The most beautiful church I have ever been to. It has ancient architecture with many meticulous details. If you come here, you will be overwhelmed by the grandeur of the church. Entrance is free and the church is open almost exclusively in the evening.

It is not as impressive as some of the churches we saw in Mexico but still a beautiful church to visit. For some reason it is quite dark inside.

A Majestic Masterpiece in Oaxaca The Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán is one of the most breathtaking churches in Mexico—a must-see for anyone visiting Oaxaca! ⛪ The Architecture – The exterior is grand and imposing, but the real magic happens inside. The intricate gold-gilded baroque interior is absolutely stunning, with every inch covered in detailed carvings, frescoes, and religious iconography. The ceiling, in particular, is a work of art that leaves you in awe. 📜 The History – Built in the 16th century by Dominican friars, this temple has stood the test of time and remains a symbol of Oaxaca’s deep cultural and religious heritage. The adjacent former monastery now houses the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca, where you can see treasures from Monte Albán, including the famous Mixtec gold from Tomb 7. 🌿 The Surroundings – The botanical garden next door adds to the charm, and the entire area around Santo Domingo is lively and full of energy, with street performers, markets, and artisanal shops. It’s the perfect place to soak in the city’s culture and history. Whether you’re into history, architecture, or just looking for a peaceful place to reflect, this temple is absolutely unforgettable. Don’t miss it!

Google
Absolutely STUNNING and I have been to quite a few other churches/cathedrals in Puebla and Oaxaca and this one tops them all. I was only able to spend about 20 minutes looking around since we had gone to other local attractions but this was the highlight and so worth it. If you only have a short time in Oaxaca do yourself a favor and see this church.

Located in the heart of centro, you will never missed this beautiful cathedral when you pass by . Nice to do a short visit to this church.

Nice church for a quick visit. Google said it was closed, but since my tour was canceled and I had nothing else to do on a Sunday morning I decided to just go by anyway. It was open.

Beautiful church, our friends were married here. It’s stunning inside and the square out the front is a great location for a traditional Mexican post wedding dance parade.

Yelp
The Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman is probably Oaxaca's most famous cathedral and one of its most iconic sites. We had walked past it several times (including at night), but when we finally went inside, I was still floored! We had heard that New Spanish/Mexican Baroque architecture included a lot of gold - but, WOW the gold. The interior of the church is really incredible. We didn't spend long inside (if you want a guide to provide the history of the church, there will likely be several people outside the church offering to give you a church for a small fee), but it was really beautiful, and I got some amazing photographs. Don't miss it if you're visiting Oaxaca for the first time!

Yelp
One of the most beautiful churches I have been to is Templo de Santo Domingo. Again - just like most things Oaxaca - I find it rather challenging to describe in words about the beauty of this church - both from the inside as well as from the outside. The square outside the church is a very popular hangout for the young and the hip and for the odd tourists as well. No matter what the time of the day or night - the vibe around the church is full of life and zest. There is no way you will miss this place if you are in town and go down the solitary walking street which leads from Zocollo to this church. And if you do miss it - you haven't been to Oaxaca.

Yelp
Amazing! I haven't been to Italy yet but I suspect that the churches would be as amazing and Italy as Santa Domingo. It is just unbelievable. You just have to see it to believe it.

Yelp
This church happens to be the main church to visit, not the one in the Zocalo center. This one you paid a admission fee to visit and there's no flash photography. The scenery of this once a church is breath taking. What a amazing beautiful church this is. You can see how is was once was when the Spanish was here and how they built churches so beautifully. See the pictures is 100% not the same as being here, (only of you care about art and culture) being here is so worth a visit and how the city of Oaxaca is so much more then mole and markets. Church 10/10.

Yelp
No matter how many pictures you see, they just don't do justice! I usually don't go to churches, but since my parents got married here over 30 yrs ago, we visit this place every year. As a kid I always looked at their wedding pics and thought how beautiful the place was, so when I was old enough to appreciate the beauty of the church I was amazed and decided to go every chance I could. You can never get bored, every time you go back you'll find new things you missed before. Everytime I'm there I'm amazed by its beauty. The gold decorations, high quality handcrafted woodwork with lots of details, paintings & sculptures everywhere. Did I mention the botanical gardens? It opens at 10 am. So you might need 1 whole day to visit the church, botanical garden & the museum. If you want a guided tour in english for the gardens, stop by on Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday.
