the planes are from the " pullouts along Postmark Drive, Northern Lights Boulevard, and Pt. Woronzof Road for the best views of aircraft arriving and departing. Another great location for viewing is along the fence at the end of South Airpark Place."
google avatar

Howard L.

Yelp
ANC is a scenic airport with a mountain range in view from the terminal building. I've come through here twice, both times for an Alaskan cruise. The first time, Princess Cruise Lines stuck it to us with a 7 hour wait for our return flight home, so relatively speaking, I've spent a lot of time per trip here! There is also a laid back atmosphere here appropriate for being out in the independent and uncrowded frontier of our country.
google avatar

David O.

Yelp
American Airlines overwhelmed with several planes leaving. Lines long, several self-check baggage machines were not working. Then after waiting in two lines for lengthy time was told that our flight couldn't be processed until all passengers on first plane were processed as they only had one baggage ramp and baggage would be misdirected. So don't be prepared and show up early thinking you are doing good!
google avatar

Michelle A.

Yelp
This would be the 2nd time here or 4 round trips. The airport is nice and the car rental place and parking lot are attached. The decor has stuffed taxidermy consisting of bears, moose, and musk on. So that's pretty cool. The airport is fairly small and easy to navigate around. For some reason, it seems arriving flights from Chicago and Minneapolis are delayed here. Must be the turbulence over Canada. I had a Halibut sandwich with fries by gate B. I also bought some last souvenir gifts of a water globe with bears and a state license plate mug. Until next time!
google avatar

Jerry W.

Yelp
Small Airport with 2 main terminals B & C. Terminal C is appears to be Alaska Airline... everyone else is in B. If you look out to the Apron, you can see huge cargo 747's at stands... its simply amazing. Both terminals offer power on the walls... but I did not see any at seat power in Terminal C. What makes this a 3 star airport is the wifi... the free wifi constantly drops connection
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
I like this airport! Right after you get off the plane you have a great view of the mountains. The decor inside is perfect for the location with wildlife and a cool plane inside. It is a small airport and easy to navigate. Security lines are short and move fast. Car rental center is next door (no shuttle needed) and there is a train that comes to the airport (no idea where it goes!). My only complain is the lack of food options in the morning. The only time I would eat at this airport is before a flight home or to get food to take on the plane home. However before 11am your only option is McDonalds.
google avatar

Jasmine D.

Yelp
Flew out of Anchorage back to LAX after a week long cruise. When we were checking in, we heard people saying their flights were delayed 3 days and were finally flying out that day. Unfortunately, we experienced a similar situation but not nearly as bad/long. Our flight was delayed twice and then cancelled due to staffing issues grrrrr! The only person working for United Airlines that was helpful and knew what she was doing was a supervisor. Poor lady was there in the morning when she checked us in and was still there working when we found out our flight was cancelled around 11pm! She assisted us in getting meal vouchers and tried to get us rebooked onto another flight, dealt with being yelled at by other customers, and had to teach her fellow coworkers what to do. We were able to get a flight the next morning at 530, but we ended up taking 3 flights to get to LAX instead of our original booking that had only one layover. The airport itself was fine. Restrooms were clean, lots of seating at the terminal gates, gift shops for snacks and souvenirs, several food options including Cinnabon, McDonald's, and a sit down seafood restaurant.
google avatar

Peter P.

Yelp
Easy to navigate and the main airport for alaska. everything is indoors obviously with the weather but clean. rental car center easy and fast to find. Ride pick up along with baggage claim was easy to get to. Its not a big airport but for what it is its solid
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
This was such a cool airport! Bass Pro meets public air transportation, with stuffed animals, shops, wooden frame log cabin like ceilings and walls, and fun visual props everywhere. Landing here it looks like a very small airport, and it's not really large, was almost a bit fearful the runway wouldn't be long enough for our plane to stop, tho we did and taxing to the terminal was minutes away. Baggage claim was fast, yet crowded, it's not a large area, especially when there is more than one plane full of visitors trying to get their baggage. Really was a beautiful airport, very clean and well kept.
google avatar

Daniel A.

Yelp
Small airport. Few options to eat and drink. Parking isn't bad but getting help for missing items or issues is a bit of a hassle.
google avatar

Jo L.

Yelp
Everything! Easy check in, good directions, lots of food choices! Security was great, they were very nice and polite.

Yelp
This airport is Alaska AF. It is named after long-time US Senator from Alaska, Ted Stevens. It dates back to 1951 and covers 4,000 acres. It has 2 terminals, North (Concourse A, Concourse B, and Concourse C) and South (International Terminal), 3 runways and a helipad. The Alaska Sports Hall of Fame is located in the lower level of the South Terminal. It is small but nice. I would definitely check it out if you have time to kill. Fun facts: The airport is less than 9.5 hours from 90% of the industrial world and is second in the Nation for landed weight of cargo aircraft. They have stuffed wild game all through the airport and wildlife related art throughout the terminal. They are currently having construction going on in front of the departures area, so you have to walk across a little plywood bridge to get to the sidewalk to into the terminal after being dropped off. The airport is very clean, but could use some dining options. They have a few Denali Pretzels, A couple of Humpy's, a McDonald's and of course a Starbucks. What made the limited dining options even worse, was that most of them were closed when I was catching my night flight around 8PM. That really sucked. They have charging stations outside off most of the gates and the chairs at the gates are relatively comfortable. As most airports now do, this airport has free wifi. They also offer FREE COVID-19 vaccinations for anyone over the age of 12 right at the airport. Other of the airport's amenities include a military lounge, ATMs, a barbershop, nursing rooms, pet relief areas (1 post-security and 3 outside), and a nursery. So, I suggest planning on eating before you come here, especially if it is early morning or evening. I really like this airport. It is like a museum inside of an airport. It could use a little updating, but it is not too far behind most other airports.
google avatar

Veena P.

Yelp
It's a small but beautiful airport. The American Airlines staff was very friendly and pleasant to talk to. We walked around the airport and saw some really nice exhibits.
google avatar

Paige C.

Yelp
I have flown into this airport many times. It's such a beautiful airport with so many things to look at. They have a great bar to sit and have a cold Alaskan beer as well with great food. When I flew in back in 2014 my luggage got lost in Ft worth. Apparently it didn't make the flight. So after filing a lost luggage report I pretty much thought I was screwed. After 2 days I got a call saying they were delivering my luggage to my condo. I love all the stuffed animals they have throughout the airport. Especially the huge grizzly bear near the United airline checkin. It's a very nice airport
google avatar

Adam D.

Yelp
Very clean, quiet and modern airport with typically fast security checkpoints and easy bag drops. The wifi isn't the fastest, but it is free. The restaurant options could be better. There simply are not a lot of places to eat, perhaps due in part to how late flights typically arrive and depart Anchorage. The McDonald's is always packed and there is at least one sit down restaurant that's usually open late, but I can't speak for the food. If you have some down time, enjoy checking out the Native and wildlife exhibits. Fascinating stuff. Daily parking is very affordable, around $10/day last I knew.
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
This airport is dope inside and out. I love the art look of the wild animals, and nature of the Ted Stevens Anchorage Airport. We stopped to get something to eat at Smash Burgers. They have good restaurants and bars here. Good places to do souvieneer shopping. We flew outside of Orange County California with American Airlines that got us here safely. I wanted to use my Alaska Airlines package for the whole trip, but everything came out fine. Our luggage was ok, they have the best security and process here. Very nice airport.
google avatar

Scott K.

Yelp
As I'v traveled the past few years it seems every airport in the country is having renovations. I didn't notice any here what a breath of fresh air. Pretty simple and straight forward navigating around. TSA pre check was open bright and early something not done at most airports. Restrooms were clean and a to of interesting mounted wildlife throughout. They had enough food and beverage options which were also open early. Zero complaints.
google avatar

Shardul T.

Yelp
Cute little airport, very friendly staff. I loved the beautiful views in Winter! There is ample of space for hanging out here!
google avatar

Trevor C.

Yelp
Definitely a smooth transition through the airport. Easy pick up and drop off, rental cars are just a short walk, and lots of last minute food and gift choices.
google avatar

Dayna G.

Yelp
Airport is a bit small, but there are usually places that are open (food, drinks, small trinkets to buy). I would say that places close a bit early (like most of Alaska) so don't expect a lot of places after 5-6pm. Lots of seats with quieter areas to sleep in case of a long layover. My go-tos for food/coffee are Starbucks and McDonald's in terminal C.
google avatar

Brandee L.

Yelp
This airport is convenient. Not big, but just right. You don't have to rush over and be here 3hrs before you depart because it's not as busy as JFK, SEATAC, ORD, etc. Check-in is a breeze for the most part, unless you are flying internationally or need special accommodations, then sure..give yourself an extra hour than usual. Security is good..easy. I don't really recommend the restaurants here because they are over priced for mediocre food. The shops are basically necessities and convenience shops, not really high end retail like other airports. The lounges are ok. The gates are easy to get to without having to take a tram..those do not exist here ( no worries). For an international airport...Ted Stevens is by far..the less stress of the major ones in the lower 48's. If you are flying Alaska Air..it's easy processing. Other airlines..you might want to give yourself extra check in time because the agents are not conveniently at the counter ALL the time. For the most part, this is a very chilled layed back international airport.
google avatar

Jacqueline C.

Yelp
Love this airport! It's so easy to navigate. Breathtaking views from every window. Everyone is so welcoming. The history here is displayed as you walk around the airport. So cool to see. Alaska was one for the books.
google avatar

Yuko H.

Yelp
Arriving at ANC mid day, the view from airplane window was amazing. I normally don't like a window seat but I chose right side to see this view. Great introduction to beautiful state 49. Departing or landing at night also bring some advantage. I arrived early enough and found an area where I can spot many cargo planes. While most of the Queen of the skies retired as PAX, cargo carriers still operate B747-8F or older -400F. If you like this aircraft type, night time is a perfect time to be to spot as many as you want. Cargo plane stops here for refueling. As this airport operates 24/7, restaurants open late too. Lastly, they have a perfect spot for selfies. Moose is at the terminal waiting for you to take pictures in case you couldn't spot real one while in Alaska. I saw real moose twice but still took a selfie with this airport moose, lol
google avatar

Tara R.

Yelp
This was one of my least favorite airports, mainly because I had an early flight and most things don't open until way later. The only options near my gate were Starbucks (which had a huge line) and the little convenient stores that have a little of everything. If you are flying out of Anchorage in the AM, don't plan to have your pre-flight beverages like you do in most other airports.
google avatar

Irene G.

Yelp
No complaints. There was statues of nature and a display depicting the northern lights that were very pretty. It was a pretty simple airport but definitely gave me the Alaskan feel.
google avatar

Alexander B.

Yelp
It's a really nice airport! Relatively small but with all the conveniences, easy parking, and not very crowded as you'd imagine. There are 24/7 restaurants here + TSA pre check/Global Entry office if you need an appointment! The whole airport is like an Alaska museum with local wildlife statues and native Alaskan history posters.
google avatar

Todd P.

Yelp
We got in late, so the biggest issue for us was trying to find where the taxi stand was. There was some signage, but not enough to really help us out. And late at night, there were very few people to ask for help. We ended up wandering through the airport for several minutes before we finally found the cab stand. We initially were going to use Uber, but at that point late at night, Uber was ridiculously expensive. Therefore we went by cab.

We flew into Anchorage at 2am. We are not 'frequent' flyers. When you arrive early in the morning after a long day of travel, you really want smooth sailing! We found it here. This airport was bustling even at that crazy hour but the airport was clean and the staff we encountered were friendly.
