Looking For an Italian Lakeside Retreat Without the Crowds? Head to This Gorgeous European Alternative

"Set against the backdrop of its natural beauty, Ticino is also renowned for its winemaking, with nearly 80 percent of the canton’s vineyards devoted to merlot grapes. One of the region's premier wineries is Tenuta Castello di Morcote, a 150-hectare estate known for its organic and biodynamic vineyards, olive groves, and a historic castle dating back to 1100. Managed by the Gianini family for four generations, the winery has earned a distinguished reputation for its rosé, chardonnay, and unique white merlot wines. In addition to sampling the vineyard’s exceptional wines, travelers can enrich their experience by participating in special events like wine dinners and staying at the family’s luxurious boutique hotel, Relais Castello di Morcote, elegantly housed in a former convent." - Taryn White Taryn White Taryn White is a D.C.-based travel writer who covers a wide range of topics, including family travel, hotels, food, aviation, beaches, historical and cultural topics, and wellness travel. We had a wonderful tasting. Giulia (I hope I spelled that correctly!) was a wonderful host. All the wines were delicious. We were disappointed could only buy two bottles because we were walking and had to carry them in our backpack! The walking tour of the winery and castle grounds beforehand was great and took in spectacular views. Afterwards we walked down to the church in the main village which was another lovely walk An easy bus ride for us from Lugano. Highly recommended

Our experience of wining and dining above Lake Lugano was nothing short of a dream. We sipped delicious wines and enjoyed a tour through their beautiful winery. The culinary experience was a delight (just look at the pictures!) and perfectly complemented by a selection of the local wines. Although we're not usually the biggest fans of biodynamic wines, these wines truly won us over, so much so that we left with a case of their white wine. We will definitely be back!

We had a lovely and unexpected trip to this winery. Some very delicious wine, beautiful property and a nice short hike around the vineyard and castle. We regret not buying more bottles when we left!!

I went during the offseason. There’s an easy walk around the vineyards and castle. The wines are great and you pay for this supreme quality.
