I had the best time at this store talking to the locals. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the dear lady I talked to that time I visited but I loved all the conversations I had with everyone at that store.
Once again my trip out to Terlingua would not be complete without stopping at this local gem. This store has all the souvenirs you could need when visiting the area. They got mugs, shot glasses, shirts, hats, keychains, etc. I collect bumper stickers and I was not disappointed by the selection they had. They have a big selection of local products and support lots of local artist by selling their products there. This store is big so you might want to spend some time browsing here.
The store also sells water, bottle sodas, snacks, candy, and other food items. If you need some bug repellant they have limited stock available so be prepared. Another good thing is that they have AC in the building! Praise the lord lol. The porch on this store is super long and there are chairs outside where the locals like to go and sit down at the end of the day and mingle. I would have enjoyed the front porch more if there were rocking chairs or a hammock to take a nap but that's just me. Since there is not a lot to do a lot of the locals like to come to hang out on the porch of the store and play cards, dominos, play musical instruments, talk to visitors, hang out with their dogs and have a couple of drinks. They did not have a first aid kit or any kind of anti-itch cream for bug bites but that ok because I already had some with me but just a heads up if you are looking for that in here.
Ok, so the reason I gave this place a five star was because of its staff. I went in there to get a map of the self-guided tour of the town. I started talking to the cashier about the town and it just took off from there. I asked her what time the starlight theater would open and that when I found out I had a couple of hours to kill before it was set to open. So with no place to hurry up too, I started asking her more questions about the town, about herself, the big bend tourism, the restaurants in the area, cell phone signal out here, mail delivery, etc. I spent nearly 3 hours talking to this lady!! I enjoyed our conversation and all the things I learned from her about the town, herself and the big bend area. I originally went to eat dinner at the starlight theatre but I found out they weren't gonna be open for a couple more hours so I decided to just kick it at the trading store next door. One thing i learned from this lady was that out here there is no need to rush anywhere and having a conversation with someone is the best way to pass the time.
What I learned about the area from the cashier lady at the store:
The building is the oldest of its kind in the southwest region (or the oldest in Texas) It started off as the main operating offices for the mining company when they were digging for mercury. It eventually combined with a general store so the miners would go to the office and get their checks and buy provisions for their family. After the mining town went downhill the building became a post office. At one point it was also the sheriff's office and it housed the town's jail. The jail cells are located outside and over time they were turned to the bathrooms. I would encourage you to use the bathrooms and see what the cells use to be. Its kinda fun and they look cute on the inside.
The building is old and considers historical so there are no indoor plumbing so the bathrooms had to be added outside where the jail cells use to be.
Overall this is the place to buy you some sweet tea and sit on the porch and watch the world go by. This part of Texas is truly magical.
