We stayed away from the main tourist areas during a long holiday here. Despite speaking Spanish and trying to be friendly with locals, we had a horrible experience. Our car was keyed the first night before we even met anyone. Public signs are tagged with "tourist go home". There was propaganda stapled to walls and written in bathrooms. A man yelled obscenities into our apartment window because we were "making too much noise" just cooking breakfast. Our children got a lot of weird stares and muttering. Many of the staff seemed to want to avoid us at restaurants. Never seen anything like this in travels across 40 or so countries.
If you come to Tenerife just to party or for the weather, you might be fine in your isolation. For anyone who travels to learn about history, culture, language, food, nature, geography, etc., look elsewhere. Maybe mass tourism has created a rightful backlash, or maybe a minority of locals have successfully blamed tourism for all of their problems, or maybe both. For whatever reason, some locals will make your trip very unpleasant no matter how you behave.
