Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Anchorage

"Showstopping and locally sourced is the mantra at Tent City Taphouse. The gastropub opened during the pandemic, no less, but is already making a name for itself as the to-go for hard-to-find craft beers from all over Alaska."

Our tour guide was batting 1000 with his restaurant recs and this one was no different. Started with the duck fat fries and asked for them to be extra crispy!!!! Perfect and full of flavor!!! Main was their belgian waffle with chicken tenders and a scoop of pineapple-coconut ice cream!!! This is what heaven must be like!!! The ice cream paired beautifully with the chicken and waffle. Pure bliss!!! Service was excellent too despite the restaurant being crazy busy with all the tour groups!!

We had an excellent meal here while on a pre-cruise tour. My salmon burger was outstanding. Tasty and fresh. It was just perfect. But even better were the garlic cilantro fries! I shared them with the couple sitting next to us and Ive made two lifelong friends! Thanks, Tent City! Worth a trip to Anchorage just for those! My cousin’s halibut was excellent. Tender and so juicy. Perfectly cooked and not greasy. Oh yea, the beers were great, too! Excellent, friendly service.

Google
This was a very pleasant surprise. What seemed like just a mall restaurant turned out to be a nice, cozy place with a great menu and tap list. The tap list was all Alaska craft beer, a nice chance to try beer from breweries I didn't expect to be able to visit. I had a hazy from Black Spruce Brewing in Fairbanks that was excellent. If I had not been full from my excellent dinner, a spare rib poutine, I would have explored more. Service was good, but not top notch as the server did not really know the beers when my wife asked. But she was still fast and very pleasant, so it is understandable. I would return here.

Google
Came with a party of four and we were able to be seated right away which was great considering this was on a holiday weekend. Ordered burgers and the short ribs with shrimp and grits. The two year old in our party said it was the best food she’d ever had. We enjoyed the anchorage style burgers with the jalapeño bacon. Short ribs were pretty good. Also had a hazy IPA which was good. Nothing mind-blowing food wise but overall we all agreed we would dine there again.

Google
This is my new favourite place in downtown anchorage. Good selection of beer. Decent price. Clean & modern bar. Bright. I didn’t order any food this time but it looks good. Will try some on my next visit for sure.

Google
The food and service were awesome! Our server was very attentive and made some good recommendations on the beers. The only issue I had was the temperature inside the place…. It was freezing!🥶 BUT… Will definitely return and recommend this place to our friends.

Google
My first time to Alaska but my husband stops here when he is headed to slope .The fish and chips were ok a little dry 7/10 garlic fries were 10/10 the salmon cranberry dip and bread was phenomenal. 10/10 My husband had the meat loaf and it was moist, the veggies were great 10/10

Google
We had a good server with great recommendations for beer and food. Good selection of beef and fish options. I had the short ribs routine. My husband ordered shrimp and grits...not traditional like we have in Georgia, but delicious. Kind of small/tight inside, outdoor seating was on sidewalk of a street with nothing really going on. Loved the wheat and sour beers and the grapefruit lavendar cider

Yelp
Definitely highlight of my food experiences in Alaska. Location is decent sized and is located on the outskirts of the mall downtown. There is ample seating and bar seating. There are both brews and wines for drinking, and flight options for those wanting to try multiple. Service was good- the waitress was helpful in making decisions regarding food and beer based on flavor profile. The Halibut Alaskana was excellent. It was incredibly flavorful and had a number of the ingredients that I typically like- fresh veggies, cheese, garlic (lots) and a flavorful fish. I kept scarfing it down and was so incredibly full and satisfied. Beware for garlic breath post-meal Loved this spot, and wish I could bring my wife here to try this fish!!

Yelp
It had been a while since I went to Tent City but found myself downtown, so I stopped in. They were busy but I was still able to get seated right away. I finally got to try the mimosa flight, which was great. I got the French dip and thought it was amazing! Flavorful, cheesy, and creamy with the perfect amount of horseradish aioli. I would definitely get it again! My husband got the halibut and chips but couldn't have the fries, so they subbed carrots at no charge. I tried a bite and thought it was really good. It had more flavor than fish and chips from other places in town. Overall, we were very happy and will go back soon!

Yelp
Small | Price | wild salmon Small - right away the major issue I saw this that the location is pretty small. There is only about 50 seats in the entire restaurant. Therefore, it is important for you to have a reservation during peak hours. However it isn't noisy which is a plus. I had dinner with a friend and her husband and we were able to have a nice conversation. Price - the price point is relatively higher than others in anchorage. The food quality to price ratio is pretty good however. So, it is worth the 10-15% higher price point. The meals aren't large but they are filling if you have a standard appetite. Wild Salmon - I had the wild salmon special. It was delicious. It came with season veggies and was delivered on top of a mash potato bed. It was a 10-12 ounce piece of salmon which essentially seasoned to perfection. Would highly recommend. Pro tip: there is a good amount of street parking and a public parking lot within 1 block of the location. Therefore, you don't need to add time to your travel schedule. Pro tip: they have 24 beers on tap that are local and rotate. Therefore, it's a nice spot to try out multiple local beers. Pro tip: they have beer and mimosa flights. So, you can sample a bunch of items on their menu for a relatively low cost.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the lunch I had at the Tent City Taphouse. They have a great variety of beers. Consider trying a flight of beers so you can try a bunch of them and find one (or two) that you really like. They have good burgers and French dip. The wait staff was attentive. The food wasn't cheap for lunch, but Alaska is not cheap and I tend to be more price sensitive than I should be. I liked my experience there and I'd go back again. I don't recall if they offered a military discount, so for the military members, ask them.

Yelp
Late night hunger satisfied with a call in order right before they closed! So gracious in taking my order without hesitation! Literally arrived to pickup my burger and fries before closing! Nice looking bar in downtown! Smelled the delicious, juicy cheese burger and garlic/cilantro duck fat fries! Yep smelled delicious and was right on the money! Them fries had most unique tastes.. real fries.. with plenty of flavor! Thanks for being so good especially when your late night craving is specific!

Yelp
Good Presentation from Yelp is why we wanted roc heck this place out. Unfortunately the food was not well done. We ordered the sleeping lady salad and the cheese burger with a veggie patty. The meat on the salad was not a good cut. It was super fatty and not cooked well. The cheese burger was bland. I will say the fries were great and they were able to make it vegetarian. The server was nice but they could use 2 servers for their floor.
google avatar

Anna R.

Yelp
The service was okay. I waited for a little bit. Sat at the bar which seats about 7-9 to wait for a table. So I had 2 beers each $8.50 = $17.00 & an appetizer @= $18.99 at the bar. This place is downtown so walking distance to the hotels. Off the street parking. Free after 6pm. The beer menu is in the screen but not able to see the menu for them. Pricey for just a drop in. Been here done that. Started to get busy after 6pm. A little bit of a wait time. The place is nice & comfortable for a nice corner bar.

Yelp
Even with a waitress handoff mid-meal, this is excellent food and a good experience. Everything was wildly flavorful. Small seating environment, so be prepared to wait. Order every kind of fries.

Yelp
Wicked good brews and upscale pub food. Firstly, they had a great selection of 24 beers on tap (all from Alaskan breweries)! I could not decide on just one, and our server recommended a few for a customized flight. I appreciated the thoughtful level of service and loved all the beers I tried! We also ordered dinner while sipping our drinks. I had the Downtown Style Burger and we ordered a Braised Duck Poutine to share. Wow. I was anticipating standard pub fare, but they kicked it to another level! I was impressed on all fronts - great service, fun ambience and top notch brews and bites. Would definitely recommend!

Yelp
My husband, son, and some of our family visited Tent City a couple of weeks ago while we were in town on vacation. My husband and I ate here two years ago and we had a great experience, so we decided to try it again. The restaurant is clean, the service is great, and the food arrives in a reasonable amount of time. We loved the fried king crab, because when in Alaska why not enjoy fresh, local delicacies?! We also tried the duck fat fries, which were crispy, flavorful, and savory. We also got a cup of the seafood chowder which was creamy, hearty, and had the perfect blend of spices to bring out the seafood. My only complaint is that two years ago the king crab meal was around $90, but this year it was around $130. I understand prices go up, but a $40 increase in just a couple years is steep. The meal includes smashed potatoes and a vegetable medley with delicious beets. For dessert my husband and I split the crème brulee, which was delicious. Our son loved the fresh berries on top. We also tried a berry cheesecake which was creamy, thick, and not overly sweet. We would eat here again. Rating from F to A+++, I give it an A+ because of the big price increase.
google avatar

Lyn S.

Yelp
Great Caesar salad, seafood chowder was also very good. Espresso martini was just Kahlua and Carolans, so not a true espresso martini. The service was ok. All that said it is a great spot to grab lunch. Beautiful fresh flowers on each table.

Yelp
I wanted to love this place. Mimosa flights and poutine for brekkie? What's not to love? I should have just had the flight. The food took over 30minites and suddenly showed up when I mentioned how long it took. I did have the eggs put to the same de, I love poutine but that was not a combo I was willing to explore. The eggs were perfectly poached, but f a little cold. Thank goodness I asked for them in the side. The poutine had clearly been sitting as the cheese curds had completely melted into the fries making it a fork and knife situation.

Yelp
I have a LOT of thoughts on our experience at Tent City Taphouse - even though we didn't try too many food items. If it weren't for our plans to hit a few more eateries, we would have just hung out all day and sampled more. We'll start with the location. Perfectly situated in the "city" in North Anchorage, we had no issues finding the location. It's attached to the back side of the 5th Ave mall, which was perfect for our day trip (we were visiting from Kodiak and were walking all day). It's quaint inside, but has ample seating including quite a few bar seats. Fun brewery vibe, all in all we liked the ambiance. We were immediately seated and greeted by the friendly staff, who answered our questions about beer choices and food alike. First round I had a hazy IPA, and my husband got a raspberry sour, we both loved them. Second round I stuck with the IPA, and he opted for a fun flight. Now onto food - the real star of this review. We only two items, both were phenomenal. We started with the cilantro garlic fries. These were perfect for what they are, and the cilantro gave a nice unique pop. But the Arctic Cioppino was out of this world!!! It was so flavorful, and unlike any dish I had before. Most definitely one of the best dishes I've had when visiting Anchorage, and we hop over a lot (mainly to eat and drink our way thru the town, we're foodies and definitely appreciate good food). There were chunks of perfectly cooked seafood, and thick and creamy broth, pita on the side, and a delightful bright side salad with their house dressing. 10/10! We will be back! Thanks to our server Adam for steering us in the right direction, and and being overall an attentive server. Five stars guys, we can't wait to try more!

Yelp
I ordered the Halibut/Chips and the mimosa flight! Best damn halibut and chips I've ever had... and I've had halibut and chips all over Alaska. The mimosas were so yummy, definitely taking my gal pals back so they can enjoy them with me. Our waitress was friendly and checked on us multiple times. The inside of the restaurant has a lot of seating. But make sure you make a reservation before going. They got pretty busy during lunch time and filled up within 10min of us being seated.

Yelp
Just an average experience today at Tent City Taphouse! I definitely recommend the key lime wheat beer, especially if you like fruity beers or sours. We started with the short rib poutine, but it came without the short rib. We were hungry and didn't realize until we were already nibbling.. we thought maybe the meat was under the cheese? Haha. Eventually we asked our waitress about it and she offered to have it remade, but it wasn't worth it to us because we had already eaten so much of it. It was a tasty dish regardless! All four of us got sandwiches-- the Nashville chicken was definitely HOT not just mild. The bun was super soggy. My sister and I each got the girdwood burger, DELICIOUS. I love the classic combination of veggies, feta, hummus, and tzatziki. The truffle fries & the cilantro fries were both good, the cilantro ones being less intense in flavor.
google avatar

Caseylyn A.

Yelp
The seafood was amazing, the service was good. Nuts a very tight and small place. Just wasn't what I was personally expecting. But if you're a seafood lover this place is for you!!

Meagan K.

Yelp
Fast service and really good food. Everything was super fresh , we really enjoyed our food. The mimosa flight is super phone and they have a good wine list.
google avatar

Jose G.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my meal here. The food was delicious and filling - halibut and chips. My waitress was very attentive and not overbearing, I had a nice experience. I went a little early for dinner because I attempted to eat there the day before and it was very busy. Very nice atmosphere.

Yelp
I've been coming to Alaska for work for the last four years and I was happy to see this place open up. I ordered the cheesesteak with their scallop add-on because I was looking for the whole surf and Turf vibe with a lot of cheesy goodness and it did not disappoint. Pretty good beer selection and very clean restaurant with great staff. The only downside was how spending this was. We each had a lunch item and one beer (5 people) and it cost us $200. I'd probably come back because the Nashville hot chicken sandwich looks amazing

Elder W.

Yelp
It missed for our family. The general feeling among the 6 of us was the entrees were all cooked "past" where they should have been. Be it burgers that were well done, dry meat over cooked in the French Dip & Philly Cheese, to what was probably beautiful home made pasta in the Mushroom Ravioli that was then for some reason "fried" (or baked dry?) till it was tough with a dry exterior to the point if needing a knife to cut and very chewy. It was also topped with some kind of cheese disk that you could pick up as one piece because it had been heated to the point of being a dry chewy wad. Looked like it could have been really good food but was just not taken care of in the prep.

Yelp
This was a good restaurant for some great eats! I started with a flight of beer, the bartender was very helpful and knowledgeable, she allowed me to sample a few so that I could make an informed decision. Our appetizer was the scallop spinach dip and it was delicious. The bread served with it was very soft and paired nicely. The special that night was a King Salmon dish and it was a great and fresh meal. The Bootlegger NY deal was very good, the combination of the oyster mushroom, steak, sauce, and potatoes were excellent. The steak was very tender and flavorful. Lastly, the short rib dish was probably the best meal of the night for me! It was very tender, well seasoned, and paired well with the shrimp. Of course I can't forget about the owner and wait staff, I wish I had their name, but they were very nice and attentive. I wish this place had liquor, that would've definitely been cool, but I understand. I'd definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Luna N.

Yelp
I sat at the bar and watched the bartender make their $20 flight of margaritas using cheap premade margarita mix and throw in some cut up fruit to dress it up. The food is okay-- the pelmeni came out cold and obviously out of a frozen bag. Only good thing was the service and actual beers!
google avatar

Elise L.

Yelp
Best hummus platter I've ever had. Definitely worth the money! I've come to this bar 4 times in 2 days. Beers are amazing. 10/10 definitely recommend.

Beverly R.

Yelp
We went to Tent City on an overnight prior to an Alaskan cruise. The food was very good and there are very good choices for beer on tap. We sat at the bar and the servers were friendly. The decor is pure wilderness Alaska. Would love going again.

Jeff S.

Yelp
Apple pie (broken tooth): more like a cider, very nice. The rest were good, and their selection would have warranted another visit (but it was our last day in town) Kenai river oatmeal stout Midnight sun (fallen angel) King street (irish stout)
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Food was hefty and delicious, great selection of beers. We seemed to get in at a busy time, it felt a little cramped and overstimulating once seated. Staff were friendly - the food took a little long but we received some kind of beer tokens to use for the next time we come to make up for it.
google avatar

Jenny S.

Yelp
The poutine was awesome! The short rib meat was delicious and the fries were great. I'd definitely recommend.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
Great food and service. Traveling on a tour post cruise and stopped by for lunch. Nice place close to the Mall. Will come back again on our next trip to Anchorage.
google avatar

Taylor E.

Yelp
Absolutely awesome food and environment. I'm a commercial fisherman, I'm picky, same with my dad, halibut was A1! Hot chicken was great. Truffle fries amazing, but the clam chowder might have been the Highliner. Service was great and the historical story is such a cool addition to Anchorage.
google avatar

Keiko C.

Yelp
All the food options were awesome. Very small/intimate food spot but id recommend to call ahead and make a reservation. If not, you're gonna be waiting a while buuuuuut it's worth the wait

Matt B.

Yelp
Service was good Food is fair at best. Much better pub food for less other places like roadhouse.
google avatar

Joan F.

Yelp
We enjoyed our burgers and beers here. The place is small and fills up quickly, and it was worth the 20 minute wait to sit at the bar. The service was well paced and competent. There were a few other pubs I preferred over this because we appreciate a more leisurely pace to enjoy our conversation and food than we felt here. While no one rushed us out of Tent City, there was a bit of a hectic vibe here. Still, the burgers were good and the beer was delicious. If I were a local, I'd likely return on nights that I knew were a bit less busy.
google avatar

Nicole Y.

Yelp
What a great place to stop in for local ales! We stopped in for drinks after dinner and I really wished we ate dinner here! Tent city has a great selection of beers and food. Servers are friendly and helpful! I'm a fan and will be back again when we're in the area
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Best Halibut and cioppino we have ever eaten. Service was very friendly and helpful. Ambiance is very casual. Halibut was baked with mayonnaise and bread crumbs to perfection, and vegetables were not overcooked. Cioppino was a white sauce with salmon, Halibut, shrimp, and a bite of king crab. Side salad was tasty with lots of garlic Naan as well. We didn't get anything on tap, but a wide selection seems available.
google avatar

Taylor N.

Yelp
The atmosphere was clean and uppity, good music, good temperature in restaurant, knowledgeable servers, great food. Will be back!
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
So here's what is up, my group came ravenous, and I think we caught Tent City Taphouse at a tough time: understaffed and busy. After a 30 minute wait, we were seated but at a table with ... no chairs. We stood around the table, and it wasn't until after we ordered that another table left and told us we could take their chairs. We also sat right by the road so we kept getting gray flecks of ... the city in our drinks and stuff, definitely to no fault of TCT but just a thought if you go. And we had to wait an hour for the food. But turns out the food was good! We got the downtown style burger, mushroom ravioli, and Waldorf salad. Decent meals, if not maybe a bit $$ for what they are. TLDR: I say get a seat inside at a less busy time! Food will be yummy.
google avatar

Karl A.

Yelp
This was a great stop! It was pretty quiet at dinner time, so we were able to get a table fast. The server was there quick and had our order in instantly. The food came out and was really good! The burger was cooked well and super flavorful. The arugula was a perfect compliment to the bacon. It checked all the boxes! The fries were cooked well too. The bangers and mash was something I didn't expect see on a menu in Anchorage. It was cooked beautifully and tasted great! Great food, great service!

Yelp
Everybody knows that the French word brûlée is always preceded by the word crème when it's on a menu. So, what is the scallop brûlée on this menu? I had to find out. But first, you should know that Tent City Taphouse delivers a lot of awesomeness before you get to that part of the menu. There are an abundance of Alaskan beers on tap, and a beer flight is a fantastic way to try several beers and still be able to walk when it's time to leave. The server can also pick them for you if you can't decide. And, there's a mimosa flight, too. There's no liquor here, but those who like mixed drinks would likely approve. We shared strawberry, raspberry, pineapple, and watermelon mimosas, all tasty. You know the boring old spinach artichoke dip at most places? They have a *scallop* artichoke dip, beautifully creamy and scallopy, served with crispy sourdough toast. Now, back to that scallop brûlée. I can get that on top of my burger? I don't know what it is, but heck yeah. It's an 8 ounce burger, thoughtfully served with a knife so you can cut it into normal-sized burgers. The burger is beefy and high quality, and could easily have stood on its own. But, with the gorgeous squish of scallops, I found myself taking small bites so I could really enjoy it. And, serving this beautiful burger with duck fat fries is spectacular. At MacDonald's, you drown their fries in ketchup and sadly jam them into your mouth. Here, every fry is a moment to be savored. We're in Alaska, home to some of the tastiest fish in the world, and my wife ordered the Halibut Alaskana. The fish was wonderful, and the mashed potatoes were terrific, but the fennel and peppers medley - while pretty - weren't something she enjoyed. The mushroom ravioli had a nice chew to it, rather than being soft, and was served in a tomato cream sauce. Tasty. Service was crisp and, even though I wouldn't call this a sports bar, sports were on the large screen TVs. Outdoor dining filled up quickly on a beautiful day like this. Next time, we will wait for one. Oh, yes...there will be a next time. There are a lot of great options downtown, but Tent City stands out.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Great food, good selection of Alaskan beers, and great service. Ordered the salmon and it was the tastiest meal we had in Anchorage. Loved the flavor - Jamaican vibe. Service was A+! Ask for Jesh.
google avatar

Todd P.

Yelp
We stopped by for beer and munchies. After a couple beers, we split an order of salmon dip and a half order of duck fat fries. The dip was excellent but the fries weren't crispy as we'd hoped. After a bit, we split an order of short rib spaetzle. Wow! Super rich and the short rib was fall apart tasty. The highlight of the night. The service was okay and the prices were high but the quality of the food made it all good.

Jelani C.

Yelp
The best! Halibut Alaskana was the best meal I've had from a restaurant downtown by far & I'm born & raised 22 years in Anchorage! I love there burgers, fries, salads.. yet to try the drinks but they look amazing too! Lol
google avatar

Daniella A.

Yelp
They've added a brunch menu from 11am-3pm on Saturdays & Sundays. The brunch is excellent! The menu isn't super extensive, but the food is creative and very tasty. They have blueberry pancakes served with ice cream on top & ice cream is melted into the batter! Talk about a sweet breakfast. I really enjoyed the breakfast poutine. It was hearty and very filling. The mimosa flights are also super fun. The watermelon mimosa tasted like a jolly rancher, but my favorite was the berry one! Tent city has a lot of variety on their menu, but they execute all of it exceptionally well!

Yelp
Food & Everything was great! Photos says it all! Very attentive service Celebrated my 38th birthday today! Recommended for sure

Yelp
The service, food, ambience, was all excellent. We happened to come here randomly just trying to kill time as our first lunch option was closed. I cannot express how glad I am that fate took us here. The staff was phenomenal/personable including the owner. The food has been unmatched to anything I have experienced in anchorage thus far. After experiencing discrimination from another highly recommended location here in Anchorage, we quickly ran back to this location. Food, service, location, are all highlights of this wonderful establishment. Also the pepper peak from double shovel is a new personal favorite. Thank you Lindsey and company for making this stop a highlight of our trip.

Dustin S.

Yelp
If you don't get the duck fat fries, you are wrong. 10/10 every time. Mimosa flight pairs really well with the fries.
google avatar

James A.

Yelp
Ordered a lunch to go order for my office downtown, and the guy that answered the phone sounded like he was stoned. He had trouble answering a couple questions I had. When I arrived after the 25 minutes I was advised until it was ready, the woman at the host stand copped an attitude before I could get my order picked up. When she handed me The order, I specifically asked if they added the requested blueberry bar-b-q sauce that I so love. She assured me it was there. I looked in the bag and saw a small ramekin that appeared to be it. So drove back to work only to find one member got the wrong item and the blueberry bbq sauce was actually au ju for another members order. To say this place is a disaster is putting it mildly. Im done. No longer will I waste my hard earned money at this place.
google avatar

Alexandra M.

Yelp
Service was atrocious, I mentioned it being hard to see the beer menu so he just left....(options, stand in front of another table because of the glare on the screen, download and ap which I couldn't do with 5% battery). Ended up with a sour beer which I struggled to finish as it was sweet. I had the faux Mac and cheese which I left more than half of. Partner got fish and chips which he said was bland, even leaving most of the chips.
google avatar

C N.

Yelp
The beer was good, as was the German mac n' cheese. The strange Cobb salad is also surprisingly delicious. Good fries, too. I was very disappointed with the Nashville chicken sandwich. Do not get it. Their chicken has a curried flavor, so when it was smothered in hot sauce, the whole thing had a foul flavor. You're better off ordering something else.

Diane K.

Yelp
Pros: The gluten free halibut was the best meal that I had while in Anchorage. Cons: You have to sit with strangers. Getting the attention of waitstaff for a beverage refill was challenging.
