Terrabona Nature & Vineyards, Boaventura, Madeira - Explore & Book

"There's something primeval about Madeira's north coast. Gnarled mountains cloaked in dense laurisilva forest tumble past steep ravines into the Atlantic Ocean, with a few smallholdings and scattered huts perched on what little flat land there is. Descending a single track lane below Boaventura, I felt as if I'd gone back a decade with each hairpin bend. So I was all the more astonished to find this sleek, new, eco-minded micro-resort, tucked between terraced vineyards and a triangle of foaming sea. From the road, the only sign of it is a minimalist grey cube house, the Design Villa. But beyond that are three more self-catering suites (or 'Wine Houses') tucked inside the tiered mountainside, one on each level for maximum privacy. Each has a cosy sitting room with kitchenette, a kingsize bedroom with freestanding bathtub, and an all-glass, oak-slatted facade facing the quasi-Amazonian jungle opposite. Outside are fat beanbags and a parasolled table for leisurely breakfasts or starlit dinners. And on the bottom level, perched above a mini gorge, is a sleek little heated pool and a secret sauna - utter bliss after a day's hiking. Terrabona is the passion project of Marco and Maria Joao, two charismatic ex-bankers based in Funchal, who will put the final sparkle on your stay with informal wine tastings (from their own harvest), sociable weekend suppers, a yoga session, or a sunset cruise on their private yacht. A spectacular and truly unique escape. Highs Utterly romantic, and perfect honeymoon material within 4 hours’ flight of the UK, at any time of year The suites are sumptuous and eco-friendly: like a blissful burrow with 5* comforts It offers a new level of secluded luxury on an island known more for mainstream winter sun We loved soaking in our windowside tub, with eucalyptus and rosemary oils Dramatic coastal, mountain and levada hikes abound; or borrow e-bikes if you prefer Lows This not a cheap holiday - but it's worth every euro No kids under 16: this is a couples' retreat It's 45 mins from the airport, or an hour from Funchal, the last part on winding roads And 15 mins' drive to (good) restaurants, unless you cook for yourself or book dinner with your hosts" - Michael Cullen

Terrabona is an excellent choice for those looking to stay off the beaten path and explore the northern side of Madeira. From the moment our stay began until the end, Marco and Maria were the most welcoming and hospitable hosts. You can tell how much effort they put into the villas themselves, the property, and the guest experience. The views are spectacular and the property perfectly blends into the landscape. You will definitely need a car for traveling around the island (fellow U.S. drivers, just know there are some narrow, windy roads to navigate…), but Terrabona is a great starting point for hikes and other outdoor activities. It is also great for relaxation with yoga, a Finnish sauna, infinity pool, art supplies, and more. We highly recommend the hosted dinners - you will get to try local delicacies, meet fellow guests, and enjoy the unabated stargazing towards the end of your evening. Breakfast was also delicious, with local products and tasty cake that is baked daily. Overall, we highly recommend Terrabona!

We had an absolutely wonderful experience at the Terrabona wine tasting. The staff greeted us warmly and took the time to explain the vineyard and wines in detail. The views were breathtaking, and the wine, paired with delicious food, was exceptional. It was fantastic value for the price, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Madeira. I’d definitely go back!

We did not actually stay in the hotel but were there for a wine tasting. That was already quite the pleasure, and allows you to meet the hosts and really feel the passion and joy they have with their wine and hospitality project. The wine tours in general on Madeira are not the usual technical wine tours so don’t expect that. What you get here instead though is the very personal stories behind their wines, and feeling as if you’re enjoying little bites and wine with friends on a beautiful relaxing afternoon with gorgeous views. Maria and Marco are the sweetest pair - and I can imagine you’d be pampered by them if you stay here as hotel guests too. My partner actually forgot his camera bag behind and they went above and beyond to even drive out to meet us along the way to return it to us when they didn’t have to. Hospitality and kindness truly left a mark here!

A really peaceful spot on a small winery with just four private villas. The place is run by a lovely couple from Funchal who made us feel very welcome. The villa was comfortable and had everything we needed.||Breakfast was great every morning, and the group dinner one night was honestly one of the best meals we had on the island — simple, fresh, and really well done. The whole atmosphere was quiet and relaxing, and it felt like a nice break from the busier parts of Madeira. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for something low-key and personal.

My husband and I were very fortunate to snag a private afternoon wine tasting at this property. It was a particularly pleasant surprise. The wine was outstanding, the snack pairing was exceptionally curated, and the property was so well designed. Such attention to privacy and tranquility. We would love to stay overnight during a future trip. They really are doing something special here.

This place is an absolute “gem” - it’s set in a beautiful little valley views of which are even more stunning from the infinity pool and sauna. The rooms are scattered amongst vines and are really private. The breakfasts another level of thought and delicious-ness (most products sourced locally). Marco and Maria are welcoming and friendly. There are breath taking walks short drives away. This place really is special and worth visiting.

We spent four days on the north side of Madeira in a truly beautiful place and accommodation. The owners hoped to surprise us and despite having high expectations, they certainly succeeded. Terrabona is beautifully situated in a quiet and lush green environment. Through the vines, we saw the mountain in the clouds on the left and had a view of the sea on the right. We were warmly welcomed, the fridge is filled daily with plenty of a variety of freshly made treats (where can I import those...), the villa as well as the surrounding area are impeccably designed and every detail is attended to. Quality in materials, products and service comes first. Absolutely fantastic is that the dishes are done while you are enjoying a lovely walk. Optimal use of your time and a true sense of vacation and luxury. We enjoyed our stay and can wholeheartedly recommend it.

We loved every minute of our time at Terrabona. The location is beautiful and the surrounding environment was so calm; we felt very refreshed after our stay. We often would have a long, lazy breakfast so we could enjoy the peaceful setting. The group dinner on Wednesday was also a great experience with excellent food and conversation. The entire staff was very friendly and made us feel welcome from the beginning. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and we look forward to our next visit!
