Tenuta Di Ricavo, a Design Boutique Hotel Castellina in Chianti, Italy

"This medieval hamlet, surrounded by nearly 1000 acres of nature reserve in the heart of the Chianti hills, has been lovingly restored and converted to a 4-star hotel.Tenuta Di Ricavo is composed of a manor house and 4 surrounding farmer’s cottages. Rooms are available in different buildings and most have a traditional Tuscan design. Three rooms have a modern style. This is a historic property that does not have a lift. The rooms are reached by stairs.Tenuta Di Ricavo is tucked away from the noisy main roads and busy urban centres. However, despite its quiet location, the hotel is extremely central, exactly on the border between the provinces of Siena and Florence. When you are not relaxing in one of the hotel’s 2 swimming pools or reading in the library, you can stroll on the marked walking paths around the hotel or enjoy a work out at the gym. The hotel is open from April to October." - My Boutique Hotel

This wonderful hotel were we stayed for more than 25 years during the summer is unfortunately sold. At the website it says that the hotel will re-open in 2024. However nothing is happening and one does not get an answer when contacting them. In the meantime it is 2025.

We came from busy Sorrento to this lovely estate nestled in the Chianti region near Castellina. It is a beautiful estate bought in the 60’s by the family that still operates it. Originally a medieval village, the property has been lovingly and beautifully restored and transformed into a beautiful vacation destination. Christina, the proprietor, is a lovely person who endeavors to make your stay wonderful. She always had suggestions and directions during our stay. I really enjoyed reading her grandmothers memoir about the purchase and restoration of the estate.||The rooms are large and very nicely appointed. The on-site restaurant has wonderful patio seating and features a very nice breakfast every morning. We ate dinner twice during our stay and both meals were outstanding. Staff are very personable and professional. One whole afternoon we enjoyed the cacophony of birds singing from our balcony while enjoying wine and cheese. Two nice pools, reading rooms, and trails are other options. Lots of wineries and quaint villages are nearby to visit.

My husband and I were recently at this charming hotel. Our accmodations were spacious, well outfitted and immaculate. We had dinner there each night of our stay. There was a chef's menu that changed daily in addition to their regular menu. The food was so incredibly good. Alessandro was very knowledgeable about the wines. We enjoyed our stay immensely. The whole staff was friendly and helpful. We would highly recommend a visit to this property.

We had such a wonderful stay at this lovely villa. The views of the Tuscan hills from our room were beautiful. Our Tuscan cooking class with Chef Lorenzo was one of the many highlights of our stay. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast each morning which was included and the two dinners we had were delicious. The restaurant was able to accommodate my gluten allergy with excellent gluten free options. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. We rented a car in Florence to get to the villa and took trips to wineries, Livorno, and San Gimignano.

Stayed here in July for one week while attending a friends wedding. It’s spit to base yourself while touring Tuscany. It’s very clean , staff are very helpful, the rooms have air con which is very important for this time of year. There is is an excellent restaurant here and also have an excellent wine list . Staff are very helpful with tips on which vineyards to visit . They have two pools where you can relax and read. I highly recommend this place.

There are many positives about this hotel. The location is unique, remote and pretty. The pools, despite the hotel having guests, were always quiet and are very pretty also. There are always therefore sunbeds available and towels provided. The food at the restaurant is very high in quality although we only ate there for one night. The staff are polite and helpful when asked questions. The bed was comfy and our room, a junior suite, a very good size with a nice terrace looking over the hills. All amenities including a safe but would consider taking own hairdryer as it's a very slow stuck to the wall style one!||We really loved the idea of the hotel being an old hamlet however it is much smaller (we know hamlets are small but the website implies more to look round) than you imagine and it isn't really possible to look around as every building, including the church, are in hotel use. The track down to the hotel is steep but not difficult to find and well sign posted. Takes a bit of getting used to. ||The reason we found this hotel confusing was the lack of atmosphere. We do not want nor are we used to loud hotels. In fact, we hardly ever stay in hotels due to not liking the forced atmosphere and events some put on however this place is so quiet it is almost eerie. It almost feels false in its Italian-ness due to some of the rules stuck around the place and the strange information about only one coffee at breakfast which we were told on arrival - we really aren't bothered as I don't even drink coffee but it seemed like a big deal! At breakfast and the only time we stayed for dinner it felt like no one could talk particularly loudly. All it needs is a tiny bit of quiet music to promote some chatter and atmosphere. I do not believe this would disrupt the tranqility of the place. We feel a little like tranquil and calm have been confused with soulless which is bizarre for a place with so much history. It's almost hard to explain as it is a very peaceful location which is good but missing something! ||Staff were always very good to guests but again it felt like they were trying to hide in the shadows. We love the Italian culture and friendliness shown in all the places we have visited and don't think this should be hidden.||To make the most of your trip you will definitely need a car. We would recommend staying here only a few nights and then perhaps moving lower down towards the vineyards as the hotel is higher up in the forest of the hills which means good but not typically post card Tuscan views. We visited many places from here and for that it is a very good base for Siena. The closest town Castellina is lovely and we ate there every other night. We would have lovely to do more runs, walks and bike rides but being up in the hills so much this isn't quite as suitable as we thought it would be.||All in all a very pretty and very quiet hotel but it's more of an older retreat than a small hotel so depends what you are looking for and for how long. Would recommend but for a few days only.

We absolutely loved this charming and rustic hotel! There are so many options in Tuscana and we are so glad we picked this one. We didn't arrive until 2am, which was quite past normal checkin. They called our booking agent to try to get a hold of us to give us instructions for when we arrived. The property is beautiful and quaint with rustic elements throughout. Our room came with breakfast and it included juices, pastries, fresh fruit and cappuccinos. It was also nice to have two options for pools, and we also loved sitting in the evenings in the courtyard with some wine. The staff was wonderful and so accommodating and friendly! Christine and Domitzia were great, we highly recommend and would love to come back!

This was the first stop on a two week vacation. We drove to the property as the sun was setting and the views along the rolling hills of Tuscany were fantastic! As we approached the turn to Tenuta Di Ricavo, it can be misleading because it was a gravel road, however, entering the property takes you back in time to a well-manicured property with old architecture. We were greeted by the front desk and the hospitality was an A+ from the start. We enjoyed dinner Saturday night on premise (I recommend making a reservation). The breakfast (included) is your typical European breakfast. There are two pools that are very quiet and the views from the property are amazing.

Yelp
Great till 2020...went here for over 20 years and suddenly it was closed at COVID time. I am not sure if it has re- opened. I love Chianti region- go back often. this lovely and charming place run by Christina and Alessandro and Alessandro Jr was a jewel of a place. charming spot and property, exquisite service and great food. I hope someone good will re- open it and bring it back to life. Christina - we miss you.

Yelp
I was very torn with my review and in the end decided to give it 4 stars. I thought it was romantic and charming but my husband disagreed. He thought it lacked the features of the advertised 4-star hotel for the price. The placement of the hotel is magical. Could not be better in fact. Situated on an old farm that has a very rustic feel to it. But beautiful, so beautiful I could not stop marveling. Everything was quite lovely and green outside. Trees and bushes very carefully trimmed. The placed is very much loved for. The front desk staff was very lovely. Showed us around and explained all the buildings and such. Our room was more of an actual house. A three room suite with two bedrooms and small sitting room. Very spacious, but unfortunately not a 4* quality as advertised. Bed, very uncomfortable and bathroom and shower are very outdated. I respect the "old" feel that they were going for, but some features could have been slightly more updated. Views were spectacular however and we concentrated on those luxuries. The breakfast was lovely and had a nice little spread. On the first day, we didn't eat until around closer to 10am and lots of choices such as eggs and bread were already gone. The terrace is very lovely and it's nice to bask in the sun while drinking your coffee. Speaking of coffee, they will make you an espresso drink when requested. One huge drawback was that there was no WiFi in the room. There is WiFi in the common area of the hotel, but not in the room.
