The fading artform of Teochew Puppet Opera - SilverKris

"Opened five years ago inside a renovated George Town shophouse by Ling Goh, a fourth-generation puppeteer, this small theatre and troupe stage traditional Teochew rod-puppet performances several times a month to help preserve an artform estimated at 1,000 years old that survives in Malaysia mainly in Penang. Shows involve about nine performers (puppeteers, singers and musicians) and rotate among more than 50 plays featuring recurring characters such as noblemen, monks, scholars, warriors and acrobats; the company intentionally selects plays that will engage younger audiences to encourage future interest. The handcrafted puppets—made of wood and clay and taking roughly two weeks each to produce—are manipulated with metal rods rather than strings, allowing greater precision of movement. Led by Ling Goh, who began performing at eight and inherited the troupe her mother founded in 1989, the venue frames its work as a cultural mission to protect and transmit Teochew puppetry." - Ronan O' Connell

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit! The experience was both educational and meaningful — you can really feel the passion and hard work that goes into preserving this beautiful part of Teochew culture. Zhi Kai was patient, knowledgeable, and very accommodating, especially with my grandma, who also enjoyed the visit a lot. It’s a shame that this traditional art form is slowly disappearing, but places like this keep it alive. I truly hope more people take the time to visit and appreciate it. Highly recommended!

I just saw the show tonight. It is amazing and very educational. This family has been preserved this tradition opera show for 5 generations. I can’t say enough about how great they are. Please go see the show yourself, and you will enjoy the whole show very much.

Such a fun and unique experience! It was my first time visiting a Chinese opera puppet museum, and I was super impressed by the amazing collection — all well-kept and full of character. The guide was friendly and told great stories about each puppet's background. I even got to try holding and playing with one! I also learned a lot about live Chinese opera, from its history to how the stage and backstage work. The best part? You can dress up in opera costumes and take photos on stage! If you're lucky, you might even catch a real practice session. Totally worth a visit!

Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates traditional performances and cultural heritage!

Anyone who is interested in the old puppet show. It's quite entertaining especially after a good breakfast or lunch nearby. Quite an attraction for everyone as they also provide costumes for both male and female for picture.
