How Airlines and Airports Use Your Data, From Security to the Flight Itself

"Since opening in October 2017, Singapore Changi International Airport’s Terminal 4 has stood apart from the rest of the award-winning airport’s terminals—not only because of its food emporium, Peranakan-inspired shophouse facades, and boulevard of 160 fig trees, but also because of its “self-service system,” where passengers can move through the check-in, bag drop, immigration, and boarding processes typically without interacting with a single human. At unmanned luggage booths, your photo is taken and digitally matched against your passport before you can drop your bag off. Your photo is snapped again at immigration, and with a match, the automatic security doors swing open and you’re free to go, all within seconds."

Yelp
As airports go Changi nails it. The security was a breeze to navigate, and once through to the other side there is enough shopping and dining to keep you sated while you wait for your flight. It is extremely clean and has enough space that it does not feel crowded

Yelp
Completely disjointed from the rest of Changi airport. I arrived on the train from the city. The signage at the station is abysmal and confusing. It continues once you get into terminal 2. The infrequent shuttle pickups is ridiculous. Hopefully they will eventually get a tram to link T4 to the rest of the airport.

Yelp
Very efficient airport with sleek design. Staff was very friendly and we were able to navigate through the terminal with ease.

Yelp
Terrific food court. Teochew porridge, chicken rice, charsiu and roast pork. I love the Yong Tau Fu stall. They give you a free flow of soya beans. The ice Kachang lady is great. She made mine without syrup with only gula Melaka. Yum! Chendol isn't bad but has uneven ice chunks, jelly is frozen. Comfortable seating. I napped on a couch! Self check-in kiosks with helpful ground staff to assist.

Yelp
Your mind will be intrigued by the revolving silver sculptures while you are checking in for your flight. Then you will be mesmerized by the effortless mural changes as you pass through security. Being a secure area you are not allowed to take photos or videos. One is an alabaster jungle scene with butterflies fluttering around in a small space. It changes several other times to different scenes but the cutest was cartoon maybe gloved hands moving luggage along and it was SO cute I think there were cute cartoon like penguins helping along with a bear on a cart moving his way to where the action was. Once inside the terminal they have many beautiful things to see but the most mind blowing to me is the ones with people in the scenes then evolves to the dragon. There are shops, food, almost a mall in size unlike any airport that has shops on both sides of the walkway. I am now at Incheon International Airport and the past two days wished the restaurants abd places to visit couod be posted on Yelp but not a chance.

Yelp
This is the newest terminal in the airport. Let me tell you, the toilets are AMAZING. Some of them have bidets! There is a food court upstairs and if you happen to eat too much food and need to take a dump, the bidet will give you butt a nice wash. Now let's talk about the food court. There is a good variety of food there, I personally like eating at the HK stall which has delicious breakfast congee. There is also a Starbucks and McDonalds. The Starbucks in the airport does not accept Starbucks cards by the way. Once you go inside the terminal, you can kill time by playing games at the entertainment center. They have a pin ball machine, 2 arcade games, fooseball and even an Xbox. You don't have to pay for these games. I forgot to mention that there are so many automated passport machines- scan your passport and thumb and you are through! No lines!

Yelp
This is the most amazing airport I have ever stepped foot in. There were real trees growing out of holes in the carpet by the boarding gates! It is impeccably clean, and looks very new. From any of the terminals you can visit the Jewel which has a mall and indoor waterfall. Unfortunately my flight was very early in the morning, so the waterfall wasn't on yet. This airport is also very efficient, so for international flights you only have to be there 2 hours in advance compared to LAX which is 3 hours in advance.

Yelp
Changi Airpot is rated the best airport in the world consistently. If I could live at an airport, it would be Changi Airport. Though, please do not do that as I think there are laws dissuading individuals to do so. To me, Terminal 4 is designed to be simplistic. Everything looks as if it is streamlined to make your flight go without a hitch. There are nice restaurants to dine at as well as some good stores to go shopping. What I appreciate about T4 is the openness the terminal offers its travelers. You know how sometimes a terminal can make you feel claustrophobic? I did not get that feeling being inside this terminal. As much as I like T4, the only thing that I find to be a drawback is that the terminal is not connected to the Jewel. If you want to go to the Jewel from T4, you would have to exit the terminal and take a shuttle to Terminal 2. That said, weigh the cost and benefits of exiting the terminal, going through security and amount of time available. Awe. T4 needs the love that its brother terminals gets from everyone.

Yelp
This airport would be a solid 5++++ short one design flaw in my personal humble Yelping opinion. I have never Yelped about an airport while sitting in that actual airport, but I am doing just that today being at the Changi International Airport Terminal 4 in Singapore. And quite honestly, everything about this shiny new terminal that only opened in late October 2017 is really excellent. Really one of the best airports I have been through in Asia. It has all the right things...wide layout, incredibly well stocked retail outlets selling everything from Korean skincare to leather goods to books, expansive food offerings, bright lighting and the really the most gracious Singaporian employees a city could want showcasing this great city. The immigration upon departure is completely automated and self serve. The baggage screening is the most advanced I have ever seen on the planet...no need to remove laptops, fully electronic conveyor belt, friendly staff helping along the way and guiding you at every step. Not to mention about 20 lines to move things along as quick as possible. Well done! CARPET? REALLY? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? My only let down is with the carpet throughout the building. Carpet? It is the 21st century and travelers are "wheeling" along more than ever. My emphasis on the word "wheeling." Being the type of traveler that always carries on and never checks a bag, the type of traveler that I am usually moving quickly through the gawkers holding up traffic, the type of traveler that spends money on great well made luggage that is compliant with all global guidelines for size inside an airplane cabin. But what 21st century piece of luggage does not have wheels? With that, the carpet can be a pain in the rump to drag your wheeled luggage along. It does not effortlessly wheel along as it should. If you are a backpack carrying traveler, have no worries, you are all set. But short the carpet mistake by some designer who laid out all the other beautiful design elements of this new terminal just perfectly (maybe that guy or girl has never really traveled much through airports...just a thought?), this really is a great airport.

Yelp
Efficient, modern, lots of seating, trees inside and the resident sparrows too. Loads of shopping and restaurants. Huge floor to ceiling windows, fast WiFi with password obtained at kiosks. Really comfortable at all times I've been there. Clean.

Yelp
What a nice and clean airport! This one is simple to navigate and efficient. Even the immigration line moved pretty quickly. The sign says that I will be able to use my thumbprints, captured at the booth during ingress, to depart via the automated egress gates. I'll update after I see that in action, but all other reviews and my experiences thus far indicate that it will be pretty seamless. From getting my bag from baggage claim to getting into a taxi, it was at most 10 minutes. There are plenty of kiosks for getting a WiFi password generated so you can be connected while you're here. Signage is clear and there were plenty of staff available to assist with questions. The duty free shops are large and well-lit. They're maybe not on the scale of HKG for sheer volume, but the quality is there and they had many lines to make checking out simple. I don't tend to shop at airports, but I watched the processing and was impressed with the efficiency.

Yelp
One of the BEST Airport's in the World! Beautiful Lovely Sexy and Elegant design both interior and exterior! I Love it so much!!!

Yelp
This terminal sets the bar. An airport terminal that makes you want to travel just so you can go there. If you've seen the new interior of the international terminal at LAX then you're half way to Changi T4, with the added bonus of no challenging TSA experience. The terminal felt more like a cool contemporary hotel. Interesting to the eye, eclectic furnishings and modern. Free wifi, multiple convenient charging points, office space... plenty of good local and international food choices from a 24 hour food court through to mid-range. Even the immigration and security experience felt unreal: like I was somewhere in the future. Sleek, funky, clean... and smiles all round. Looking forward to my next trip to Singapore!

Yelp
What I really like about this terminal is how spacious and clean it is. I like the water dispenser area which is similar to Hong Kong airport with the choice of water temperature (cold, warm and hot), plus a spout meant for filling up bottles. No more wet bottles. Yay. It feels spacious now mostly because there are just not many travelers using it at moment. There were plenty of seats/sleep loungers available when I was there. It is fully automated - from checking in for boarding passes to checking in the luggage to even boarding the plane. Visitors who had registered upon arrival could also use the auto immigration check point. As one yelper mentioned, you no longer need to remove your laptop or ipad from the bag when going through the security x-ray check. You will also walk through the x-ray machine similar to those in the US where you need to raise your hands in the air. At the boarding area, you scan your boarding pass and enter the gate. There will still be someone there to guide the process but they will no longer check your boarding passes. It all sounds very nice and fancy, but frankly I still prefer a human touch, and to be able to talk to a person. Oh, I also saw a big "irobot" cleaning the floor of the arrival hall. I like the Peranakan theme in the restricted area, with a small museum too. The DFS shopping is not a lot, and the food court upstairs is not very good. Skip that and go to the Peranakan area where you will see Curry Times and Heavenly Wang. Still not the best of options but way better than the food court. There are several pinball and arcade machines scattered around but they are not free. Boo. As with the other terminals, there are many electrical outlets to charge your devices.

Yelp
I like this terminal and loving the move by Air Asia and Cathay Pacific to this terminal. It's clean and has a good sense of space. I love how everything's automated from check in, immigration and even boarding. Also love the mints at immigration upon arrival. Only issue is that it's not directly connected to the MRT but there's a free shuttle to the other terminals - but plan accordingly I guess.

Yelp
Lots to do at this airport. A wonderful experience. Even the Priority Pass lounges here are nice.

Yelp
Terminal 4 is like one of the high tech airports. You can just walk up to the machine, scan your passport and be done in under 3 mins. There is a food court on the second floor if you feel like grabbing one list bite of your hainan chicken. Security was super fast and after you pass security it's like you've entered a mall. Like a real mall. This airport puts US airports to shame! Everything was so beautiful and clean and it feels like you can totally just arrive early just to explore more of this terminal.

Yelp
Super modern airport I must say. Very automated check in, immigration and pasport control, even the security scanner can determine which hand carry needed inspection and which one didn't. Nice temperature and ambiance, nice shopping, nice eating places too. This airport seems smaller than the other terminal but very pleasant to be there while waiting for boarding of our flight. Oh yes, strong wifi throughout this terminal.

Yelp
Shiny new Terminal at Changi Airport. Lots of shopping and dining places. Plenty picture perfect spots. Plenty comfortable seating areas. Simply amazing! Fun. Lovely. Useful.

Yelp
Superb place, but they need to think of the way of transporting the passanger better from one Terminal to another. Shuttle bus? That's so old school! Think of passengers with 2 big luggage + 1 hand carry or old people or kids

Yelp
Very promising layout to this new terminal. Per some staff it opened 4 days ago and is still working out the kinks. Automated immigration was incredibly easy, no exit stamp though. They do need better signage it's not always clear how to progress. Amenities are nice, no priority pass affiliated lounge yet though. Incredibly clean and modern inside. Would look forward to travelling through here again in the future.

Yelp
So beautiful terminal. It likes a mall here. Dont shop anythinf on your last day in Singapore. Just go straight here few hours before your flight and enjoy. They even have uniqlo here, not to mention tons of liquor options and cosmetics and perfumes

Yelp
It's really sad, but I feel like Terminal 4 does everything right EXCEPT the essentials. Firstly, what everyone has mentioned is correct. The terminal looks amazing. No doubt about that. The problem is that this terminal is only connected to everything else by a shuttle bus. It's so inaccessible compared to every other terminal. As a traveler, the most basic function of an airport is to get me in and out quickly. Terminal 4 adds an unnecessary delay because the transport planning was poorly thought out. The self-check in was interesting too, but there weren't enough staff around to help. Again, another core function that wasn't adequately looked at. Terminal 4 feels like one of those pretentious fine dining restaurants with all the bells and whistles, but the food itself just doesn't taste that great. What a tragedy. It could have been so much better.

Yelp
T4 has been an excruciatingly painful experience. First of all, the silly self-service kiosks cannot print more than 2 flight tickets or luggage tags at a time for us on 02/12. There were no signs informing us of that and we only discovered it when we checked in our remaining party of 7 out of 9 at the kiosk which printed out two tickets. We were then told when we sought assistance that the remainder of our tickets would be printed at the passport check. As we were doing that, we discovered that the 2 from our party who checked in earlier were told they could check in up to 80kg of luggage so they unknowingly checked their hand carry bags in as well. When we attempted to checked in our bags, we were them told that there is no longer sufficient allowance and had to purchase additional allowance at the counter at a much higher price. Once those who checked in earlier had dropped their bags, there is no way to retrieve them to check in the correct bags. ***We spoke with airport staff and there are no plans to fix the systems to print tickets and luggage tags for more than two people. This is a permanent limitation in their systems.*** Next, when we attempted to refill our water bottles before the flight, two of them fell through a large crevice through the wall. We frantically tried to retrieve them before our flight and were told when we sought assistance that they would be waiting for us at the information counter upon our return today. Finally, when we returned on 10/12, we discovered that the bottles were moved to T2. We also discovered that contrary to all common sense, no report of the bottles nor the hole in the wall were made. We had to split our family up to recover the bottles only to be scolded at the taxi stand for trying to re-enter the airport to proceed to T2 from T4. Instead, we had to proceed to a door not more than 10m away! At T2, I filed a formal report so that the hole can be closed up to avoid recurrence. Advice to avoid the problems we encountered if you must use T4: 1. Book tickets for 2 people at a time. This will avoid confusion regarding check-in allowances and print all the tickets and luggage tags they need; and 2. Make multiple trips to refill water bottles at the fountain rather than place any on the fountain. The trips through T4 were ruinous bookends to an otherwise lovely holiday in Thailand. One would think from this experience that Changi is deliberately discouraging travelers from using T4 or set up T4 to work only for those traveling singly or in pairs, not for families.

Yelp
Flying out of T4 for the first time today. The whole check in procedure was very fast and straightforward. It's very easy to locate services and the ambience is friendly and welcoming. The whole airport experience is very enjoyable!
