Roman Temple of Évora

Beautiful and historic place in the heart of Évora! The Roman Temple — often called the Temple of Diana — is almost 2000 years old and one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Portugal. Great spot for photos, especially at sunset! You can really feel the history here. Highly recommend visiting

A stunning and beautiful piece of history, this is one of the iconic sites that can be found within the city and is one that you need to visit when here. It is really impressive and great to walk around and appreciate.

Visited the Roman Temple of Évora on 31 October 2025 and absolutely loved it. It’s an incredibly well-preserved piece of Roman history right in the heart of the city. Even though the site is quite small, it’s impressive to see the columns up close and imagine how the whole complex must have looked. The information boards are clear and helpful, and the surroundings are very picturesque, perfect for a short stop, photos, and a little time-travel moment. Definitely worth a visit while in Évora!!

This seemed a little out of place walking through town to stumble across, but it was magnificent to see. We were fortunate enough to walk by at night with it all illuminated, very impressive! These are the interesting things you can find when travelling through old towns in Europe, makes it very unique.

A Remarkable Surprise in the Heart of Évora Our visit to the Roman Temple of Évora turned out to be one of the unexpected highlights of our trip. After exploring the site, we sat just south of the temple at a small nearby bar, enjoying a cold beer and a glass of wine in the sunshine a perfect setting to take in the view. The temple itself, with its beautiful surroundings and remarkably well-preserved columns, carries an incredible story. It’s hard to believe it’s still standing after centuries of history and change. The fact that it’s completely free to visit made it feel like even more of a hidden gem. Honestly, it felt like a bit of good luck that we stumbled upon such a special place in such a relaxed and charming way. Absolutely worth a visit if you find yourself in Évora you won’t be disappointed.

Had more fun driving in the tiny streets of Évora! Temple is great. Easily accessible and free to view/walk up to. No tickets needed - only if you want to go inside the church, and that’s up to you. Awesome to see something like this well preserved and still standing.

Very nice, though not so much to see around. The garden area has a nice view.

My wife and I were here on a Gate1 tour. We visited the Roman Temple, aka Temple of Diana, (Templo Romano de Évora (Templo de Diana)), partially in ruins but with 14 of 18 original Corinthian columns that survived time and Germanic invasions in the 5th century. Next to it is a former museum, now the Hotel Pousada dos Loios. We wandered past the Roman Temple and saw a park nearby, then visited the many interesting shops nearby afterwards.

The Roman Temple of Évora is stood silently near the Diana Garden. No one know when the temple was constructed. Many believe is 1st AD. This temple left only the column. The wall is disappearing from the past. It is close to cathedral of the Évora. Roman has been here. This may be their public square. Next to the temple is garden of Diana. Many also call this Roman temple as Temple of Diana. I think you may want to check out the coffee vendor who sell the salty cod fish pastry. It is delicious.

Going to visit the Palaces of the Dukes of Casaval, you see off to your left this Roman Temple. It was built in the 1st or 2nd century. Amazing that it is still standing after all these years.

The Temple in Evora was originally thought to honor Diana but it turns out to be one of Augustus' temples to Augustus. They found a cenotaph recently that pretty much proves that. It's a gorgeous structure and on a beautiful day makes for a striking photograph. Don't miss this or the nearby museum if you are in the area.

Who doesn't love a Roman Temple Ruin sitting on the highest point of a walled city? I just feel like I went back in time several thousand years! This is a walk by selfie opportunity for the best of us!
