This Local Family Is Helping Travelers Explore the Great Himalaya Trails

"At Tenzing Hillary Airport in Lukla I landed on an incredibly short, L-shaped runway that has earned its reputation as one of the world’s most dangerous airports; sitting at about 9,350 feet, the approach is unnerving but the first sighting of the Himalayas during the descent was so spellbinding that I barely noticed the landing." - Gisela Williams Gisela Williams Gisela Williams writes about culture, design, travel, and sustainability for T: The New York Times Style Magazine, Travel + Leisure, and How to Spend It. Tenzing-Hillary Airport

Famous worldwide as the most dangerous airport in the World. A wonderful infrastructure, gateway to Everest, built by the financial support of Sir Edmund Hillary. The airport is small with a runway of almost 600 metres and can handle only Small Takeoff or Landing (STOL). You will find porters (highly recommended if you want a smooth and calm EBC trek) immediately outside the airport. While returning, you will face difficulties getting airline tickets so you would have to consult with your hotel or travel agency constantly.

Airport is very small but very efficient the runway is small just over 500 meters I was luck enough to get good and clear weather it took me around an 40 minutes to get my luggage check in and bored the plane. Mind you don’t try to take any stone as sovereign because they don’t allow you to carry it.this airport has got a helipad also attached to it

Lukla Airport – Gateway to the Himalayas Official Name: Tenzing-Hillary Airport Location: Lukla, Solukhumbu District, Nepal Elevation: 2,845 meters (9,334 feet) above sea level Lukla Airport is not just an airport—it’s an adventure in itself. Perched on the edge of a mountain and surrounded by the majestic Himalayas, it serves as the main entry point for trekkers and climbers heading to Mount Everest Base Camp. Named after Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, the first two people to summit Everest, the airport is both a tribute and a lifeline to this remote region. The runway is only 527 meters (1,729 feet) long and ends with a steep cliff on one end and a wall of rock on the other. The dramatic landscape, combined with thin mountain air and unpredictable weather, makes takeoffs and landings here an adrenaline-pumping experience. Only specially trained pilots are allowed to operate flights to and from Lukla.

Lukla Airport is a unique and exhilarating gateway to the Himalayas. Its short, challenging runway and stunning mountain views offer an unforgettable flying experience. As a critical hub for trekkers, the airport’s dramatic approach and departure are both thrilling and essential for accessing the remote Everest region. Despite its small size and high altitude, the airport efficiently handles a significant volume of traffic, contributing to the adventure of reaching one of the world’s most sought-after trekking destinations. The excitement of landing here, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, adds to the overall adventure of exploring the Himalayas

Heard so many horror stories about propeller plane flying to Lukla, better to go with helicopter. Short weather window everyday. Free wifi.

For me this was definitely one of the top highlights of my trip to Nepal. During the flight into Lukla Airport we were blessed with glimpses of the snow capped peaks of the Himalaya’s. On approach the runway seems somewhat short and sloping uphill. Luckily the local pilots are very skilled and experienced in their craft and the plane landed without incident. Flying in and out of Lukla Airport is something everyone should experience at least one in their lifetime.
