On the Grid : Taqueria Tepango

"Places that look this nondescript always hide amazing food. Tepango is exactly one of these secret places. Entering the resturant you feel it’s been in the Navy Yard area forever, and it probably has. We regularly order the pork tacos and enchiladas. 3 tacos paired with a coke is a solid cheap meal." - Adam Brodowski & Clara Bunker

Tepango has been my favorite place for 13 years. Fed me through college (seriously the rice and beans is the only reason I survived) - celebrated my engagement there - now I live in Astoria but try to make the trip as often as I can to get my favorite dish, the fish wrap. Wonderful family, wonderful food - enjoy!

Google
I cannot emphasize enough how delicious and how attentive this restaurant is. It is my favorite place to eat for 15 years, and to this day I have no idea how they make their nachos so amazingly. They stay crunchy, but are cooked in with everything, and the cheese touches all of it.. I could go on. Thank you tepango!

Google
This is my favorite Mexican restaurant period. I've been ordering from them for years. Their cemitas are one of the best things you'll ever eat. The staff is always very nice and prompt. When I was facing the possibility of moving from the neighborhood, I was heartbroken thinking I'd be moving away from Tepango. Cannot thanks them enough for all the great meals.

Google
Food is authentic and fresh. Wasn’t really busy I came at 10:00pm. The presentation is spot on. Chef’s kiss! Will be coming back. It’s open 7days a week until 11pm. Really enjoyed the food here. Definitely recommend.

Google
I'm from Mexico and this has been the best Mexican experience in the neighborhood for sure. Place is really solid especially if you want more than just tacos. Mole is top notch and tortas/cemitas are incredible. Incredible vegetarian options too!

Google
Hole in the wall doesn’t do it justice but I can’t tell you how impressed I was with my al pastor burrito. Full of meat and chunks of pineapple, one of the better burritos I’ve had in a while. The chips seemed homemade but they tasted a little stale, that was my only minor complaint. If you don’t choose to dine inside, there are tables and benches a block away which was extremely convenient.

Google
One of the hidden gems of New York City. Tepango is My favorite Mexican restaurant. Their burritos are out of this world. The Super Taco dish is delicious. It is an authentic mexican restaurant run by a super friendly family. Burritos come with a small guacamole and pico de gallo and chips !!!

Google
I’ve been coming here for many years since I was a student at Pratt. Even after all those years, the food is still authentic, generous portions and reasonable price. So good!

Yelp
Simple, period! I just get tacos here, they actually have hard shell so... I'm real simple when it comes to Mexican food. I just want it to be good and the flavors be right. Food is always fresh, service is good and friendly. It's a walk in and out space so, the ambience is cool enough. I'm not sitting down but, the try to have it presentable for the people who are. My only issue is that they raise the prices a week after my discovery.... That's it lol

Yelp
My friend was in NYC from Miami and wanted to here. She went to Pratt and remembered how much she loved the place. Upon entering I knew this was not going to be a good experience. Went to the counter to order and the lady was scrolling on our phone and didn't notice us. I had to request assistance. We ordered our food to dine in. We tried to find a clean table to sit at but all the tables needed cleaning. The young lady cleaned our table after my request. I had the fried fish and it was not seasoned. It came with lemon so I used a lot of it. We also had the guacamole which was very spicy. The black beans and rice tasted stale to me. My friend had a beef burrito and said it was okay but not how she remembered it.

Yelp
Most authentic Mexican restaurant I've been to in NYC so far! Used to live in California for years, so this has been my go to spot!

Yelp
There wasn't anything "wrong", the food was genuinely terrible and the restaurants interior and shape matched the food. Stale chips, overcooked shrimp, food was way too greasy. There was like a slab of cheese thrown into the quesadilla. My partner got the same dish but vegetarian option instead and had the same result. I felt like I shouldn't have ate it afterward. Unfortunate, I was craving Mexican :(

E B.

Yelp
Ouch. The place needs help, quickly and badly. Tastes like authentic apathy and disappointment. It's best to go in with an N95 on as to not inhale any mold from the refrigerator you'll stand next to while ordering. Enjoy!!!

Yelp
We just happened on this restaurant on a Saturday night, and were super happy that we found it! The decor is unassuming, but don't let that hold you back from enjoying a delicious and freshly cooked Mexican dinner! They will take your order at the counter, and will bring out your meal for you. You can just smell the meat and onions being grilled freshly in the back while you wait for your food -- no spoon-filled food like that Mexican grill chain you know about! The carnitas tacos and chicken burrito we ordered were just so incredibly delicious. So well spiced, so tasty. Yum! Would absolutely love to go back. How about tonight?!!

Yelp
Got take out for Cinco de Mayo. This was a Yelp recommendation so we decided to try it. Not sure about the bad reviews I saw but we had no issues with our food. Everything was fresh and delicious. The tortilla chips were still warm in the brown paper bag and the guacamole was an added compliment to the chips. If you're looking for food on the go, this is the spot. Enjoy!

Yelp
This place is unassuming and casual, but the food is quite tasty and authentic. I ordered take out: Combo Mexico and horchata, of course. Horchata was sweet and refreshing, full of cinnamon-y taste. The drink also came in a larger size cup than other spots. Combo Mexico consists of a quesadilla, pork taco, tostada, flauta, and tortilla chips in a bed of guacamole. This was enough food to fill 2 large containers, and to have left overs. I think my favorite were the pork tacos, which were marinated in a wonderfully well-seasoned sauce, and also came with pineapple pieces. The pork was cooked to perfection, juicy, and succulent. There were 2 soft shell tortillas wrapped around the pork filling, which I thought was a bit excessive. I was satisfied with 1 tortilla shell. Next, I think I enjoyed the flauta and quesadilla equally. The flauta was delightfully crispy, with plenty of cheese on top and was also nicely melty. The quesadilla was huge and stuffed with yummy cheese. The outer shell was really good - slightly toasted and nice flavor. The tostada was decent. There was lettuce, tomato, sour cream, as well as cheese on a thin, crunchy tortilla. I think I would have liked it better if it had some kind of meat. Overall, it was a satisfying meal with generous portions and the pricing was very reasonable. I would certainly return at some point.

Yelp
I have eaten here in the past and its always been okay. I was disappointed this time but the food was edible, the steak was a little questionable, lacked seasoning and was very tough and there was very little of it. It was not horrible but there is way better Mexican food literally up the block.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and they never seem to disappoint. I always order the spicy chicken burrito and love how it has the fried cheese on top but most of all the salsa and guacamole and chips that come with it.

Laurie L.

Yelp
Staff was unfriendly, vegetables and guacamole was NOT fresh. Overall the place isn't in the best of shape.

Yelp
An ex pratt student coming back for a trip down memory lane, I have no idea how tepangos remained so consistent with their flavor but holy shit it hits the spot everytime

Dave L.

Yelp
Order a burrito bowl with carne enchilada (which the menu describes as pork chunks). The rest of the burrito was inline with your average but the carne enchilda was disgusting. All fat, no meat. If you order from here, definitely get a different meat.

Yelp
Stay far away. Place doesn't even look clean. Got me a simple chicken burrito from here for lunch and spent the next two days home from work with food poisoning!

Yelp
Location: Taqueria Tepango is right next to Pratt. Place has plenty tables. Food: had tepango burrito So good They have cheese on top of burrito... So good

Yelp
Love that I have a new favorite spot! I didn't think there were any authentic, and actually tasty, Mexican restaurants in my area (Flatbush) until I found this gem. The food was on point, the service was friendly, fast and made me feel welcome. I ordered the chicken nachos, chicken soft tacos (they come with 2 hard or soft), rice & beans, guacamole w/chips, sweet plantain, fries and a steak torta. This was feeding 4 people and could have definitely fed 5 or 6. Everything was so good, and I knew it would be since you can smell the greatness when you're at the counter ordering. I did call in before driving over to check and they do take Apple Pay, which was a life saver since I didn't have cash on me. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
as a person with actual taste buds and a good pallet, this food was hot garbage. ordered an Al pastor burrito - mostly rice and beans and dong know where the meat was , burrito was swimming in liquid , don't know where that was from because I asked all sauces to be removed. Was charged more than what the menus around the restaurant and their counter says. if you value spending money on good food , this spot isn't it!

Yelp
The WORST FOOD EVER !!!! People stay away don't waste your money here!! I order $56 worth of food that literally had to go to the trash. Order 2 order of Chicken Hard shell tacos and the chicken was Charred it was not edible. An Order of Enchiladas which was extremely spicy, and to top it off cheese tasted Sour. Rice had no taste what's so ever. AVOID !!

Steven B.

Yelp
Beyond disgusting- actually dangerous. NOT A JOKE: I got a chicken quesadilla- now would be a good time to mention- HOW DO YOU FUCK UP SOMETHING SO SIMPLE? They did, of course. I had like two bites of it, greasy, way too many onions, shitty ingredients- there was too much of it, tasted awful even though I was starving, etc. I walked away with 90 per cent of it untouched as a 'FUCK YOU' to the restaurant. I was very angry over wasting 15 dollars on this rancid food, foul tasting food. It was made with pure hatred and contempt for the customer. Little did I know my nightmare was only just beginning ... it's been 3 days now of severe cramping, bloating and abdominal pain - so stabbing it's brought me to tears and moaning out loud- serious diarrhea, all over the 4th of July weekend too. THIS FROM TWO BITES. Good thing I listened to my gut and walked away, if I had eaten more I'm sure I'd be hospitalized or dead. It's the first time I'm going to call the health department. You know what really gets me- all the places I loved that were awesome- and how they're all closed because of the lockdowns. AND YET, THIS PLACE SURVIVES. Only the good die young, eh? DO NOT EAT HERE EVER. I'm gonna demand my money back.

Hannah B.

Yelp
Favorite burritos! The melted cheese on top is amazing. The menu prices are a bit out of date but it's worth it. Very quick takeout.

Yelp
This is a delicious, low-key restaurant for excellent Mexican food in Clinton Hill. The spare lighting and limited tables tell you that Tepango is better built for delivery than an eat-in meal, but I still enjoyed my time at the brick and mortar restaurant. The service was friendly, and I appreciated the complementary chips and salsa in addition to my burrito order. The salsas here are fresh and spicy - certainly not from a Tostito's can - and it went great with the thin, crispy tortilla chips. Now to the burrito, which was excellent. The beans and rice were cooked perfectly, and I love how there was *actually* chicken tinga inside. I often avoid chicken tinga in restaurants because it tends to come out bland, but here they season it right, such that it comes out tender, juicy, and spicy. On top of that, they melt the cheese right on top of the burrito and put guacamole and pico de gallo on the side. Oh, and if you're not that hungry, this burrito could easily feed people. All this, with a drink, for $12 is a great deal. Should you be in the Clinton Hill area, Taqueria Tepango is an excellent choice for Mexican food.

Yelp
someone needa change the girl who answers the phone, she doing too much like i just asked to change one of my orders and she gives me mad attitude... either pay her enough to deal with customers or change the person. The delivery guy to!!! my delivery came all messy and on top he as well gave me attitude and took tip on his own. i gave him a $10 and asked for change so that i was able to tip him, he decided to tip himself and just give me $4 back. when i told him what the hell!? he just walked away. never getting food from ya, food was trash... all soggy and burnt.

Yelp
It's so great to find a taste of home (Texas) in Brooklyn. I was on my way to have drinks, but I hadn't eaten in hours. The reviews of the bar I was headed to mentioned a great Mexican restaurant across the street to eat at after drinking so I popped in for a quick dinner! The people running the place were really welcoming. The food...whew...the chips and salsa had me hooked immediately. The green salsa...I can't stop thinking about it. I'll be back soon. I couldn't make up my mind because I was too hungry so I just went with a simple beef fajita wrap. It was delicious! I scarfed it really really fast. The price point was perfect, too...I ordered Mexican takeout the other night and got three mini tacos for $14...STUPID. The place delivers for the price. Mexican food just shouldn't be expensive, the end. It should be tasty and it should be affordable.

Yelp
I love cheap food & I love simple ethnic food so Mexican always tops my list! This is a great place for solid Mexican. Goes without saying that I'm a big fan of Clinton Hill and off the beaten path places. We tried the chile relleno, cemita chicken tinga and the chicken enchiladas. If you've got a big big hunger - get the enchiladas! Tons of rice and beans, I dare you to finish your plate. The chile relleno was so-so. But the cemita chicken tinga was very good - lots of mayo and with a bit of spicy hot kick, and chunks of whole smoked peppers. Next I go back would definitely love to try those big ass quesadillas - table next to us had them and they looked really good. Plus I have a weakness for al pastor tacos, so would have to try that too. Be warned that on a cold day, this place is really chilly. So maybe ask them for extra hot sauce to warm you up! lol. Don't expect anything fancy, but service was very friendly. Of course you get free salsa and chips while you wait. Plus several imported Mexican juices (Jumex). Credit card min is $10 and since this place is cheap that might not be enough for one persons bill.

Yelp
This place is delishhhhhh! Tostada con queso, Cheese quesadilla (the cheese is like an amazing mix of flavor), veggie enchiladas, and the chips and salsa are definite wins! Excited that I live right by :) Also I agree with others that the service is super whack, but I'll put up with the counter person being the worst for that drinkable salsa.

Yelp
After moving to Brooklyn in January, I knew I'd need to find a Mexican neighborhood staple. Well, five months and 10+ trips later, sufficed to say I've found it. I. Love. This. Place. The interior is quaint and modest, but the food is anything but! I typically dine in and I'm supplied with chips and two types of salsa (I like to mix them.) I've tried several menu items, but my absolute favorite is the cecina (salty steak) burrito. Their burritos are some of the largest I've ever had. I always have leftovers (which is unreal considering the $10 price tag.) I have always had fantastic service. I guess technically I'm a regular now, since the sweet young lady who works here asks me if I want "the usual." I wouldn't have it any other way.

Yelp
This place is absolutely delicious. Ive had a couple different burritos and guac and chips and hot sauce - all outstanding.

Yelp
Wow, Taqueria Tepango is simply pretty darn cool. The ambiance is awesome. Taqueria Tepango has a wonderful Al Pastor Tacos, this dish will blow you away with its unbelievable taste and flavor. Team is very welcoming and definitely will help you with everything. Taqueria Tepango - I'll be back, i hope sooner than later.

Yelp
Appalling service. Would not recommend. Ordered food over the phone, got a call back 40 minutes later telling us the address was too far and they wouldn't deliver. They then just hung up and wouldn't pick up my calls after - although they had my credit card details. Wanted to support them at the moment even though they're not on seamless but won't do it again.

Yelp
Great mexican food, small but warm and friendly place. Their menu has many options and the food is affordable but very delicious. The staff is kind and the service is great. I absolutely recommend this place.

Jessica M.

Yelp
Flavors like no other! Slightly more authentically Mexican versus other take-out style spots. My favorite go-to is the Combo Mexico. I spend many days craving their vegetarian tostada of all things (meat-eater here)!!
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
I'm Mexican and grew up in California, I was looking for a little taste of home while visiting NYC. I ordered the chicken and al pastor soft tacos. The price was very good for the amount of food I got (I was expecting smaller, street tacos and instead got four full sized tacos). Al pastor was tasty and the chicken had a nice chili and cumin flavor. I don't know if they make their tortillas fresh in house or if they get them from somewhere that do, but they were my favorite part of the meal. So soft and delicious. Very friendly service too!
google avatar

Chanell H.

Yelp
I eat here EVERY TIME I'm in town. Never been disappointed. Authentic Mexican at its finest. I'm pretty consistent with my order. I live for their shrimp burrito. That's all I've ever ordered....that and the guacamole!
google avatar

Johnny B.

Yelp
Wow..... Ever since I moved to the city from California, I've had so much trouble trying to find good tasting authentic mexican food, until I discovered this amazing place. Very cheap and very good. I highly recommend. I'm going to be here so much they're going to start remembering my name lol, this DEFINITELY satisfies my california mexican food craving. I highly recommend trying this place out and getting the burritos! simply AMAZING!
google avatar

Nada H.

Yelp
Okay so who ever gave this place less than 5 stars clearly has no taste buds! This place is a gem located in the heart of Brooklyn! The burritos are a must!! They have a layer of cheesy goodness. I'm not exaggerating when I say I wish I lived closer, I would probably order it on a weekly basis. Try it out once and I'm sure you'll be back!
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Simple and yet amazing Mexican food. I've lived in Los Angeles and New York now and while there are few Mexican joints that are LA quality this place gives it a run. Really good food and drinks.
google avatar

Oscar S.

Yelp
Just takeout and delivery during covid and it is SO GOOD. I got a chorizo burrito and it came with guacamole, pico de gallo, and some salsa verde. Burrito had rice beans and sour cream and was covered in cheese - all for $11. It is around a mile away from me but I will definitely be making the walk here again.

George L.

Yelp
Incredible food. Please support this business. 10/10 Would highly recommend! Where else do you get free chips and guac with a burrito the size of a newborn child???
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
Was a little skeptical at first because the restaurant looked closed and empty, but could not be more satisfied with my experience. The food was amazing, with plenty of options and friendly staff. Definitely will be making this place a regular go-to!

Jalynn M.

Yelp
Food was nasty as hell. I ordered 4 tacos and they gave me 3 it was hella cold so I ain't walk back. The cashier gave my cousin mad attitude when all he was asking was why the price was that price. Never again.
google avatar

Yelp
Delivery nightmare but food is good. I called after waiting an hour and a half and the woman said it was out for delivery. I waited another 30 minutes and still no food. So I called again and told them I was waiting two hours. The response I got was that the food had been delivered. If the food was delivered it certainly wasn't delivered to me! It took another 15 minutes to get the person on the other end of the phone (who was yelling at me the entire time) to MAYBE accept the fact that I was telling the truth. They finally told me "well THIS time we will send you another order but just THIS time". Oh wow I'm so honored by your generosity...it was their delivery drivers mistake so they should make up for the mistake not give me such a hard time. Mistakes happen but don't try blaming it on the customer. Anyway I got the Tinga burrito and it was very good.
google avatar

Wendy G.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food! Very nice people and they served us immediately, will deff come back again!

Yelp
No other burrito will ever compare. TT is the real deal- the best mexican in the city.

Yelp
This was the first place I went out to eat when I moved to Fort Greene (was taken by my new roommates who've lived in the neighborhood for 4 years). They literally said to me, hey, this is why you're going to get fat. Enjoy. Also, they deliver. Also, don't judge it by how it looks. LOL. But seriously- the decor, the building, the servers, the menu, it's all very thrown together and random and not high-end, but the food is freaking ridiculous, and not that expensive, and they give you a TON of food. My two friends has platters, that came with like 300 things and rice and beans. I went with the carnitas cemita, which is basically a torta with cheese. FANTASTIC. Also, it has an A rating, so, it's clean! And, it's BYOB, which is also amazing. I'll be back ASAP.
google avatar

Michele L.

Yelp
Honestly, love the hard shell tacos/super tacos here. Nothing to complain about the food. Also, if you dine in, they give you free nachos and salsa. The only reason it isn't getting five is because when I ate there the last time with friends, (who didn't seem to like the decorations and style of this fine establishment) we saw a huge insect. We couldn't really tell whether it was a cockroach or not, but when the issue was presented to them, they didn't even try to kill it right away. They waited a while before cleaning up the dishes at the table next to us and then preceded to kill it. I get it; it's NYC--there are cockroach-like creatures everywhere, but at least try to hide that y'all have it.

Jesse G.

Yelp
This is the place I miss since moving from Brooklyn. Chicken Tings Burrito. That's all you need to know. BYO ambience. Miss this place dearly.

Tara F.

Yelp
Updated Review: this place used to be amazing. It's really gone downhill. Delivery times are often 30 minutes to an hour later than what they tell you it will be. When the food arrives, it's cold and soggy. Original review: When this place is good, it's truly amazing. Quality can be a bit hit or miss though. We order take from here regularly have had to throw out the salsa a few times because it was not good and tasted like it was fermented. If they could keep the quality level consistent, this would be a 5-star place no questions asked!
google avatar

Raymond C.

Yelp
My favorite comfort food spot. The burritos are amazing, I recommend the al pastor! My friends love the chicken fajitas and shrimp burrito as well.
google avatar

Yelp
I said I would never go again, but I lied. Sometimes I do crave the burrito, and I just can't refuse it. Tepango still has some fantastic burritos, and good prices. Nothing good enough to erase the distaste I have for the place, but it is slowly regaining my appreciation. Food still takes forever, whether it's being delivered or served dine-in, and I know better than to expect good service (or even simple cordiality). Weekend evenings are the worst, but weekdays aren't so bad.
