The 21 Best Cafés in Paris

"The fashion set descends on this cozy coffee bar throughout the day (offices for Kenzo and Céline are nearby). Owner Nicolas Clerc works primarily with Scandinavian coffee roasters, offering excellent filter coffee, milk-based drinks, and lovely teas for the non-Java contingent. Computers are verboten so the energy is conversational—but not so roaring that you can't read, write, or sit and people-watch. It's is an excellent spot for a solo outing, friendly catch-up, or client meeting (they'll be impressed by your coffee prowess)." - Lindsey Tramuta

I always end up PARIS trip here at Telescope cafe for more than 6-7 years already before catching the flight back to our home town :) his coffee always one of the best :) apart from some complain here I think i still definitely visit here next time when i come to Paris :)

Google
Great coffee and lovely atmosphere. Such a cozy place close to the park. Definitely try speciality coffee here

Google
Really delicious coffee and the best banana bread with a slice of salted butter:))

Google
Great little cafe, this is the spot to go to for specialty brews. The baristas were very nice and informative, chill vibe ㅤᵕ̈

Google
Coffee is not nearly as good as advertised by the reviews I read. The bald rude Barista indeed is the mood ruiner. We had our coffee to go and took out literal minute to check our maps. And he rudely shows us our way out because we had our coffee to go. Definitely will not come back and I am sure the bad reputation will eventually catch up to them. *POST EDITED IN RESPONSE TO THE OWNER'S REPLY* It's almost hilarious how the owner replied with lies and I think he just making stuff up to justify his rudeness. We certainly did not stayed for more than 5 minutes after we got our coffee just to figure out where to go next before you throw us out. My wife came to get one take away coffee as mentioned before and I just happened to be there to pay for it, which is I think its a crime in this cafe. We most definitely did not mock you or anyone. We did not even respond in person to your behavior towards us. I came to this cafe unbiased, we did not read the reviews beforehand. But after I read many reviews, I am not the only one who feels this way. I can suggest potential customers to skip the hospitality offered, you can get much better coffee and overall experience from so many other cafe in Paris.

Google
The best specialty coffee in Paris for sure! Unfortunately it’s also 5.4€ for a flat white and no option on the menu for a cappuccino! The staff was super friendly and helpful with impeccable English skills. The decor is super minimalist and beautiful! I highly recommend this place if you can afford it

Google
Got a Matcha latte! Matcha was great and the vibes of the cafe were nice. They also have a selection for brunch and it’s good for groups right in a popular area in Paris near the Louve

Google
I came here for coffee and breakfast once four years ago. And now I come every single time I am in Paris. The music is great. The service is amazing. The food and the coffee are killer… If you’re in the area come in and get the banana bread with butter… Salted butter and or I would also recommend getting a toasted baguette with cheese and butter and a side of jam. Don’t forget the filter there is a massive menu to choose from.

Yelp
Telescope is a clean, minimalist, small shop with limited seating. The coffee was good, the server was very nice, and their pastries looked yummy. I ordered a macchiato while my hubby ordered a pour over. The coffee was on the bitter side for me and not smooth at all.
google avatar

Yelp
Wished I read all the bad reviews about this place on Google before we went! Coffee was ok but overpriced compared to a few of the better coffee places around. Service was atrocious. They have a one drink per person policy that's not written anywhere but heavily enforced. Two of us sat down and ordered coffee - a friend sat down towards the end as we were finishing our last sip and the server demanded that she order a drink or step outside. She decided to step outside.

Yelp
One day 16 of no bad coffee in Europe... Cappuccino in Paris at Telescope. Teeny tiny tables that double as stools (?!). Delicious. Service on par with Paris (slow). Outside. They speak English but cappuccino is cappuccino in every language.

Sabrina A.

Yelp
The cafe itself is very minimally designed. It was cool to see but a bit uncomfortable to just sit down. The staff weren't that amicable but the cappuccino itself was good.

Yelp
Good third wave coffee. Highly recommend. This is a family owned spot so you might have to wait a few, but it is worth it and the people are very nice. Coffee is up to third wave standards. Sit outside at one of the little tables if you can, the vibe in the small alley the shop is in is very nice.

Yelp
The fact that Télescope uses fresh milk instead of UHT like most cafés in Paris, makes this our morning regular when visiting. Friendly staff are serious about coffee. Good spot for fussy Australians in search of a flat white. Great location too!

Yelp
Various magazine shout-outs and Internet lists pointed us to Télescope for coffee on our way to the Louvre. We stopped by on a quiet Wednesday morning and had a great experience. The barista was incredibly friendly and seemed to be native English speaker, so he took pity on our terrible French and started with English. They (unfortunately) hadn't received/made their main bread orders yet, so we each got a croissant with jam, and some coffee. A delicious start to the day.

Yelp
We serendipitously chanced upon this cute little cafe while waiting for a nearby lunch spot to open up. Being big independent coffee shop fans, we were looking forward to checking out some local spots. It was fairly crowded when we walked in, and we luckily snagged the second to last table available. It is not a very big place, with only about seven tables to accompany various group sizes. I ordered a genmaicha tea and my BF ordered an espresso. The barista pulled the most perfect espresso. The grind was just right, so it was neither burn/bitter nor watery or weak. There was a definite crema. My tea was brewed perfectly as well. The baristas here are very friendly and speak English. They also serve pastries, which look divine. I would definitely come back to Télescope anytime I'm in Paris. Very convenient to the Jardin du Palais Royal and the Musée du Louvre.

Yelp
Terrible service. Obviously not interested in creating a loyal customer base. There's more good coffee in the world.

Yelp

Yelp
Getteaux de chocolat with fresh cream and latte. Best cafe experience of my life, I died! I have given 5 star ratings to less than 10 restaurants/cafes in the world, this being one of them. I've never had a desert and coffee combo taste so good. Do yourself the biggest favor and stop by here.
google avatar

Yelp
Down an unassuming alley and with no obvious signage, this petit hipster cafe is pretty easy to miss. But perhaps that is the intention, because the smug aloofness here does not exactly make Telescope the most welcoming place for the uncool to enjoy a cup of coffee. Ordered a Café Crème (4 euros) on this visit, which was expertly prepared. The bespectacled barista -- who speaks English, by the way -- took obvious care and much pride in his work. It looked absolutely perfect. However, I found the coffee a bit too sharp on the palate. It also had an exotic earthiness to it. It wasn't bad, per se; it just wasn't what I was used to. In the end, the flavor just wasn't my style. Good coffee is pretty hard to find in Paris. And even though I have no doubt that this is one of the better places, I just thought it was OK.

Yelp
I had bookmarked this location before I set off to Paris. I don't quite remember where I read about it, but I had heard that they serve up some of the best coffee in town, so I definitely had to check it out. I got a latte and banana bread, both of which were divine. The latte was super creamy and well-crafted, definitely the creamiest I've had thus far. Banana bread is good..nothing spectacular. Seating at the location is very small. I thiiink there is a downstairs but I'm not sure. this definitely seems like a spot the locals go to. I was there alone when I arrived, but soon after a bunch of people walked in. A definitely a must-have for all my fellow coffee lovers!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here a few times and I get it. It's casual...strictly casual, which can be difficult to pull off, especially in the "café culture" of Paris. Yodda: "There is no try, only do". So yeah, Telescope do. Plus, they pay attention to the coffee. This little area between Palais Royal and rue de opera contains within a 3 minute walking radius some of my favorites: + Verjus now serving sandwiches for lunch now and the Bakesale Betty IS that good...check + Telescope for a shot of caffeine...check + Juveniles for wine (yeah I had the rosé - so what)...check + Nap...check This is my idea of a high quality Friday afternoon.

Yelp
Today the owner refused to serve me because I left a bad review describing the poor experience I had a few weeks ago. Think twice before leaving under 5 stars. Yelp
I am from Seattle & this is fresh good coffee. It's like Vivace meets Analog. Strong smooth.Drink the espresso shots before they cool. The cappuccino is smooth Dry. The sugar is a little molasses aftertaste. Not my taste but others like it. The Baristas are Very genuine & have good dry humor with all countries guests. Oh & the coffee really works!

Yelp
Third wave coffee par excellence. These guys are deeply passionate about the craft, and clearly have a strong local following as well. We had such a long conversation about coffee, the latte I had ordered got cold. Without asking, and mid-sentence, he replaced it with a new one (no charge). Love that.
google avatar

Yelp
Was recommended to me and I can't say enough how disappointed I was... Hard to find, the place was small, the one staff on hand was rude, it was not busy but we still left without getting an espresso. Oh, and did I mentioned it closed early? Why post hours if you are not going to adhere to them???? Sadly, the brasserie around the corner was a better place to get some caffeine. Grrrrrr
google avatar

Kimberly P.

Yelp
What a great find around Palais Royale! The owner is so kind and friendly. Additionally, the staff speaks English (it only took 5 seconds for the owner to take pity on my pathetic French). The pastries and the coffee are absolute perfection and accentuated by the warmth of the sun pouring through the open French windows. Definitely worth a second/multiple visits.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a very lovely café in rue Villedo, a little street where also another favorite of mine (Nest) is located. Surrounded by Asian style restaurants en sushi bars, Telescope is a welcome change for the other places in this hood. Here you can come, not for sushi or noodles, but for one of the best coffees in Paris. They serve an excellent cappuccino which is perfect to enjoy with a nice fresh croissant and a magazine. There are not incredibly many seats inside, it is just a small café, but you might be lucky to find a spot, since this is not the busiest street and only the hipsters know about this place ;) The staff does not really try to speak English to you, but since you will probably only order a coffee and not chat about work or something, I don't think the non-frenchies will think of this as a problem.
google avatar

Faye B.

Yelp
A hip, cool cafe in the center of Paris offering up flawless coffee by a barista who knows his skill. The service was wonderful - the friendly owner made me feel instantly welcome. Whilst he is a Parisian himself he was even joking that Paris would be the perfect city if it weren't for the Parisians! The granola was simply perfect, offering a custom blend of Emperor Norton sprinkled over a big dollop of yogurt and sweetened with a little jam and served in the cutest glass ramekin. The only downside if there would have to be one would be the small size of the cafe however in my view it only adds to the intimate, cozy experience.
google avatar

Andy K.

Yelp
A quiet unassuming spot with excellent brew and a hipster chic vibe straight out of Brooklyn. Not sure if the jam or croissants that I ordered were homemade but they definitely were top notch.
google avatar

Henrik S.

Yelp
This place is a tiny little gem. Amazing coffee, super nice service and THE GREATEST brownies in the world. I consider myself a brownie conoseuur and must say this is the best of all time.
google avatar

Sam O.

Yelp
Another popular coffee spot in Paris wgere you can get pretty good cup of brewed coffee or flat white. They do have a small selection of pastries too. The place is very close to the Grand Palais and it is a great place to have a coffee after a long stroll around the area. They do have few tables available to stay in and the service is friendly and bilingual (English) that makes this place a very recommended one.

Adrianna G.

Yelp
Truly the most disgusting, bitter espresso I ever had in several cities in USA and Europe. Undrinkable. I went to sit at a table after we ordered. Employee (the owner?) behind the counter pointed at two French men who just walked in and said the table was taken. What the fuck? Other reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor mirror my experience.
google avatar

Vivian L.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop in walking distance from our hotel. We stopped by for a cup of cappuccino, chocolate croissant and lemon cake on our way to the metro. Delicious coffee! The croissant was flaky and not dense, just the way I like it.
google avatar

Eugene H.

Yelp
So so coffee, very rude service. Ask for to go, want me to leave after 5 min just sitting down
google avatar

Mathias H.

Yelp
Paris has been one of the last places to give in and embrace the third wave of coffee and Telescope are among the best places in Paris for coffee. There is intense focus going into the coffees being prepared and the pour-overs are really top notch and the espresso based beverages are also very good. The selection of beans rotate frequently and doesn't only feature French roasters so always a good place to often stop by as there's often something new. This coupled with tasty pastries and a nice atmosphere makes it a prime spot for me whenever in Paris. I do still rank them as the best in Paris despite the competition getting tougher every single year. For someone like me with basically no knowledge of French whatsoever it also helps greatly that most of the staff are able and willing to speak English as well.

Yelp
During my recent trip to Paris, I had the opportunity to check out this hidden gem. Once entering this small location, we soon realized that there was only a couple tables. It was not very big at all, and the bar took up most of the footage. When we got up to order, luckily the guy spoke english which we were very happy about. I got an iced latte and a egg sandwich, which I would soon learn that it was actually an egg salad sandwich, for breakfast. It was nice as we were sitting there enjoying our breakfast, we noticed that a lot of people coming in spoke english. It was nice, it kind of felt like home in a way. Yelp
My coffee fanaticism has lead me everywhere for that perfect cup of coffee, and being in France was no exception. The coffee culture is definitely different from the States (and I'm certain from other countries as well), with people ordering a cup post-meal or before hitting work at the various cafes and bistros dotted across the city. Definitely the functional, relaxing vibe, juxtaposed against the hipster, filtered shenanigans exploding across the States. During my time in Paris, I came to love Telescope, a tiny divot along a tiny street just north of the Palais Royal - Musee du Louvre Metro Line 1 stop. The numerous times I visited, I saw the same barista, who was really cool and helpful when it came down to ordering and asking about the beans they used. He was bilingual in French and English, and whenever I used my (American-accented) French, I was happy that he continued speaking to me in French, rather than mentally labeling me as 'tourist' as a few places dotted in the city tend to do. He uses an aeropress for the filtered coffee, at the time serving a Colombian roast and a Kenyan roast (same roastery), with a second roastery for the espresso beans. In total, I had a capp, and ordered a cup of the Kenyan. Everything was top notch! On one of the mornings, I also ordered a croissant avec confiture (with jam). So tasty! A fluffy croissant with fresh, not overly sweet jam. This plus the coffee was the perfect way to start the day prior to roaming around the city!

Yelp
Upon being told by multiple people that this was the best coffee shop in Paris I just had to go. Yelp and google mistakenly led me to believe that it would be open on Sunday. It was NOT. Went back on Wednesday with a pal who lives in Paris and has been here several times. Coffee was delightful. The place was cute but very crowded. I thought the barista was nice but the owner was a little rude and my pal told me that this is par for the course and that he is often a bit rude (and that comment is coming from a Parisian)
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
Pretentious and condescending staff, great coffee. Let me start by saying that this wasn't my first time at the café. I've been there before and it was a more than pleasant experience. In fact, it was one of the best cups of coffee I have ever had in Paris. However, today I received a level of customer service that was beyond any level of pretentiousness I have ever experienced or witnessed. I knew that the café didn't have wifi, as their aim is to create an ambiance that promotes conversation and creativity (or so I assume). I get that. I think it's a wonderful idea. But today I took out my laptop to work on a creative writing paper. Not two minutes later did one of the baristas approach me and say, "I'm sorry, but we have a 15 minute computer limit." I found this interesting, as I have never been to or have heard of a café with such a rule. I asked "Oh, that's interesting. Why?" out of curiosity, and she replied condescendingly "It's policy. We prefer if people draw or something here." Excuse me... what? I don't draw. I'm sorry that my creative writing paper isn't on actual paper and apparently isn't artistic or creative enough to merit its existence in your café. Aside from that, I understand, it's policy. If that's their policy, then so be it. But I think a better way to handle the situation would have been to say, "Just so you know for next time..." instead of basically telling me to stop using my computer after 15 minutes as if I were her poorly behaved child. Now there won't be a next time. They've lost my business. It's really a shame, as it's surprisingly difficult to find exceptional coffee in Paris. 2 stars for the delicious coffee.
google avatar

Sarah H.

Yelp
Adorable little coffeeshop in the 1st that serves first rate brews. I had the cafe filtre which took them about 5 minutes to make, so you know it is good! The coffee had no bitterness to it, and was elegantly served in a little glass pot along with a tiny glass cup. It was a bit pricey at 4,5 euros, but totally worth it after slogging through cup after cup of poor quality Parisian espresso. They also carbonate their own water here, which I have never seen before, but also speaks to the care taken to serve quality beverages. They serve some pastries, and I had their lemon meringue tart which was delicious. They seem to have some options for le petit-dej including a parfait made with granola and fromage blanc, sounds good! And I can't not mention the bathroom, featuring Aesop soap...my all-time favorite bath product manufacturer. It's all in the details people, and this place doesn't skimp!
google avatar

B N.

Yelp
The proprietor of this place is just as condescending as the other tips say. Apparently its not ok to order a single espresso between three people, one who's a child and one who can't drink caffeine. The coffee to people ratio must be higher apparently. I wasn't aware of this arbitrary limit. What a joke. No coffee is worth putting up with someone as ridiculous as this.
google avatar

Tally Y.

Yelp
Telescope reminds me of an indie coffee shop you'd find in London. Modern design, quality equipment, simple menu, beans and at-home coffee making things for sale. Maybe I should have tried a typical "Parisian" cafe for the experience but I'm glad I came here instead. The baristas were extremely friendly and kindly switched to English for me as I'm not confident enough to order coffee in French. They didn't have iced latte listed on the menu but they said they were able to make one for me. I can't remember the name of the roaster they use but I do remember it's a french roaster and the coffee was delicious!! Milk made it nice and creamy with subtle sweetness. That day was particularly hot and this was the perfect cool-down drink. I wish I had been in Paris long enough to come back here but it was a bit too far from my area. I definitely recommend it to anyone with a healthy obsession and appreciation for the craft that is coffee making.
google avatar

Hillary L.

Yelp
Thank God for Telescope. Four months in to living in France, I hadn't a cappuccino. I wasn't up for paying 5 Euro for a crappy cup of coffee with milk, posing as a cappuccino. The moment I walked in the door, though, I new I was going to get something good. The first thing I always try at a new coffee shop is a cappuccino. I think it says a lot about the quality of the coffee, as well as the barista. Telescope delivers....great cappuccino. My husband got a pour-over, which was also very good. It's still a little expensive, but well worth it for the other options in the city. I'm so happy for the gourmet coffee trend that's really getting going in Paris and that Telescope is a part of it!
google avatar

Josh B.

Yelp
Incredible coffee. The barista suggested a wonderful Columbian Aeropress that was exquisite. Smooth and light bodied. Best cup of coffee I've ever had. He also was extremely helpful and kind and even took time to engage a homeless man in conversation while in between customers. Can't recommend this place enough.
google avatar

Del P.

Yelp
oh god, this cafe's decor is non-existent. B A R E is the word. The only reason why the other reviewers have given it a couple of stars is probably that this place is an American haunt - if you like to hang out with other Americans and only 'anglophone' or strictly Americans-only, this is the place for you. Otherwise, you're going to feel completely out of place.
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
Telescope is everything you could want from a cafe--excellent space, friendly and knowledgable staff, great coffee selection. Situated in the first, it's the perfect respite from the over-commercialized shopping outlets less than a kilometer away. Tucked away on a side-street, bare brick and whitewashed walls welcomed us as we sat down on the raw wood with our drinks to console our aching feet. The barista even brought us samples of a pour over she was brewing because she heard us discussing the Ethiopian coffees we'd had the day before--very cool. Come here if you want fairly-priced, fresh and tasty coffee. Bring a pad or a novel and settle in for a while, or grab-and-go and sit by the Seine. Can't go wrong.
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
Was drinking a cup of coffee this morning and was thinking about how much I miss the coffee from this place. I went with my husband on our trip to Paris, and made sure to check out this place bc my bff recommended it. I really really REALLY enjoyed my cup of coffee from here. If you're ever in Paris, please do make a stop into this place. Love the service here as well!! So thankful that I got to try such delicious coffee in a beautiful city!! Thank you Télescope!
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
Dropped by here yesterday and glad Yelp lead me to it. Friendly atmosphere and great minimalist spot to hang out over a coffee. Have to admit I wasn't a big fan of their espresso and instead preferred the filter coffee.
google avatar

Olivier L.

Yelp
Expertly made coffee in a small shop where it's unlikely you'll be able to sit down in at rush hour but which is around some of the best walks and Japanese eats in all of Paris. It's great place to get delicious caffeine kick after a mean bowl of Ramen (for lunch) at Kotteri Ramen Naritake for instance. I do wish they closed a bit later.
google avatar

C N.

Yelp
A great little surprise near the Lourve. I had been on the hunt for a small coffee house with small batch roasted beans while I was in Paris. The staff was nice and the coffee was pretty good (about 3-4 Euros for an espresso). I was pretty excited to also take a bag of beans home. Little did I know that I forgot to read the packaging and realized the beans were actually roasted in the UK, rather than France, so that was a bit disappointing...
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
The most delicious croissants served with jam. The cafe was also delicious. I'll be dreaming about this breakfast until I can return!
google avatar

Rick G.

Yelp
Amazing world class espresso! Over the top. One of the finest shots I've had anywhere.

Ryan D.

Yelp
Simple, beautiful, and brilliant at their craft. A good friend of mine owns a cafe in San Francisco who recommended this spot. He actually visited here many years ago and became motivated to open his own because of his experience here. I can echo the sentiment (except me not actually opening a cafe). I'll surely be stopping here on any trips through Paris in the future.
google avatar

Alexandros A.

Yelp
The atmosphere in the Cafe is serious, too serious, the Barrista looks obsessed and cold and books about coffee adorn the wall. If you want a warm, fun, welcoming atmosphere this is not the place. The energy in the space is weird, the acoustics do not help in having a private conversation, the proximity to the bar makes everything uncomfortable. Ah and laptops not allowed. There is no wifi. It's all about being cool not your comfort as a customer. Ok then so maybe it's worth going in for a take-away coffee. Be warned that although the place offers quite good coffee for Paris Illy-standards for anyone accustomed to good Australlian inspired coffee this will taste rather blunt. Smooth entry, indifferent flavors, smooth finish. Nothing special, just OK. For the attitude you get the coffee better be awesome. What is great though are the olive fichelles and other baked goods, often baked or finished in premises.
google avatar

Philippa B.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. I have several places in Paris as a go to for good coffee which lets face it can be hard to find. Telescope is by far by favorite now. The stark yet homely interior made me feel instantly relaxed and the handsome moustached barista whipped me up a little piece of heaven flat white. The food options are a little sparse but what they do offer is of the upmost quality. For breakfast, thick slices of sourdough toast with jam and butter, yoghurt and by my opinion best Granola ever made by Emperor Norton ( I subconsciously just gave it a capital letter!). I will be going back time and time again when I am in Paris and can not recommend it enough.
